Convention coming to a city near YOU...

With a little digging, there is MUCH more to this story.

One of the talks is entitled "Loyally Uphold Jehovah's Judgments – Shun Unrepentant Wrongdoers". This might sound good to some out there, but “wrongdoing” here might simply be a person who disagrees some or many of the teachings of the Watchtower, not believing that Watchtower represents God’s sole channel with mankind since 1919, someone who doesn’t believe Jesus’s invisible presence began in 1914, attending another church, someone who celebrates a holiday like Christmas, someone who votes, or takes a blood transfusion in a life or death situation. Hundreds of thousands of former JWs find themselves shunned by friends and family, which since they’ve been taught only to cultivate friendships with fellow JWs up to that point can leave them without everyone they ever knew or loved.

This is just one part on this convention and merely scratches the surface. If any journalist sat for three days and observed what is being taught, they would find much more than simply people coming together to hear about “loyalty”. Ultimately, what is meant is complete loyalty to the Watchtower Organization.

Do JWs ever doubt that the end is really coming?

as a former dubber i had many occasions to doubt that the end was coming.

i was told it was ok to doubt but not to think about it too much and wait on jehovah.

that bull shit lasted until they changed the meaning of generation in 95 and that was the end of that bull shit for me.

Of course, every JW contends with doubts and cognitive dissonance. I suspect every JW’s has doubts that wax and wane, but never fully goes away. But the barrier of undue influence is steep and keeps them from making a real examination of things like 607, 1914, whether world conditions have been getting worse since 1914, the organization’s many failed predictions…

Until there is such a real examination or reality testing, doubt can easily go both ways. If a JW comes to the conclusion that the end is not around the corner, they might have fearful doubts about that conclusion. “What if it is?”

To some extent, I believe many JWs, while to some extent do believe it, have an authentic corner of their identity that does not fully buy in to the full implications to the teaching that the Armageddon is very close and that most of their non-JW acquaintances, family, coworkers, neighbors, and seven billion others are about to be murdered for all eternity. Of course, this might include inactive and irregular JW, and to some extent, those who were active and could’ve arranged their circumstances to preach more. Otherwise, they would do as the Org prescribed and pioneer, or sell their homes and move to where the “need was greater”, or try to get into Bethel.

Many do live practical lives with day jobs, having a place to live and making plans for the near future to some extent. Of course, Armageddon does still loom in their minds and effects their decisions. They seem caught between fear and the practical. That tension is not easy.

please note: the use of addictive drugs under medical supervision, such as for pain management, would not necessarily require judicial review.

A minor non-addictive pain medication like Aleve is not in the same class as strong medication that may be addictive and might come with harmful side effects.

When I had gout, the doctor recommended that I take more the recommended dose of Advil. He said temporary taking over the recommended amount is okay.

The smug arrogance of "having the truth".

has anyone noticed that witnesses (from the top down) seem to have a quiet form of smug arrogance toward all non witnesses?.

perhaps it comes from being told how "special and unique" they are but they end up looking down on all normal members of the community because they are not witnesses.. so any form of "love" they show those in the territory is also limited as long as they accept the message...otherwise they are viewed contemptuously as "worldly" and therefore of little value...after all,they will be destroyed right?.

I have wondered if anti-depressants help elders cope with following Watchtower rules and cutting people off from friends and family.

There are a few inaccuracies.

The "second coming" aka "invisible presence" was viewed as starting in 1874. 1874 and the endpoint of the "time of trouble" 1914, were all Barbour's calculations. It was only years after Russell's death that the Watchtower changed the "invisible presence" to 1914.
