That time of the year once more, Xmas gifts. Help

since the family members are getting older these days there are.

Why don't you all, as a group, decide on a charity to support and then make anonymous cards to put in a gift box which you all open together on Christmas day, and tally up the amount your group donated to this worthy cause and celebrate your accomplishment together over your dinnner?

You could play a game called "Dirty Santa" for Christmas gifts. Everyone buys a token or gag gift for about $10-$15, wraps it up and brings it to the gift exchange party. Gifts get placed under the tree and depending on the number of guests (say there's 20), you'd have slips of paper in a hat, numbered 1 to 20. The person who draws first picks a gift and unwraps it. The next person in line has the option to choose a gift or steal from one of the gifts that's been revealed, etc. until all the gifts are open. Whoever has their gifts "stolen" gets to pick again either from the unwrapped gifts or the wrapped pile, but they aren't allowed to steal their original gift back.

Trying to overcome my homophobia.

i had a music album by a gay guy before i was a jw and had no problem listening to it.

it's good music.

some of the lyrics are what you might call 'gay', that is there's some talk about boyfriends, gay bars, and queens and the intolerance the artist encountered as a gay man.

Mr Scully and I were talking about this sort of thing the other day. I was complaining that they didn't seem to have a problem showing lesbian relationships on shows like Grey's Anatomy, but I was wondering out loud why they weren't featuring male main characters in gay relationships. I said if they really wanted to make the point that they supported LGBT rights they had to do this.

It's one thing to make dramedy (drama/comedy) shows featuring gay relationships in the lead roles (like Desperate Housewives did), but it needs to happen on a serious show, with main characters, and needs to explore issues that pertain to these families - like adoption, surrogate parenting, marriage, divorce, etc.

What would you do?

i went to my 1st apointment with my surgeon today.

my scheduled apointment was at 10:30am.

my primary care doctor made the apointment over a week ago.

It's deplorable to be made to wait for an appointment.

I recently went to a specialist - my appointment was made in June and I was to be seen at 3:20 pm on a Friday in September; I wasn't seen until almost 6 pm. By the time I was finished with the doctor, the support staff had already left for the day. The doc was supposed to schedule me for a chest x-ray and abdominal ultrasound, and she told me the radiology department would contact me on Monday with my appointment times for the x-ray and ultrasound.

By the following Thursday, I hadn't been contacted with appointment times, so I called the hospital myself and tried to figure out when I was supposed to show up. Turned out there were no requisitions posted in the computer by the doctor. So I had to call the office and leave a message with her nurse and let her know the situation. It took her almost 2 weeks to get back to me, and assure me that the tests had now been ordered and I should be hearing from them within the week to book the appointments. That was 3 weeks ago. So I have to get back on the phone tomorrow and find out what happened with the requisitions again, and see if I can find out when I'm supposed to go for these tests.

Do you want to know what absolutely kills me about this? This institution is where I work. This kind of bungling is a professional embarrassment. Nobody should have to wait three hours to be seen by a physician when they've waited months for their appointment already. You do all the right things - you confirm your appointment, clear your calendar so you can actually go to the appointment, and then they can't even see you at the time you're scheduled. If I showed up 3 hours late to an appointment, they would charge me $75 for being late... because THEIR time is valuable. But can I charge them $75 for the 3 hours I waited or for the 3 hours' worth of parking I had to pay? (yup! I have to pay to park at my place of employment!) or for the wild goose chase I've been on trying to get my follow up done before my next appointment in February? Not on your frikkin' life.

I think I may need to write to the CEO to voice my frustrations. Not that it will do any good; hell, maybe I'll end up having to look for a new job.

As far as your situtation - there's no excuse for being made to wait 90 minutes for a 10:30 am appointment, whether they are "squeezing you in" or not. That's just nuts. Hopefully the next experience will go more smoothly - and I hope you have a receipt for the payment you made today that you're applying to the next appointment.

If we did have a specific FAQ section, with forum navigation and post formatting tips, it might be great to have that in a highly visible place, such as just below the username - PM box - logout area at the top of the page. This would make it accessible to visitors as well as signed-in members. A Terms of Service link would be helpful too, similarly placed.

Do you make your own soup?

greetings, soup lovers:.

i have a huge kitchen at my disposal (not my own); vegetables, cans of this and that and spices are scattered about, prepared to go into a cauldron of minestrone i started a few days ago.

i'm preparing ahead so as to freeze the leftovers to heat up later at home over my hotplate.. nothing like a 6-burner gas range to simmer over!.

I made an absolutely gorgeous spicy Thai chicken soup last weekend. It was relatively simple to make, and so beautifully fragrant. Even Mr Scully, who is somewhat of a fussy eater, enjoyed it and said I should make it again.

is there anybody harder to deal with than hardcore and old-fashioned persons confirmed in their own ways?.

even though these people know times, customs and laws have passed them by and younger folk don't think and act the old ways --they hold the old views, prejudices and disproved stereotypes as absolutely correct anyway!.

think about how stubborn people can be and how impossible it is to get along with them--especially if you cross them, offend them or incite them unnecessarily!.

I thought a Nazarite had to grow hair and NEVER allow it to be cut. Not sure what you are talking about. (Numbers 6)

There were some Nazirites who were lifelong Nazirites, and they never allowed their hair to be cut or their head to be shaved (like Samson for instance). But they could also take a vow for temporary service (a bargaining chip of sorts), hopeful for a good outcome in war or the birth of a healthy child, after which they could cut their hair. (Kind of like a playoff beard, I guess...)

However, if a Nazirite broke his vow, he would be required to shave his head as a sign of his humiliation, and this was the example used by Reza Aslan regarding Paul - he went to the Gentiles to preach the Jesus story and in the process diluted the pure message by sharing it with unworthy Greeks and Romans, whose aim was to rule over the Jews in Jewish territory.

I just finished listening to Zealot, by Reza Aslan. He comments on this passage as well.

His take on Paul's ministry was that James, who was Jesus' brother, had a huge problem with Paul for taking Jesus' teachings to the Gentiles. James was the head of the Jesus Movement in Jerusalem, and as the brother of Jesus, was in a far better position than Paul to know what Jesus' thoughts on matters would have been. Bottom line, though, was that Jesus was a Jew, and his message was intended for the 'lost sheep of the house of Israel', not the Gentiles. James considered Paul to be an APOSTATE, and subjected him to the humiliation of shaving his head in a Nazirite ritual in the temple (Acts 21:20-25).

As a matter of fact, he claims that 2 John is also referring to Paul, when describing the antichrist, because Paul was preaching a message that appealed to Hellenistic sensibilities over the Jews, who were the actual intended recipients of Jesus' gospel.

7 many deceivers have gone forth into the world, persons not confessing Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.

So here, John was actually instructing Christians of Jewish origin to shun Paul and anyone following him, considering Pauline Christians to be "deceivers" and of the "antichrist".

All I could think when I heard this was "WWWWOOOOOOOoooowwww"
