other side of the coin
by spider inperhaps i will be attacked for this thread, i am not sure.i am as shocked as can be by the terrorist atrosity perpetrated today.i have watched all afternoon and evening and still can't quite take it in.. i have heard the people involved described as evil cowards in the west.i accept this statement and as i have aleady stated deplore the action but i feel that the media only shows one side of the coin.. the pilots that commited suicide were certainly not cowards.they believed in their cause enough to give their lives for it.these, along with the many that orchestrated this event put a lot of time, money and sacrifice in to this.. this is the part of the story i am unclear about.this is the part which is not being explained - at least not to my feeble understanding.. why do so many of the middle eastern countries hate the west as much as they do.sure iraq has good reason but what about the others.. there are two sides to every story and as much as i hate what has happened i wonder what theirs is.why do they dance on the streets now?
america has bombed countries.in serbia to get rid of milosivich.they must have hated america then but this was out of a lack of information.. i do not believe evil exists - evil acts but not evil as an entity.it is all too easy when asked why atrosity is performed to simply answer - the person was evil.there has got to be more to it than that.
what brought about these murderous acts.was it the kind of mind control that was perpetrated on us as witnesses.after all, the witnesses would take delight in the coming armageddon when billons of people will die.. is this evidence of a similar condition?.

Double Standards - Where is the line drawn?
by msil ini was happy when the yadrif was given the boot - we never needed the spread of hatred and name calling.
it seemed as though everyone felt the same way.. i find it hypocritical that as long as you are "influential in the xjw community" or if you run a big anti-jw website you can call anyone names and you can post any obscene drivel as long as it is a song which you dedicate other posters.. i find it ironic that a "well-respected" poster (and i could give a damn what his past actions or brave deeds are, or what fancy essays he wrote) would call me a biggot in chat for asking simple questions but then he would defend the stuff kent wrote in reference to aguest.
i don't give a damn if it was written by frank zappa or some other crack-smokin' loser - the fact that they are song lyrics is irrelevant.

relationships and relatives
by butalbee infor the last 7 months i have been involved in a "friendship" with a jw.
he really was my best friend, who i felt i could confide in and trust with my life.
i have to admit that i have never felt as close to another person before in my life, it was as though we were on the same level--he would finish my sentences, know what i was thinking, and feeling.

Going on the OFFENSIVE with relatives....
by LDH inwell, i just replied to reagan in another thread, and wanted to share my latest thoughts on family.

mind control
by spider ini just watched a louis theroux show.he was investigating charismatic figures who charge big bucks to help people "believe".i understand that it is good to have confidence in oneself - to be positive.saying "i can do this" to yourself like a hypnotic mantra and this will increase your chances.. they take it a stage further though.this guy was running a seminar for people who wanted to be millionares.of course it cost a lot of money to get into it.. having been a witness the techniques he used creeped me out.we have all experienced a particularly good salesman that has somehow made us buy something we didn't need but he was something else.he had a power over people.the way he spoke, the direct eye contact - he had obviously honed his craft of manipulating and controlling.he put others under a spell.he said people should put away their scepticism that was holding them back and just believe in him and what he was telling them.a sceptical attitude was a bad thing.they should have faith.alarm bells were ringing for me.. there was a new language that was developed.the language of positivity.people would say "no challenge" instead of "no problem".they did not say how they felt, they said how they wanted to feel.if their leg got broke the'd say "i feel great".this seemed to me reminiscent of the programming that we had as witnesses where what we thought and what we felt were disconnected.surely lying to yourself can't be a healthy thing.. what struck me most was how, with study and practice how easy it is to exert power and control over others.. evangelical religions use exactly these same techniques.without the religious context the same effects were being manifest.there was no mention of jesus but these guys were being controlled in that same kind of way - played like an instrument to the tune of one man.it was very cultic.at the end everyone was queing up to hand over five thousand dollars for the next seminar.
what is this power?
why does it weave such magic?

most HATED thing about the meetings ...
by alliwannadoislive inhey ya'll ... ain't tuesdays, thursdays and sundays even better nowadays ?.
i was wondering what it is that you hated most about the meets ?.
the one thing that used to really rile me was the pressure to control the children - the frowns and the disapproving looks when they were just behaving like normal kids .... the worst of it all for me was seeing any little person being taken outside and hearing the loud slaps even when the door was closed .... what is it that you least miss ?

in the beginning...
by spider ini just started reading the first few postings on this forum on pages 278 and 277.it was interesting to see how it all began.. the first messages were very guarded.noone knew what was to be deemed acceptable discussion.simon mentioned barring some apostate subjects.. it appeared at face value that all were current witnesses but i don't think this was true.. what was the real intent of this board at the beginning?
was it as innocent as simply allowing witnesses to discuss doctrine etc or was it to help witnesses see that their religion was false.. were there hidden agendas at first?
how many that claimed to be a witness was really just trying to gain the trust of others so as to help them think.to all that did and still do i have much respect and admiration for you all.. the board has evolved.when i read those first messages i was shocked by how polite and sensitive everyones comments were.this is not the case so much now.all the same there is freedom of thought and expression and this remains a very healthy thing.
