not a blizzard but a pretty good snow fall for north-central illinois.
it feels great being at home on an evening like this, relaxing.
I loved stealing that time. It felt so relaxing to blow off the meeting and sit in the comfort of my living room with the fire going.
Isn't a fireplace in the living room the best? Something about coming home after driving in the fridged cold, starting a fire, kicking back on the couch and relaaaaaxing, just watching the flames dance. Aaaaa....

Face it ... you created the problem. Doesn't seem like such a brilliant idea now though does it?The **real** solution is not to create the mess in the first place. People who objected to the war would also have objected to the things that caused the reasons for the war, ie. arms trade, exporting terror around the world, underminding foreign governments etc ...
Simon, I'm assuming you're also against the British occupation of Northern Ireland. When did British troops going in Belfast and Derry, back in 1969? (and they're still there). You have 30,000 British troops trying to control only 1.5 million people. In Iraq you have 140,000 troops trying to control what, 25 or 30 million people? I'll bet you a pint that our troops will be coming home before the British troops.

Huh? I know that you understand the difference between a "war", like say, the Iraq war, and "the CIA training Afghan freedom fighters" in regards "all the protest" or "the left".
Simon was making a point about those bad boys in the CIA arming the Afghans and how we created the mess in the first place. I'm just asking where were all the protesters?? It's always easy to look back and say "ah hah! see the mess you made!" It's not so clear at the time though. At the time the Afgan freedom fighters were the heros of the world, I believe we even abstained from the 1980 Olympics because the Soviets invasion. So we gave Stinger missles to the Afgan rebels which turned the tide against the Soviets. At the time it looked like we were supporting the good guys, now it's obvious that they don't appreciate what we did for them. Whether it was right or wrong, I don't know. I'm just asking where were all the protesters?
Besides, all of this misses the point. Bush could have gone into Afghanistan his first day in office, and it very well might not have stopped 9/11anyway.
I agree but there would have been HUGE protests. Why do you think only shot off a couple of cruise missles after the embassy bombing and the USS Cole bombing? He didn't want his approval ratings to drop.

Exactly, well almost... Iraq was giving us the finger, Afghanistan was sticking it's boot up our ass. Iraq was well contained, the world community was involved willingly in the containment, and the Arab community and his own people despised Saddam.Yeah, shooting at our military planes, that's not sticking it's boot up our ass. Not allowing UN inspectors in per what Iraq agreed to, nah, that's isn't either. Iraq was contained???? lol! I think people were saying the same thing about Libya.....oh, wait a minute, they had a nuke program that no one knew about ...OOPS!

this is a regular thing now, whenever i go into an upscale restaurant a bunch of jw's start shouting insults and bring up things about my past.. recently i went in to a restaurant i've been dying to try on 14th street and someone on the restaurant staff was telling the other staff members all of my business from the brroklyn heights congregation.. he obviously thought i would give a damn about anything they said.
i just relaxed and ignored them.. when i got up to use the ladies room a bunch of the sisters followed me in fortunately the bathroom was way too small for even two people.
they are some sorry souls, i guess it was like i thought we killed her whats she doing in here?
I don't know how it's been for everyone else but with me (been "officially da'd about 3-1/2 years) it's changed as time goes by. I live in a small, rural town so I regularly bump into JW's at the store, gas station, etc. At first, I'd go out of my way to say "hi" and "get into their face." Not sure what I hoped to accomplish, maybe just some satisfaction that I made them feel uncomfortable. Looking back, I was probably being a bully. Then it kind of went the opposite way, I'd do anything just to avoid them. I think I was trying to bury any reminders of my JW past. Now for the past year I've pretty come to terms with my JW past and am nice to any JWs I meet. I "respect" their right to not talk with me (gag!) but I'll make eye contact and if they seem nice, I'll say hello. A few have even said hello back. But I can't ever imagine a JW shouting insults at me. There's no way I could handle that without doing something. I'd make a very poor follower of Gandi.

I must have missed all the protest in the '80s when the CIA was training "Afgan freedom fighters" against the Soviets. It's always hindesight, isn't it? Again, I'll ask, would people have been protesting the Afgan War had Bush sent in troops before 9/11?

However, looking back, we now know that the war in Afghanistan was absolutely necessary where as the war in Iraq is somewhat murkier.
But when would the war in Iraq HAVE been necessary? After they had a nuke? After they set off a "dirty" bomb in the US? Again, I really believe that if the US had gone into Afghanistan prior to 9/11, all the same arguments that we're hearing against the war in Iraq would have been said about the war in Afghanistan (what threat is Afghanistan to the US? where are the WMD? etc)

But I?m wondering one thing, especially from all the anti-Bush, anti-Iraq war people. How would you have felt if Bush would have ordered troops into Afghanistan prior to 9/11 and justified this because of their harboring Al Qaeda and viewing their threats (and actions) as a threat to the US. Had he done this early enough it just may have prevented the 9/11 attacks. Would we have heard ?oh, there goes the old warhawk, only a couple of month in office and he?s already starting a war.? I have a feeling that all the protests about the war on Iraq would have instead been protests about the invasion of Afghanistan. People world-wide would be protesting, chanting anti-Bush slogans and asking what threat was Afghanistan to the US.
are we ignoring the fact that israel finally took out ahmed yassin, the founder of hamas, which has killed so many innocent people?.

The difference between "war" and terrorism is tactics. When you kill innocent people in an attempt to break national will...that is terrorism.
That's a slippery slope you're going down Yeru. The firebombing of Dresden by the Brits during WWII that killed tens of thousands of German civilians...terrorism or war? The British slaughter of civilian Boers in South Africa....war or terrorism? Just a couple of examples.
