Jehovah's Witnesses were the only religious community that united and consistently opposed Nazism out of their faith. The Bible Christians numbered about 25,000 souls in Germany at that time. Because they refused the Hitler salute and the oath to the "Führer", military service and any activity in armaments production, the Jehovah's Witnesses, who originally called themselves "Serious Bible Researchers", were banned and persecuted by the Nazi regime, from 1933 in the German Reich , later also in the areas under German rule or German influence.
