Newbie question about the NGO story
by gcc2k ini've seen the reproductions of evidence in the ngo story.. let's say i was to discuss this matter with a local friendly elder.
i imagine that the following criticisms would ensue:.
1) that is not a real letter sent by the society (saying it was just for a library card, or as the version from portugal said, to gain favor in certain nations).. 2) the reply from the librarian at the un saying that becoming an ngo is not a requirement for a library pass is not real.. my main concern is with the latter.

Unlike the WTS, few if any religions make claims about the UN that the WTS makes, so if they decide to become NGOs, it's not a big deal.

should shunning be reversed?
by kls init is so sad when i read threads of persons finding their in a cult, and want out .problem ,their family will shun them and ignore there own children and close family members.what if things were reversed?
what if the person leaving this cult shunned their loved ones, letting them know they are being brainwashed and you don't want their sick beliefs being pushed on them all over again.
i do believe cult members enjoy shunning , it makes them feel superior and they feel they are taking a strong stand just like the gb says to do .give them a taste of what they dish out ,shun the jw, if they won't convert to using their own mind, shun them with out guilt .

I'm not the sort to be able to shun someone, though preemptive shunning sounds kind of like a good idea if one feels a need to perhaps protect themselves from the hurt that being shunned brings. But I just don't think I could do it. Now my wife, on the other hand, would probably be able to. She can let people know in no uncertain terms when she's ticked at them. After my removal, she wouldn't even talk to or look at the elders for months.

An elder left a paper at my door
by JH insince the last 6 weeks, the elders are trying to get a hold of me, but i specialize in being invisible.
so now they left a little paper at my door asking that i call elder x so that he can talk to me.
do you think i should keep on avoiding them since they are about to end their 3 month call on inactive ones?

I agree, you're under no obligation to call.

Major WTS Prophecy goes down to defeat !!!
by Amazing inmany here may recall that the watchtower society has published much material on the prophetic role of the united nations ... specifically, the united nations is the scarlet colored wild beast, the "image" of the worldly 7 headed wild political beast ... it would be given life by the two-horned dual world power of britain and america, the "lamb-like beast spoken of in revelation ... this "image" beast would be given power to rule one prophetic hour over the nations as they subordinate their national sovereignty to it ... and so on ...
then ... after the creation of the united nations in 1945 in san francisco the wts interpreted revelation regarding the demise of the old league of nations to apply to a statement in revelation that this "image" beast would be revived in the form of the united nations ... seemingly, the wts was on to something ... and for the next 45 years (until about 1990) the watchtower published anything and everything they could to make their interpretation stick with respect to how deep in the time of the end they believed we were living in ... then, about 1990, the watchtower society joined the un as a member ngo ... a significant departure from their previous stand on political neutrality ... and ... hatred of satan's old system of things ... certainly, since we are nearly 90 years into the last days of this wicked system we would expect the un to be in control or at least taking the lead ...
so, now ... where do we stand as of march 19th, 2003?

Here's my problem with Hurt's post:
If the UN would have acted, and the US and Britain would have waited for a second resolution authorizing force, jws would be saying 'look - the nations give their power to the Scarlet-Colored Beast and they submit to it, so the FDS is correct!' But instead, the US and Britain moved ahead without the UN, and they still think the FDS is correct. Always trying to have things both ways.

Judicial Committee Meetings
by Pathofthorns ini saw this interesting post on h20.
most publishers are unaware how things really work many times in the back room of a kingdom hall.
sure there are lenient elders, many do try to show mercy.

When I was an elder, I sat on several committees, some that dealt with sexual matters. One time, on a committee I did not serve on, one elder was so out-of-line that he was removed from the committee, and then 'reinstated' to it by the Society. This elder caused much hardship and stress to the young woman who was being questioned and her family.
Also, while Frenchy's post was very informative, isn't it a shame that the best place to find out your rights in such situations is at a Internet message board. You won't see the elders or the Society publicly state such. If anything, they are in KS91 book, but that's for elder's eyes only.
Waiting, what you went through was obviously very wrong and traumatic. I am very sorry that you had to endure that nonsense.

I Was Told To "Read Between The Lines"
by minimus inyesterday, my wife and i got together with my brother and his wife for dinner.
they began talking about how they never thought they'd still be here in this system of things.they complained that the elders were often jerks and unfair.
they talked about how they hoped their disfellowshipped daughter would soon get reinstated.

I think Room215 has it right. There are things that do not appear clear-cut in print but are nevertheless "enforced" to a great degree by the removal of privilages, etc. Conversely, most jws feel a need to 'soften' the words that appear in print. They 'rationalize' things like the example just given - "do more" becomes "do more - if you can". I always was rather perplexed by that tendency. Indeed, feeling the need to read between the lines just shows how unreasonable the printed edicts, suggestions, or whatever one might call them, really are.

Maybe the WTS got some ideas from the Methodists?
by onacruse in) the book of discipline of the united methodist church (1996)(pp.
while primary responsibility and initiative rests with each professing member faithfully to perform the vows of the baptismal covenant that have been solemnly assumed, if the professed member should be neglectful of that responsibility, these procedures shall be followed:.
(1) if a professed member residing in the community is negligent of the vows or is regularly absent from the worship of the church without valid reason, the pastor and the membership secretary shall report that professed member's name to the church council, which shall do all in its power to reenlist the professed member in the active fellowship of the church.

Good post, and very interesting similarities. As met and RT do point out, I am not sure how serious the Methodists really get about it, but nonetheless, the possiblity that the WTS borrows from their policy is intriguing.
