  what are the top 5 books you would either recommend and/or have had the greatest influence on you?

  (if you only want to mention one or two that's fine as well.).

  I'm impressed you've made it through Michener's stuff. A lot of folks won't even pick him up when they see how thick the book is. I made it about 1/4 of the way through Hawaii.

  I know what you mean. The books are very thick, but you can put it down for awhile and come back to it. It's a committment of time to read them, but they are so full of geology, history and facts, and a great story, usually, that the ones I've read have hooked me. I tried to read some of his other books and "snore..........................", couldn't do it.

  Hawaii is the best though. My husband has read all of Michener's books and still says Hawaii is the best. If you've ever been to Hawaii, I think it's a must read.

  Most of the books listed so far, are a bit highbrow for me. I have a hard time with "established" literature. I find it so dull, it puts me to sleep. Maybe I have ADD.

  The books I have loved over the years are, and I read a lot!:

  Hawaii, by James Michener (read it many times)

  Centenniel, also by Michener

  The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons, by Dan Brown

  All of the Nora Roberts books I can get my hands on..............okay, they are fluff, but very entertaining reading.

  Most of Daniel Silva's books (can't recall the titles)

  Grisham books, all of them

  Memoirs of a Geisha

  Nicholas and Alexandra (read this one about 35 years ago, or more............non-fiction about Russia's last Czar and his wife)

  Saving Graces, biography of Elizabeth Edwards (John's wife)

  A Mighty Heart, by Marianne Pearl (biography)

  Leap of Faith, by Queen Noor of Jordan, biography

  All of Patricia Cornwell's books (especially the ones featuring Kay Scarpetta)

  The Other Boleyn Girl, by Phillippa Gregory (about Ann Boleyn's sister, Mary)

  The Constant Princess, also by Phillippa Gregory (about Katherine of Aragon, Henry VIII's first wife)

  The ones that had the most impact on me in recent years were The Age of Reason, by Thomas Paine (made me finally realize the Bible is nothing special) and The Christ Conspiracy that made me realize that all religions are the same, and almost all have the same beliefs and origins

  What jobs have you done as. . .

  ok we all have stories of "window-cleaners" but some of us had other kinds of work - that you got payed for (slave labor excepted).

  so what kinds of things have you done?

  1. In high school, I worked part time at a bank, sorting and filing checks. That will show my age.

  2. I got married and raised 4 kids for about 25 years, not working outside the home. (I pioneered for a few years)

  3. My next job was cleaning houses. I hated it but the pay was good. I did that for about 10 years.

  4. Network (MLM) marketing. Very good pay, travel and I loved it.

  5. Clerk in a scrapbook store..............I loved this job until the Mormons who worked there, kind of forced me out. I quit. They gave me two weeks pay after I left, so I think they may have been afraid of a lawsuit.

  6. Bookkeeper for our family business. By far the most complicated job, but I do like it.

  ILLINOIS (US) has a bill sitting on the governor's desk that will ban smoking statewide Jan 1 2008. He has until July 30 to sign it. Casinos are hollering loudest and there is an amendment in another bill to exempt them. Likely the governor will past the smoking ban bill, unlikely the exemption will pass.

  They passed this law here a couple of years ago, but the Indians fought it and WON! They aren't subject to the same laws, being under tribal law. Only one county enforced it in the casinos, and the casinos really suffered.

  I don't care. The casinos have good ventilation and it doesn't bother me. Live and let live. I'm glad it's out of restaurants though.

  while you still were jws did any doubting jw ever try to talk to you about the flaws of the org and instil in you some doubt?

  someone had told me that he didn't believe the gb members were straight and honest people that many of their ideas were wrong and that they had a secret agenda to pursue beyond the one they publicly proclaimed.

  at the time i thought he may be right since they seemed to control everything and didn't allow anyone to contribute even the (so called) anointed.

  I had one show up at the door, after we had been gone for a few years. She started by saying "I want to know what you know. I know you wouldn't have left if you didn't know something". I was cautious but told her a few things anyway. She left, and is now a Mormon. Who can figure?

  AURAS......

  without elaborating at length, there has been a lot going on in my life of late and i have sought out some therapies that i have used in the past.

  they've helped a lot.

  they are more along the lines of *natural* therapies.

  Years ago, after leaving the WTS, I had a customer who was Native American, and had many "gifts". She told me then that I had them too, and she could help me develop them. I am part Native American (1/8) and she told me that I was before I could tell her that information. I look quite English, so was surprised that she knew it already.

  She showed me against the dark night sky, to put my fingers together and slowly pull them apart............"what do you see?" I could see kind of a lavendar smoke. She smiled and said "that is an aura". After that I worked at seeing them on people. Now I can do it quite easily but have to concentrate.

  Some people have a large aura that stretches many inches around their bodies, and some have tiny, thin auras. Lots of different colors too. At one time I found an internet site that showed what the different colors mean. I think yellow was "spiritual", not necessarily religious.

  the speaker first starts with what he called the "alphabet soup" of degrees....a.a., b.a., m.a., ph.d., etc.

  ; he said they were nothing more than "sheepskins on the wall.

  I wonder how the educated JW's took that comment. I know of several from this area, who were at the Tacoma convention, who have college degrees.

  The WTS sure takes their donations!

  They send Bethelites to college, to get those degrees. Wish I could tell that to the speaker.

  Robert "Yukon Bob" Hartman (served as CO for 16 years in Alaska..see 84 YB)....then District work...IL/MO, OH,...then had health problems...heard he was in CA in Circuit again....still single....ought to be 80 by now...another real nice guy.

  He was on our tour bus in England, after the conventions in Poland in 1989. He was a real pain. Maybe a nice guy, but he ragged on our guide for taking us to churches, which everyone else enjoyed..............it's history and architecture, for Pete's sake!

  He also gave us a bad time because although I was a pioneer and my husband a longtime elder, he didn't think we should have kept our positions with a disfellowshipped son. He wouldn't shut up about it. We detested him.

  Looking back on it, I think he was gay. He had a roommate that was definitely a closet gay man. Even our guide thought they were a gay couple, until we told her JW's didn't do that sort of thing.

  My favorite CO of all time was Al Michaelson. He was a real person and his wife Louise, was a dream friend. When I had my last baby, an emergency premature C section, she came to the hospital and sat with me all afternoon one day. They weren't serving our congregation, but she had the service group drop her off. Al picked her up later that day. I LOVED them. Louise always asked to be put in my car group for field service, even when I had children with me. She said I made her feel comfortable and she didn't have to perform.

  Jerry Griffiths was also very good, a very fun and real man. His wife was Lana. I heard they split up and he got df'd.

  BETHELITES - Whatever Became of?

  i often times wonder what happened to certain bethelites that i ran around with during my 1990s tenure there.

  while there are still a few left there, the greater majority of them aren't there for various reasons (marriage, disillusionment, left the borg, etc).

  a couple of cats i wonder about - there was one brother who i believe was from kansas, who got his fingers cut off in a printing press.

  Does anyone remember Fred Curry who was the asst. pressroom overseer in the mid-90s? He was a single brother who had several run-ins with pressroom personnel. He was cool to me, but an ass-hole to the masses. Or how about Anselm Packnett who oversaw tape duplication in 360 Furman? Very jovial and funny sense of humor.

  If it's the same Fred Curry, he is in Washington State now. I think he is still single. This one was at Bethel for some time. I knew his sister quite well. His mother and my mother were good friends too.
