As my kids remind me, there's no one I won't talk to. I strike up conversations waiting in line at the grocery store. Though I haven't really made friends that way, I think the one thing that does help me is being non-judgmental. No one is perfect and there won't be many perfect matches for friends. But looking past some foibles helps. Not everyone has to be a best friend, either. I did join a Unitarian Church (bring your own beliefs) and that helped. Some have stuck as friends and others not. I guess I just try to be open and not overly expectant.

How Have You Gone About Making Friends Since Leaving the Witnesses ?
by flipper ini've noticed lately that some on our board, or perhaps for many of us, that's why i'm writing this , have had a challenge making new friends after leaving the jehovah's witnesses religion.
it has been a mixed bag for me.
i have met some through my wife, who is not a witness.

Years ago, when I was still "in," my best friends mom died after hip replacement surgery. She had a severe allergy to the cement used with the replacement hip and also lost a lot of blood. What I also heard was that they gave her too much fluid trying to keep fluid in her veins since she wouldn't take blood, and that was the supposed cause of death. The family sued and Borg attorneys came in from NY to represent them. I left within the next few months so I never heard what happened. This was in Michigan.

Residual Cognitive Effects of the Watchtower Partylines...? (Christmas)
by Mincan inso down by the falls they have the niagara festival of lights, in queen victoria park they have many thoughtful displays of "lightshows" as well as having all the trees decorated in lights.
oftentimes there is christmas music playing from the niagara park commisions's headquarters or other areas of the park.. how long did it take you before christmas didn't seem "weird" or subconsciously wrong.
like i always found christmas carols annoying, i wonder why this is now.

I had no trouble celebrating Christmas; I still love it and wish it lasted longer. This year the budget's a bit tighter but I'm still looking forward to putting up the tree and having friends and family over for meals or just visiting. I'm not a "believer" but embrace its earth based origins. I feel so much more in tune with nature and the earth's cycles now. Once I was shunned by my family for being inactive, I didn't have to worry about being caught. My son stopped trick-or-treating way to early as far as I'm concerned! I'm glad to live in a neighborhood with lots of children so get to hand out goodies.

Do you ever get nausea when encountering JW stuff
by Sirona ini thought after 7 years out i had done a pretty good job of getting my mind free of the jws.. then yesterday i went on youtube and typed in jehovah's witness.
after watching a few apostate videos, i came across a pro-jw video of a convention.
as i started the video and they started singing "we thank you jehovah" i got a mega wave of nausea and felt like i had to switch the thing off.. has this happened to you?

Yes, mingled with revulsion. I came home from work one evening last week and saw the latest rags on the couch. My son had accepted them; he said when he was talking to them he thought they were Christian so accepted their offer. I was angry at first but he doesn't remember ever going to a meeting so isn't as aware. I told him they'd be back for him! perhaps I should put up a no jw's sign.

My Mum's gone
by shell69 ina few months ago i noticed that my mum had put her house up for sale, she doesn't live far from me and i had occasion to drive past her house.. well i've had a funny unsettled feeling all week, and i drove along the back of her house yesterday, and all the curtains were gone, she'd obviously left.
feeling brave i drove round the front, and yes its empty, doesnt look like she's been gone long.
i got out and went in the back garden, and looked through the windows.

What a cruel thing. I hope she knew that and that it went against her motherly insticts. When my mom sold the family home, she phoned me less than 24 hours ahead of the move to see if I wanted to have coffee the next morning. I was struggling with two jobs, two kids, and could not drop everything to go see her. I can't bring myself to go by the house. I hope you got some kind of closure in stopping by your old home.
