  I left JW's quite on my own. After leaving, I still had doubts about their teachings and whether or not I was going to fry at Armageddon. Reading the works of Ray Franz, AlanF, Farkel, Norm, and Randy Watters, I came to grips with my own beliefs. I am in their debt for helping to free the chains of my former self, but I am certainly NOT a cult member.

  This argument about Farkel's perceived insults is equally absurd. If your self-worth is so tied up in another's opinion of you, you need help. If you have confidence in who and what you are, the term "dipfuck" or "bloodsucker" should not matter one bit.

  And for the record, MOST of you who are the most vocal complainers, have exhibited reprehensible behavior...if not here, then elsewhere.

  Thank you, Alan, for your reasonable response. I worship admire you.

  Why we can't afford tax cuts

  republicans and democrats have distracted us with unending battles between haves and have-nots for decades.

  over the same period, they have bankrupted the country.

  perhaps that terror, not currency traders or al-qaeda, may explain the odd market decline after a tax cut that was supposed to make stocks soar.

  The WTS, Downsizing and Contributions.

  as most of you may have gathered, the past couple of years have seen some major downsizing in wts expenditure, not just overseas but in the us and canada, including the sale of some buildings.

  building projects have been shelved, some half-way completed.

  every congregation around the world was instructed to upgrade kindgom halls, probably for the purposes of asset protection, as the trustees of khs are only trustees *for* the wts.

  Look, I'm just a mid-management accountant here, but even I know there is a difference between owning fixed assets and having cash-flow. In order to recognize any benefit from their vast property holdings, they would have to liquidate them - a situation fraught with morale consequences at the very least. Selling God's property to raise funds? Unthinkable!

  And Metatron is correct: the Brooklyn property and equipment may not be marketable - at least not for what it should be worth.

  And on the subject of contributions, it has certainly been the case that JW's in developed nations were in a far better situation to be generous to the Society. Those very individuals who could afford to put in $200 at a time into the coffers - the well-educated, well-employed JW's - are the very ones dropping out in vast numbers. If the population base shifts to where the religion is still in growth mode, many of those people live in poverty and cannot put more than a "widow's mite" into the contribution boxes. Generous though they may be, how much can the Society hope to receive from areas like rural Africa, Mexico, or the former Soviet States?

  If this trend continues, cheap lightbulbs won't begin to stop the leak. Candles, perhaps?

  i imagine that there must be quite a few bethelites that have been there for many years, and because of the internet or their own experience while working at bethel, that causes them to know that this is not the "truth".

  but because they have gotten old and have no place else to go, and so make beleive they are still with the program.

  can you imagine how tuff that must be, what kind of pressure that put on some poor soul lke that.

  Perhaps it is a valid topic for discussion, Larc. But the subject line is written as a statement, not a hypothetical. It is inflammatory and misleading.

  Would it not have been more prudent to write: "What if....?" before the sentence?

  This in no way compares to sexual innuendo.

  Excellent article.

  The problem I have with the current administration is this: short-sightedness. They (that is Bush and those who advise him) want only what nets instant gratification and popularity.

  Economy, environment, foreign relations - all tuned to short-term goals without thought to long-term consequences.
