Another generation....

it has been 21 years since the 1995 article that pretty much buried the idea of the '1914 generation'.. remember those guys?

the ones born in 1914 that would still be alive when the end of the system arrived.. i'm glad i'm old enough to remember going from door to door, preaching this belief.

the reason i say that is because i have a lot of 'still in' jw friends and family.

Witnesses would simply discard that quote as something that has been replaced by the light getting progressively brighter. They would say they were not wrong. They would say that is how Holy Spirit led the GB to interpret the scriptures then. They would say they it is now clear there is an overlapping generation, that it can only be a single overlap and that the end is imminent.

They might claim that if the overlapping generation had been clear earlier then it would have meant the growth of the organisation would have been different so Jehovah allowed the older understanding to be presented. They will repeat they were not wrong and that what is now taught is not materially different and that context and time means both explanations were/are correct and not contradictory.

They will be less ready with an answer when asked to explain why the older explanation could be explained from the Bible using scripture (albeit their interpretation) yet the new explanation cannot be explained with a single scripture? Why is it that the progressive revealing of meaning has resulted in something with less scriptural basis?

Imagine being gay or not conforming to the norms inside some communities inside the UK or other Western countries.

FGM still continues inside the UK.

Forced marriage still continues inside the UK.

Fear of witchcraft and superstition still motivates the abuse and worse of children in the UK.

The Witnesses are not the only group in the UK that shun those who are deemed to have transgressed, some to even more extreme levels than most Witnesses.

Who's saying Prince was doing anything wrong as a Witness? His past behaviour has no bearing on the matter.

He was clearly not run of the mill but there is no evidence to suggest that the local congregation was wilfully ignoring behaviour that would get anyone else up in front of a JC. He was never going to be given privileges in the congregation but that does not mean the congregation is hypocritical in having a memorial service.

He seemingly attended enough meetings and shared his faith enough to be considered "in good standing". For goodness sake, I have not gone on the ministry in months, never answer, attend only 50% of the time, never fulfil any assignments let alone give any money - but I am still in good standing. I would be allowed a KH funeral if I died now.

It's very rare to have an invite only event but given the profile of the man I am not surprised, not least to stop the JW sycophants from flocking to the thing.

2014 no.4 was the final straw.

there it states that jehovah's witnesses show no prejudice towards homosexuals, and "they neither mock nor mistreat people whose practices differ from their own.

Availability Crisis of Conscience.

most of us are desperately waiting for the availability of a legal crisis of conscience.

deborah dykstra provided us with two updates.

on december 12, 2015 there was a clear statement about the copyright which stopped all illegal activity in spreading electronic versions & prints.. finally, she promised a new update by or before may 6.. so far no new update.

As far as short run hard copy printing is concerned, rightly or wrongly, Cedars showed how cheaply and quickly this could be achieved.

Before anyone flames me down I support the distribution of the book in a structured way by parties with the rights to do so, The above are just a couple of points to indicate how quickly something could be done. Perhaps a little simplistic as I know the copyright owner wants to cover a number of bases both with print and electronic media and has had a lot of things to consider with copyright, ill health and so on, but there was a tremendous amount of goodwill here and elsewhere to supporting the copyright holder's aims and this is being eroded by lack of visible progress.

In the meantime distribution of the book as a shared PDF is no doubt continuing unabated.

Stories like Moses not getting into the Promised Land for his one mistake, the fellow getting fried for trying to stop the Ark of the Covenant falling off the cart and bears eating groups of kids simply for being silly kids are used to justify draconian punishments when elders jump to knee jerk reactions when a little time, reasonableness and mercy would bring a far better long term situation.

epica- ice cores

epica- european project for ice coring in antarctica.. kind of old news but fascinating.

over the last 10 years or so, this organisation has analysed ice core samples taken from antarctica.

drilling more than 3000 metres into the permafrost, they produced the longest, continuous record of earths climate extending back almost 800 000 years.
