I'm not deaf, but I was in an ASL congregation for about five years before I left the witnesses.

Help with my novel I'm writing
by pimonotforlong ini don't know if i'm submitting this under the proper subject area, but i had a question i was wondering if anyone had any expertise on.. i'm writing a ya novel inspired by my experiences growing up and being a teenager as a jehovah's witness.
it is a fictional story though.
however, my critiquing beta readers are torn between whether i should make it the actual jw religion in the book, or if i should make a fictional religion based on the jws.

You’re welcome. My only other recommendation is that, if you don’t want your family to find out about it, definitely publish under a pseudonym. Otherwise I can guarantee someone will find the book and connect it to you eventually.

I’ve written a novella about JW youth, which was professionally published. I’ve faced no legal trouble whatsoever, and I’m a writer with a decent-size audience. I also did a book tour and readings of the book when it came out. The only backlash I received was from my family: they were already shunning me to some degree, but when the book came out, they started shunning me completely, despite the book actually being a fairly empathetic portrayal.

5 Reasons Why the DEAF Masturbation Video is different than anything before...
by BluePill2 inas some of you have noticed the asl video warning against masturbation (another guilt trip) is creating waves.
this is not small fry.
1. it is humorous - most topics (like other policies) are serious/depressing (blood, shunning, pedos).

So why didn't the American deaf community ever come up with signs that are not as vulgar, much in the same way all other languages engage in euphemism when discussing difficult topics?
It's just the nature of the language and the culture. Deaf culture tends be very blunt and very detailed. The culture has evolved that way, whereas most hearing cultures have evolved to be more sensitive to certain topics, and some hearing cultures are far more sensitive to said topics than those of English-speaking cultures.
As an aside, I think it's a shame that, even here, we refer to topics like sexuality and masturbation as difficult or vulgar or potentially offensive. A thing--a word, a gesture, a topic, a discussion, etc.--is only offensive if it offends us, and as obvious as that might sound, we really can choose, if we want, to not be offended by things.

I had a hard time sitting through this article at the meeting this past weekend. I recently finshed reading the novel Freedom by Jonathan Franzen, and Franzen explores the concept and meaning of real freedom far better and more accurately than the Watchtower did.

My review of the new JW.org website, and why Watchtower videos are landing them in a sticky situation!
by cedars ini know some of the fuss about the newly revamped jw.org has died down, but i wanted to write a blog article by way of a "review" all the same.
i felt it was important to highlight the dishonesty and evasiveness of the information on the new website, particularly in the "faqs" section.
hopefully, if people decide to research "jw.org" on google, eventually my article might rise to the top and give people a more balanced perspective.. here is the link.... http://jwsurvey.org/cedars-blog/the-new-jw-org-watchtowers-attempt-to-tame-the-internet.

I just want to point out that the Society has actually had their sign language videos available on the internet for years. It's not a new strategy.
