The question is not if the quote is wrong but what impression the casual reader would be left with. Most readers with a bias towards creation would imply that the quote is saying that many scientists question evolution and are prepared to accept some form of intelligent design. Anyone reading the conext of the original material can see this is not the case.

The way the quote is presented and it's lack of context has been done so deliberately by the society to create the impression of support for creation. It is dishonest and the author has every right to question it's use.

The WTS and Witnesses in general are very quick to defend the organisation when they see the position of the society supposedly misrepresented and aspects of the religion taken out of context. They do not afford the same courtesy to those whom they quote in matters such as this.

i would also add that they are also happy to spin their own doctrine. Just look at the way the question of shunning is handled on jw.org for an example.

I note that they completely ignored the bit in the passage of scripture about Aaron's sons that said the rest of the people would mourn for them. The edict was just for Aaron, presumably because of his status as a priest.

a disgusting case in the ukman who was sexually abused by his stepfather when he was a boy has told how the ordeal had long- lasting effects.. nick french, 42, was tormented by gary moscrop, inset below, as a boy growing up in brighton, including sexual abuse and psychological cruelty.

last wednesday, his abuser was finally convicted of the historical offences after mr french stood up in front of a jury to recount the abuse, which happened in brighton and sussex between 1979 and 1985. bravely waiving his anonymity to speak to the argus, mr french, who now lives in cumbernauld, glasgow, said: it me a long time to work out that i had not done anything wrong myself and nothing i had done warranted that behaviour towards me.. i have had great assistance from the doctors and, since going back to the police a couple of years ago, it has been a huge weight off my shoulders putting everything down and saying this happened.. moscrop, 76, of hendon street, brighton, was jailed last thursday for ten years after being convicted of ten offences against mr french, including indecent assault, gross indecency with a child, buggery and child cruelty.. mr french first spoke up about a small portion of the abuse in 1987 when he was 15, leading to moscrop being cautioned.

he was finally prosecuted after mr french revealed the full scale of the abuse in 2012, when he could no longer repress it after having children of his own.

Wow. I have not come across these names in my time in the area but I might do some digging to see if anyone I know has more detail on this. Anyone else in Sussex know/knew these people?

whatever the outcome of the appeal, i fear that most of us are going to be very disappointed.. a) obviously if the org wins.. b) if the org loses, they will put their plan 'b' into action - damage limitation - which will iinvolve confidentiality agreements being signed by pending/future victims, thereby settling the majority of cases out of court, and winning in several ways;.

there are probably other benefits, but these are the principal ones, and for these reasons i reckon the floodgates will never be allowed to be opened!!!

they've seen how other establishments have responded to their pedophile cases, and have picked up some good tips on how to minimise the effects.

The WTS have already moved. They have put procedures into place that manage to ensure that Legal drives the handling of cases whilst distancing elders from appearing to be in an organisationally driven hierarchy. They have made it clear individuals can go to the authorities. Chaff of course, but enough to make it even harder to pin responsibility on the WTS.

i think we will be lucky to see anything else on the scale of Conti again. The only way this will ever be a true scandal that could rock the org is is it was clear the org systematically covered things up. The chance of that coming out is minuscule.

As predicted on this forum they are moving to assembly halls. Exactly why the 2 & 1 day CA/SAD events have gone down to 2x1 day events. Make more room. Get more donations in at venues already paid for.

This trend will only increase. Reports are that other countries are also doing regional conventions in JW venues.

@nugget. Just to clarify that the family head has always been able to count a study and an hour a week for family study, even before the family worship move. They do push it more now but it always was there.

@jwfacts. I love this breakdown. The org loves their headline figures and it's all about hours now simply because all the others show poorer ratios than in previous years. The push to use carts will drive hours up but drive the ratios down even further. The WTS just bank on no one doing the maths. Thanks for having the figures so visible.

@brokeback I have never seen anything that suggests the WTS has a higher proportion of pedos than anywhere else in society. I don't think your suggestion of 1 per 3 or 4 congs is unreasonable but would hesitate to conclude that there is active abuse to that level. As Simon has recently pointed out constant exaggeration of the scale of abuse with no evidence does little to promote the real issue which is how WTS procedures give room for abuse, where it happens, to continue unchecked and to potentially expose children to perpetrators without any real safeguards. I get the hyperbole but I am fully with Simon on the value of this type of repetitive message.

Good Netflix shows to watch

in the long winter nights you need some good tv shows to watch while you wait for the eternity between seasons of game of thrones.. we've watched marco polo (pretty good) and have just started watching orange is the new black which is not at all what i imagined (didn't know it was funny!).

house of cards is on the list too as we've heard good things about that.. anyone have any others that are worth seeing?.

Done a glut of two seasons of Walking Dead and finding S3 a bit repetitive. The story is basically move to new place, fight zombies, stay in place, find other people, fight other people, fight more zombies, move on.

The next two seasons look the same. I may dip in and out but I get bored of these shows that don't actually bring anything to a conclusion. Simply repeating the middle of the story just as it allows for loads of seasons gets boring. I would much prefer it if the show developed to explain how society gets back on it's feet.
