I don?t know if anyone else recalls this or not, but I remember reading articles in the WT publications about having business dealings with ex-JWs and how Witnesses should do everything possible to avoid this. They even stated that if your business partner becomes Df?d, you should do everything possible to get out the business (i.e. buy him out or letting him buy you out). Knowing how JW?s will do just about anything to avoid ex-JW?s has made me wonder if anyone here has ever had any business dealings with a JW after they themselves have been either df?d or da?d? If you walk into Wal-Mart and the cashier is someone you knew from the Kingdom Hall, they?d have no other choice but to service you. I?m thinking about something else. What about having a Witness who actually owns the business come and do work for you? What if they refuse? Is this against the law? I recall a couple of years ago there was a HUGE uproar when some African Americans went to Denny?s for a meal and felt that they were slighted because of their race. I believe it resulted in a lawsuit and some type of settlement. Whether this lawsuit was merited or not is not the point. Does this also apply to religion? What would have happened if Denny?s refused to serve someone a meal because they were Jewish? What would happen if you called a local elder who owns a home improvement business and asked him to come and give you a quote on painting your house. Would he do it? Or if you needed some business cards printed and you went to a local printshop that was owned and operated by a Witness couple, would they do this work? It?s pretty cut and dry that someone cannot refuse to hire someone based upon their race, religion or any type of disability but is the same true about refusing to do work for someone based upon these crtiteria? What has caught my attention is that the WT has documented their stand on how to cutoff all dealings with ex-JWs, both personal and business. Is this lawful?

My sympathies Simon. My grandfather died two years ago, he was also my "last grandparent" which makes it esp. sad. Thanks for sharing some of your memories with us.
He had his own way of doing everything and was a bit of a rebel, certainly unconventional.
Now we know where you get it from.

Dave has told me that most elder meetings are a waste of time. A letter from NY has to be read to all the elders or there is a new form they need to see and be told how to properly fill it out. Drivel like that.
Or handing out public talk assignments, shepherding call schedules, etc.
That about sums it up. Other issues discussed are "someone saw sister so & so smoking, we'll need to investigate...blah...blah.." or reading a letter from the CO about his upcoming visit. Jeez, sometimes we wouldn't get done for an hour or so. I'd get home around 11PM. Ug!

Once that's done they probably discuss who are the hottest babes in the hall, or where they'll play golf on the weekend.
Wow, I wish I had been an elder in your congregation!

That's very very sad. These companies need to get their people out of there.
This is what the Saudis are worried to death about. All the forgieners leaving and no one left to service them.

Nice setup, Roy.
Of course, Jefferson had slaves, and Lincoln suspended the right of habeas corpus. So would you suggest that we should let modern Presidents keep slaves or suspend habeas corpus, because Jefferson or Lincoln did it?
Was Jefferson breaking any laws at the time? Also, did he do this as an private, individual or as president of the United States? Lincoln is even a better example. I'm not arguing if what Lincoln did (basically declaring martial law) or what FDR did was right or wrong. All I'm pointing out is the agenda of the Bush bashers. We're at war. The president will need to make tough decisions. I hope the majority of them will be good decisions, but some of them will be bad decisions. FDR made a very bad decision by ordering 130,000 Americans to be placed into camps. He should have been arrested. He wasn't and is instead (as shown in the posts) viewed as the greatest president of the 20th century. On the other hand, Bush is leading us against an enemy who hides in the shadows, who hides in schools and religious buildings. An enemy who uses children to attack our troops. Everything isn't so black and white. People are crying out for him to be strung up by his nuts. I believe it's not because of what he's done, it's because they have a differnt political agenda then he does. Clinton said that Iraq has WMD, John Kerry said that Iraq had WMD, Bush said Iraq has WMD but only Bush is being labeled as a "liar." I'm not a huge fan of Bush (he's going to bankrupt the US) and there are even things about Kerry that appeal to me (the fact that he owned his own business) but I'm just tired of Bush being blamed for every little thing is Iraq. I'm tired of hearing people call for his removal from office. I'm tired of hearing John Kerry bash Bush about the war, the same war he supported just a short time ago. Just be honest and say "we have a differnt political agenda then Bush and we'll use any means to remove him from office" just as the republicans did with the Monica / Clinton issue.

You're suggesting that two wrongs make a right, Roybatty? How old are you? Are you suggesting that America should return to the racial ethics (lack thereof) of 60 years ago?
Huh? Yeah, I'm suggesting America return to...whatever. The issue was who were the greatest presidents of the 20th century. Then I raised the issue of which one commited a more serious crime (worthy of impeachment) FDR or Bush? Are you able to connect the dots? BTW, I'm 36 going on 18. Going to do the whole dam thing over.
