How often did you comment at meetings?

i have a theory and i'd like to put it to the test here.. i would be willing to bet that the posters who post a great deal probably commented more than the average publisher at the meetings.. i know it's true in my case.. on simon's forum we have the whole range of 'publishers-' from those that comment a lot ---down to those that are just there.

This thread actually reminds me of a gag one brother played.

Actually a pretty cool guy outside the org, but anyway, he was substituting as the Watchtower conductor for the brother who usually did it (he was giving an away talk).

Anyway, after we finish the review questions, he has everyone turn to paragraph one of the next study (same mag). Reads the question. Says "Here is the answer". And gives everyone the answer (it was one of those basic 'Jesus' or 'Jehovah' answers).

Anyway, he tells EVERYONE to raise their hands question #1 next week, since we now had the answer. Him and the other brother were friends and joked around a lot, so we played along.

OMG, you have never SEEN such a shocked expression when the other brother asked the question the following week and 200 hands came up. (Typically, 4-5 would be up a question). I swear to the Lord and Lady, the guy looked like he was going to have a heart attack ON THE SPOT.

Asking Questions At Meetings!

reading the other thread about answering at meetings gave me the cold shivers.

there is a fundamental part of being a witness that i've never understood, that just seems so at odds with the philosophy outlined by jesus and the apostles in the new testament - why weren't we allowed to ask questions at the meetings?

I got a kid from school to go to a bookstudy once. Just before it, I explained the 'ground rules': don't ask questions, just sit there and listen. The conductor will ask questions based on a paragraph just read, and you paraphrase the answers out of the book.

Couldn't understand at the time why he didn't want to go back.

I mean, if you were to intentionally design a brainwashing institution, you couldn't make it creapier than that seems now.

The UADNA is not for play. Those who wish to become affiliated with the UADNA will be contacted after their loyalty has been proven.

Well, can you at least add a snazzy slogan to the end of it? I don't think I would want to belong to an organization without a snazzy slogan.

Even something simple like "Remember 1975" or something.

3. Mischeivous mood.

Sounds like something a 'feisty' elder would cook up as a game for kids. Keeps the presentations from being repetitive and boring by adding random words (psst..."polyhedron").

I think moods did play a big role, but I'd catagorize mine as:

1) Bored rebellious. No comment, obligatory last-paragraph comment, or question box. ('obligatory' literally - one of our elders was so proud of how often his kids would answer, he'd mention it in every part. So mom made a rule that my brother and I had to be almost as good. IIRC., answering twice a meeting - raising hand 3 times without being called on counted as 1 'answer'....that takes a lot of courage for a shy kid in a hall of nearly 200)

2) Trying to impress a sister. This is where I answered frequently and with well-researched material. One wonders why no one pieced together that I only gave 'spiritual' comments when cute sisters were in my bookstudy.

no need to grab your water bottles and run for the mountains tho, as it's only coming in about 850 years.

that should give you plenty of time to stock up on beer!.

Right, that's a problem, too.

IF you could blow it up, lots of small fragments would be just as bad.

However, Earth's total nuclear arsenal at the peak of the cold war would not have been able to destroy even a moderately-sized asteroid. Hard to believe, I know, but I bothered to look it up and verify it when I first read it. Do a search on google and you'll find some good papers on the topic.

) i have an addictive personality so i have tried to be real careful that i'm doing the right thing by getting involved with them.

Well, given our current level of technology, that would be a species-killer.

Movies like 'Armegeddon' and 'Deep Impact' aside, nukes won't help a bit against an asteroid. Really - their biggest effects are the fireball and shockwaves generated by their interaction with an atmosphere. No atmosphere in space! The actual vaporization a nuke does is very, very little.

Best bet to survive an asteroid is to find it a LONG way ahead of time (say, 850 years), then send some ships out to mount giant rockets to the side of it and changes its course. Over a few million mile elliptical path, you only have to change its course by a half degree or so to make it completely miss Earth.

So, yeah, it's a problem. And, we'd better have a small fleet of ships heading towards that rock within a hundred years or so if we want to survive it.

If it had only been found 50 years out, we'd have no chance whatsoever to survive it (space travel takes a LONG time, and we'd have to develop the technology to beat it in the first place)
