Those in the late 60s and 70s lived to see the peak of the organization. There was nothing more exciting than being a witness in the 1960s and early 1970s. There was absolute faith that the end was around the corner. Since then they have seen the demise of their dream. Every flash of new light pushed the end even further into the future. At the same time, their life options evaporated. It is hard to look back at a wasted life.

This is called the shingle generation. One overlaps the next, which overlaps the next... This could go on for a long time. At least until all the old farts die and the can start a new light with none of the historic clutter.

Whatever happened to the "written review"?
by pale.emperor indoes anyone know why the written review was stopped?
i relished the half hour silence they'd give you to "write down your answers", time i spend doodling or thinking up cool song lyrics..

I remember when the r&f turned in their exam where it was graded and given back. I was just a kid. So, I never actually turned in my exam.

Did You Go To Meetings in Very Inclement Weather?
by minimus inliving in new england means having lots of snow and cold.
elders were very reluctant to cancel or reschedule a meeting due to the weather.
i lived 3 towns away from the kingdom hall and if it was icy and treacherous my vote would always be to cancel the meeting....and forget about rescheduling!.

Canceling meetings is a local decision. The decision depends on the local elder body. Back in the 60s and 70s, I cannot recall any meetings canceled. But I think that is a generational issue.

if pre 1975 you said "The system will still be here late 2017" what would be the J.W's reaction?
by karter inone word for it.....apostate!
!.

Suggesting that the system would last until 2000 would indicate a lack of faith. Suggesting that the system would last until 2018 would just make you seem bat-crazy. There was no scenario that would take this system until 2018.

2005 Big Announcement (Disappointment)
by Fred Franztone ini remember around 2005, there was an announcement made from the platform that in a few weeks time we would have to remain at the end of the sunday meeting for a big announcement, directly from the society.. i remember all the murmuring, people thought maybe this was going to be related to armageddon.
everyone was excited, people were speculating.
only the po in each congregation had any idea what was going on, and they were frequently pestered for information, but sworn to secrecy, which only hyped things up even more.. then the meeting came, anticipation was in the air, the announcement started, you could hear a pin drop.

I was out by 2005 so I missed this very special event. But your description was, I am sure, spot on.
A similar event happened in 1987 when they had a special announcement and reading of an official letter in response to the 1987 year of International Peace. We were told in advance of the special letter. After reading the letter they passed out a copy of the Peace and Security book. What an f&(^ing let down.
