  3/ In the USA, the death penalty is racist in application. For a comparable crime, far more non-whites are executed than whites.

  On those three counts alone the death penalty is wrong. No one has presented any evidence that change these three facts.

  The death penalty isn't racist in it's application. Like all crimes, it's how much money you have. Just ask O.J. Simpson. If you're rich, you can afford a better attorney and have a better chance of getting off or at least a lighter sentence. It happens all the time. One perfect example is the crime of drunk driving. It amazes me the diffences in sentences from one person to the next. One guy will get jail time while the next guy gets a fine. The same is true with murder and the death penelty. If Michael Jordan were to be arrested for murder (or any crime) he'd have a much better chance of getting off then if I were arrested for the same crime. He can afford to hire a dozen of the nation's best criminal defense lawyers. I can't. I'm not saying that this is even a better situation but I'm just tired of people using stats to promote something that isn't exactly true.

  What Ryan should have done is review as many cases that he could and then leave the rest for the next governor. Isn't anyone else amazed that for 4 years this guy didn't do anything and then when he has a few weeks left he's cramming all of this in????

  One case in particular disturbs me. I recall reading about it a few years ago in the paper. These two guys and a lady broke into the home of one of the guy's ex-girlfriend's homes. They killed her two two young kids (with a knife), strangled her, cut out the 8 month old baby from her womb and then kidnapped her 3 year old boy. As they were driving one of the guys in the back seat tortured the little boy (won't go into details) then they killed him. They then dumped his body in an empty lot.

  They should die for this crime.

  Gov. Ryan is a crook. The only reason he's doing this is to divert attention from the Fed. governments investigation of his "license for bribes" scandal. Evidence has now come out that he knew all about it. He's doing this so he's not known as the crooked governor but instead the one who was so "seeking justice for those poor, innocent convicts."

  The KH in my area is on the main road and I'm forced to drive by it whenever I leave the house. Regarding what I think, it depends on what I see. Today when I drove by on my way to the post office I saw only two cars in the parking lot for Saturday morning field service. A couple things went through my head. First, I was mildly surprised at the few people out. Secondly, I thought of the older "sister" who's car I saw and felt sad about all the years she's invested in the JWs. On Wednesday when I drove by I saw all the pioneer car in the parking lot and I thought to myself "what a waste. seven people who could be doing something good for the community instead of giving away magazines that people just throw away."

  Military Service Anyone?

  anyone here ever wanted or had the desire to serve in the military while you were a jw in good standing?

  would you do it now if you were younger and within the ages that they require for new recruits?.

  My father, grandfather and great-grandfather were are military officers. I must confess that I wish I had continued the tradition, esp. when talking with my uncles and cousins who are all navel officers.

  okay, an elder just showed up at my doorstep and he was wearing sweat suit and sweat pants and he was alone.

  Wow, that's a real "no-no" for an elder to stop by a "sister's" home with no one else. If you're pissed off enough and want to get him in trouble, you might consider writing the local body of elders that you felt extremly uncomfortable with him stopping by alone. Copy the circuit overseer and even the Society with your letter.

  Rude Awakening?

  with so many people drifting or daing recently, as indicated by the sheparding call thread and the assembly demonstrations thread, i am wondering how the average jw is reacting.

  how do they view it?.

  usually when someone leaves the org the other members react with astonishment and shock.

  It is my understanding that most people who are disfellowshipped (over 30,000 in any given year?) return back to the Watchtower.

  I've wondered about this. Most of the JC that I served on didn't result in the person being DF'd but there were a few. None of these individuals came back. Was it differnt in other congregations?

  are contemporary decendents of black slaves in the united states justified in asking for monetary reparation for their ancestors' bondage?

  (yes, there are thousands who still line the Deep South and the banks of the Mississippi)

  Don't have to look at the deep south for an example of slavery. Heck, just look here in Chicago. Good ol' Mayor Daley receives some 97% of the black vote in the general elections.

  Reparations arent going to do squat for the African-American community. A change in their leadership and understanding that programs like this one only work against a community will bring about real change.
