Unbelievable.
I am on my mother's Advanced Directive, along with one of the elders. She knows I would never go against her wishes.
Maybe you need to call one of those elders and explain things to him.
my elderly mom had 2 visits from the elders.
she requested hospital liason help because she frequently has been having to go to the hospital, her blood count is low and doctors have told her that because she's a witness, there are certain procedures that make it difficult to attend to her without blood.
when the elders visited her , they recommended that because i "could" decide to give her blood, that i should not be the first person called with rights to give her life saving treatments.
Unbelievable.

*sigh* the joys of parenthood.. i just got a call from my son's school.
he gets picked up by his after school care in a van.
all the kids who get picked up are lined up outside to get ready for their rides.. my son decides it's a good idea to pick up a stick and throw it, hitting a car and putting a small dent in it.
Any time I got a call like that from the school officials, I took my son's side. It's never okay for a public school employee to discipline my sons.
I would agree with you, Gary, for many things. However, some calls from the school can be serious situations. The child needs to know they must obey rules.
The high school called me once to tell me my son was caught smoking behind the school, on a trail. Several other kids were also smoking. When I asked him, he said he wasn't but the others were. So, I defended him, and wouldn't let the school discipline him. (can't recall what they wanted to do but it involved all the kids). The principal said he couldn't swear that Steve was smoking, but was 98% sure he was. I took our son's side. A few months later, he was caught again, and this time he didn't lie.
Sometimes they are guilty and need to realize there are consequences.
As to the 5 year old.....................HE'S FIVE!!!
I have several grandsons in that age range, and none of them would maliciously think they were damaging anything by throwing a stick. I agree they should be talked to, but I don't think I would punish them. Five year olds throw things. They also jump, run and play hard. They are FIVE!!
i am writing a handbook for volunteers that will be volunteering in senior related areas.
one will be visiting seniors in convelescent hospitals and assisted living centers.. one will be visiting them at home bringing food, supplies, and doing home repairs.. for those of you who are seniors yourself can you tell me what your greatest needs have been?.
for those of you who work as nurses or cna's in these centers can you tell me what you would like to see volunteers do to help?.
Both of my elderly parents were in assisted living facilities for a few years. I saw a lot that I would suggest as changes. I suggested them at the time, but was ignored because of cost concerns.
An aide forced my mother to take medications that were not hers. The aide was new and not familiar with the residents and she was mistaken. I reported it to the state, and they did investigate but didn't fire the girl. My mother was 92 and she still has all of her faculties at 94, so she is not demented. In fact she is very well read and highly intelligent, but was not treated as such. The aide forced her to take the wrong prescriptions by saying she would lose her job and that her doctor had just prescribed these things for her. One was an anti seizure mediation and the other was a heart med. Neither are problems my mother had. Within a few minutes they were calling 911 for her and she spent a couple of days in the hospital.
So................I think the aides should be taught to be absolutely sure of medications, and if the patient balks at taking them, go get help.
Also, not all elderly are deaf, so don't shout at all of them.
Not all of them are in dementia, so treat them with respect as another adult. Mom was often treated like a child, which was insulting.
Both of my parents were very lonely, and I visited several times a week. Don't know what to suggest on that one, but maybe they can visit them more.
he really wants to be a navy seal!
my hubby is ex navy and so was his grandfather so he has always heard stories about the navy.
he will be 12 on dec. 19th and i know he has been interested in the military in general since he was about 8. my first reaction was fear because i don't ever want my kids to do anything that could put them in harms way.
He is only 12. Support his goal now, but realize it likely will change many times.
I raise 3 boys, so know this to be true.
a previous thread asked us to list our favorite song.
also, i am wondering what you would consider your all time favorite 'book'?.
i am presently reading, and like very much, the book entitled..................... an arrow pointing to heaven, a devotional biography of rich mullins.
I think the best book I ever read was The Da Vinci Code.
Not sure it's my favorite book, but I really did like it.
my aunt just died, the last one in my dad's family still alive.
she was 89 years old and a special pioneer untill she became too ill to keep up her time.. what's next?.
ken p..
It's hard for us to see that generation dying off. By that I mean, the generation before ours.
It means we are next.
My mother and one aunt are still alive on my side. On Dave's, they are all gone.
I feel for you. So sorry! She sure lived a long life though.
end world hunger?
cure aids?
i'm leaning toward equal education for everyone, with heavy emphasis in the fields of science and history.
For sure........... education can open people's eyes and hearts to truth. I used to pooh pooh the study of philosophy, but now I think everyone should study it. It would go a long way towards informing people of the origins of belief, and religion.

I like your thoughts on education, and think it should be improved especially in this country.
If I had one wish, it would be to end all religion. I think that would take care of a lot of current problems in the world.
i can't help it... i love the freakin' place!.
i know it's insanely expensive, has long lines and possibly, no, actually is quite obnoxious.
i don't care.
Despite the fancy packaging it's old. Look at the expiration date on any package of Starbucks beans, it's sometime in the next 6-18months.
To get the best pricing they buy all the beans they can and as a result they have to over roast to get a consistant product, which is part of their appeal; the same cup, the same atmosphere, the same experience everywhere in the world.
Have to disagree with you............it may be old, but the flavor cannot be beat, in my opinion.
People who don't like the bitter flavor, choose a milder roast. Many prefer Seattle's Best for that reason................bought out by Starbucks, by the way, but they kept the style of coffee for those who prefer it, and the name.
Interesting fact, I learned from my granddaughters: The darker the roast, the less caffeine. The long roasting process takes out some of the caffeine, so the milder roasts have more caffeine.

I live in the Land of Starbucks.............Seattle area.
Two of our granddaughters work at Starbucks............they each get a free pound of coffee every week, more than they and the folks can drink, so they share. The girls get to drink anything they want during their shifts, so they probably don't drink much coffee at home. I have a pound of Christmas Blend in the cupboard from them. Yummy! My favorite coffee blend is Gold Coast.
Occasionally I will buy a latte but mainly I get Americanos. I love COFFEE, but I am partial to eggnog and gingerbread lattes. Where we live there are about 8 Starbucks within a 1 mile radius. Almost all the grocery stores I go to, have one inside too. The only one that doesn't has one at the end of the parking lot. Two drive through ones, very near also.
