becoming a jehovah's witness
by pcecilia inhello all who may read this, i am in the midst of writing a story, and a character who has appeared in the story is a jehovah's witness... i am attempting to gain a better understanding of the religion and its practitioners so as to present witnesses in a fair light... i am of no religious affiliation, but i assume that anything that a person believes is valid as long as they have put it through much consideration and thoughtfulness...
) of you are ex-witnesses, but i would like to know about what first attracted you to the religion to begin with... was it just passed down in your family, or did you make a conscious choice to become a witness?
if so, for what reasons?

It has been said by several of my neurotic friends here on this board (whom I miss) that I could cut through the shit and get to the point better than most on this forum. I don’t think I could have commented on this issue, or said it any better, or with such style, as James Woods did here.
The title of the thread was perfect. Your comment about the two extremely insecure apologists was perfect. Your conclusions were (as my European friends say) “spot on”. I haven’t posted in a long time because…well just because, but I couldn’t let this one go by without saying something.
I don’t know why you guys keep stirring staunch apologist gooie grey matter with a virtual teaspoon like so much lukewarm Cream of Wheat. The dyed in the wool ones will never admit any recognition of logic, reasoning, or intellectual defeat because they are simply too heavily programmed not to do so. The two here are two of the most Pavlovian response space Cadets to ever come here and try to battle their own extreme levels of insecurity by posting and never acknowledging anything but their own babblings.
They have to disagree and try and make their point because their lives depend on it. Not just in the watchtower dogma sense of it but in their own programmed sense of reality. If the watchtower is wrong then they have to deal with and eventually accept their own mortality. They will have to someday sit down and contemplate their own death. If they keep fighting for the BS the watchtower spews and hold strong to that delusion of never dieing and living forever, then their own psyche can go back to sleep along with their sense of right and wrong, up and down, black and white, and mythical sea creatures.
If they think they are here to have lurkers read their posts and stay in the organization because of something they said then they have crossed over from plain stupidity to extreme psychosis.
Anyway, I couldn’t let this thread pass by with out saying Good Job James. Your cynical style is highly appreciated by this old, one time smart ass, poster.

Reading "The Power of Myth"
by wanderlustguy init was like i had so many doors already cracked open, so to speak, but this book has thrown them right off the hinges.
i would recommend it to anyone.
it also helped me to understand james thomas' posts a lot better.

I’m glad you finally got around to reading it. Read a few more like it and then start reading about the history of the world’s religions and empires. Start with reading about the traveling merchants along the Silk Highway and how the myths of the gods were created and intermixed around the camp fires. And then spread around Europe, Africa, Asia and The middle East. It will all make perfect sense.
Then read about human psychology, group dynamics, and the human need to feel a part of a group, that leads them back to their tribal roots. If you can slip in reading about how ancient people interpreted natural disasters and astronomy it will also add to the big picture.
When you put it all together you will see that people have not changed from the beginning of time ‘till now. Neither have their stories or their need to believe in them.
When you get it, it will be a bit sobering but then you can sit back, enjoy life and learn to laugh at it, as well as yourself.

I also have to agree with you when it comes to Richie “stealing” that book. I know when I was a cop and we went about gathering evidence in a crime I had a hard time taking things that didn’t belong to me. We even had a cop credo that said, “if your name is not on that bag of drugs or AK47 automatic weapon, or you did not buy it yourself or ask the drug dealer permissions to take them, then just leave them be, they are not yours to take.
I guess it’s all in ones perspective to whether it’s stealing or gathering evidence.
Richie should have asked the elders if they minded him taking the book. I’m sure they would have said it was fine. After all, just like the drug dealers, the elders don’t have anything to hide. Do they?

A pissed off 17 year old kid takes a book with incriminating evidence that the watchtower’s corporate leaders deny they had ever said and proves them to be the liars that they are. Many have suffered because of their lies and cover-ups and have lost their youth and their families. Some here say he is a bad boy for stealing and insinuates he is a common thief.
Pissed off adult employees present evidence that they “stole” that shows corporate leaders of Enron lied to the government, their investors, and employees. It proved them to be deceitful liars and their trying to cover that up. Many lost their entire retirement investment because of the dishonest deceptions. No one (except for the defendants lawyers) called those who took the evidence and exposed the lies and deceptions, a common thief.
Give me a fricken break people!
If it will make you all feel better I will volunteer to give bad boy Richie a good beating for being a common thief. I’ll just need a little help with some of you holding him down for me. Any volunteers?

The watchtower is telling the elders to destroy evidence of a child molester so they can fill their elder ranks. I think that is one hell of a lot more serious crime then taking a book. Show me a law that says you cannot take a book out of a church that may encourage the crime of child molestation. It’s not the damn ark of the covenant for Christ sakes. -

Personally I wouldn’t give them the satisfaction of letting them think they still have some kind of power or authority over you. Don’t let them scare you with any kind of legal threat. You are a minor so they cant do shit. Don’t let them scare you with any copy write infringement bullshit either. If they do, tell them you will take the whole issue to the media and explain you just wanted to expose the behind clothes door policies of telling their elders to destroy records of pedophiles so they can again serve with some kind of authority in the Christian congregation of Jehovah witnesses.
I’m sure Kimberly at Love and Norris law firm would love to get that book. It will blow the bullshit the elders have been acting oblivious too at some of her trials right out of the water. I would love to see a judge subpoena some of the elders books with their hand written notes in the margins in a trial and then arrest a bunch of elders for either withholding evidence or tampering with evidence when they destroy them.
The watchtower is scared to death of having their little secrets exposed in the media or having a judge force them to admit a lie or a cover up. Attorneys love that shit and it really pisses judges off. Admit you took the book but then explain why. The notes in the margins show how the watchtower is extremely deceitful and allows them to say shit like they never printed those instructions or condone them.
