Wierd topic but it made me remember something I'd not thought of in years. We had a wierd health nut family at our hall. Actually the whole hall was really into bizarre fringe homeopathy but that's another story in itself. This particular family was really into taking garlic capsules and the one son had been prescribed to take huge doses by their "doctor". The stench was unbelievable and permeated the entire hall. You could smell it for days after he'd left. It was truly incredible.
i read on one of the posts that elders visit disfellowshipped persons once a year?
is this an accurate statement?
while we were never disfellowshipped, we just faded away over 25 years ago.
The local elder did stop at my door once a year for the first couple years after I DAed. They finally stopped about 4 years ago after I'd been out for about 6 years.
he passed away last friday.
i never thought i'd ever enter a kingdom hall but we did it.
it wasn't a pleasant experience.

I'm sorry for your loss. Losing a parent is really hard. Sorry this time has been made more difficult for you by having to deal with the added turmoil of dealing with JW's in a time of grief. My Grandma just passed away last month & going to the hall again was not pleasant for me either.

human nature being what it is, everyone stops to see the accident.
of course, by the time we get there, we are so pissed at the traffic, we slow down ourselves to make sure we see what all the fuss was about.. compare that perhaps to seeing the biggest accident of them all, bethel.
I probably wouldn't make it 5 minutes without being escorted out either.
I went when I was a kid and it was a huge eye opener to me then and I swore to myself I would never work there. Creepy worker bee vibes! On the whole the Brooklyn tour is mindnumbingly boring. The farm was by far the wierdest and creepiest to me. It was like they were practicing for the new system or something, well I guess not like, they acually were practicing! There is a garbage dump for the farm where you can see masses of vultures circling which was the most memorable part for me. Someone, I think our tour guide, made a reference that he imagined the dump to look like the aftermath of armageddon and the birds eating the dead unbelievers and then everyone laughed like it was a joke!
I would not recommend the tour of Bethel as it is downright boring. The Farm is interesting just for the creepy factor.

we all know that they say a lot of stupid things, but what really topped the cake?.
for me, it was an elder telling me i was progressing really well when my meeting attendance was down and my field service hours were slipping.
Wannaexit- My mom got "counciled" all the time about her rusty car when we were kids and the elders used to say her car brought reproach on Jehovah's org. when it was parked in front of the KH! It had no muffler too and was quite loud too. She wanted to pioneer and they advised her against it until she could get a new car. At the time we were the second poorest family in our county, subsisting on government commodoties, food stamps, and wild game mostly fish. Our welfare check barely covered the cost of housing. The fact that we even had a car was because an elder in a neighboring hall sold her the car for $50 so she could get to the meetings. Talk about "shooting the pipes"! She eventually sold our house and moved into a cabin shack one of the counciling elders owned so she could buy a new car as they had advised.

Some of the all time stupidest things I ever heard were-
1- That E.T. was an inapropriate movie for "christians". The reason given was because Steven Spielberg was diliberately trying to undermine "christian" faith by showing E.T. being resurrected like Jesus but without God being the resurrector.
2- That if I yelled "Jehovah" while being attacked by criminals or demons the attacker would release me and God would save the day!
3- That men are better than women because women are the weaker vessel?!
4- The band Poison being posessed by satan definitely ranks in my mind too. The only thing those boys were posessed by was a horrible hairspray addiction and a disturbing lack of talent.
Wow! That is the sweetest most bitchin'est hair family of all time! The dude's my favorite. He looks like a roadie for RATT or Winger. Incredible!

are you a person that makes disparaging remarks about certain groups because they are different from you?
if you feel that you're not a prejudiced person, do you see yourself stereotyping?
I too come from a very diverse family, lots of different races and nationalities. I do stereo-type a bit. I come from an area where everyone is decended from various scandinavian countries and they fight about customs, which country's the best and swap deragatory jokes about each other. Finnish-Norwegians-and Swedes mostly. It's odd to me one of the lone non Scandinavians because they all kind of seem the same to me.
I do have a deep seated prejudice against people with mullet haircuts and "wife beater" muscle tee-shirts especially if they drive a rusted out el camino while blaring USA coutry radio at full volume. Also people who wear socks with sandals. I don't know if it's a true prejudice though, as I'm glad these people exist as they amuse me to no end.
