the governing body should be hanging their heads in shame watching how the events unfolded in south africa at oprah winfrey's school.

her fearless way in meeting the problems head on, not covering up, calling in expert help, investigating, apologizing, getting all adults away from the campass so the girls could talk openly about what happened.

those girls came first.

I had the same thought, that the GB should take an example from her, but they won't.

I truly admire her and record her show everyday to be sure I don't miss any of them. I hope I am learning a thing or two from her example.

I was watching a news program the other night, about her press conference, and they had an African reporter talking from South Africa, and she said that Oprah has been deeply criticized in that country since the beginning of her efforts to build her school. They evidently didn't like it that an American celebrity was coming in to change their culture, so many of them feel this is what would happen and she should have expected it. I had never heard that anyone didn't want the school to happen.

i guess this means you can maim and kill animals all you want, just so long as you don't enjoy it too much.. sorta like being a isrealite warrior who makes a living killing people but yet is commanded to "hate violence".

There was a family of men in our congregation that were obsessed with hunting. They talked about it all the time, and were so eager for hunting season, they were ridiculous. They said they did it to provide food for the family, but the wives and kids would never eat the deer, elk or bear that they killed. They ended up giving most of it away.

One of them was a good friend of ours, and he never could justify it to me, when I pointed out that the family wouldn't eat the meat. They just loved hunting.

I hated the whole idea of it.

Have you changed your mind about ABORTION?

i'm not after a discussion on the rights or wrongs on abortion, what i'm asking is whether or not your views have evolved over time.. perhaps leaving the watchtower was enough to allow your true feelings on abortion to find expression.

maybe abortion is one of those subjects where you still find yourself in agreement with your old jw self.

did becoming a mother change your perspective in any way or solidify your views?.

I was very much against abortion as a JW.

Now I feel it is such a personal thing, that no one should decide for you if it's right or wrong.

Pro choice, definitely.

Update: Last Nights Meeting

first of all i would like to think everyone for the support i recieved yesterday.

i would also like to shed some light on my past, hopefully this does not give it away as to who i might be.

my wife and i were both raised as jw, we were both baptized when were fifteen years old.

Well, I've been out of town for four days, and find this on the board! Wow, what a time you are having.

So happy for you and your boys. Be extremely patient and loving with your wife. We went through the same thing in our home (all but one of our children were gone by then) and it was horrendous, but I eventually saw the light. Hang in there.

Are there any known JW doctors?

i think there is one at my hospital because of what a coworker said one time in reference to blood doctrine.

i can't imagine them going into medicine with all the time it requires, between school, residency, etc.

Yes he was. GB flew here to see him about once a year. He had a huge practice, about 60% JW. He went to school after becoming a JW, after leaving the Navy. No one ever talked to him about higher education. He went at night for years and years, starting when I was about 4 or 5. But that was a long time ago. Things change in the Borg.

Dad passed away in January 2006, at age 92, happily not a JW.

Vaccinations

i'm not a big fan of vaccinating every person willy-nilly for just anything - especially young kids and babies.

there is still mercury being put into some vaccines despite that being a known toxin...sammieswife.

deaths associated with hpv vaccine start rolling in, over 3500 adverse affects reported.

My father was a Naturopathic Physician, so I had no vaccinations growing up............NONE, and never have had any. I had chicken pox and measles, but no mumps or other things, like diphtheria, whooping cough, etc. I survived childhood and am extremely healthy.

I only vaccinated one of our babies, and he has a form of autism, and I am positive it contributed to that. He definitely was different after the MMR vaccine.

When my older children were in grade school, I caved to pressure and got them vaccinations...........they were older so I felt more comfortable about it. My second son got Mumps from the vaccine. Wouldn't you know?

I do not like them at all.

GB on Airplanes

have you ever heard of anyone running into the gb on an airliner?

i have not and so that only leads me to believe that they charter jets to move them around the world.

how do they travel?.

when we went to Poland for the special conventions in 1989, there were GB on our flight..........in first class.............of course, at the time, I thought they deserved it.

When Max Larson and his wife visit our area (he is from here, and visits my mother when he is in town) they say they fly first class. His wife is an invalid, and supposedly, she needs the space in first class. I really don't mind that they fly that way. I've done it a few times, and it's the best. If someone wants to buy it for them.........a circuit, an individual, or the WTS, let them. Who cares?

Cloth Diapers

so .. my husband and i are going to start trying for kids next year.

we had a long discussion last night about disposable diapers vs. cloth diapers.

i know this decision can wait but i just like talking about my expectations early rather than end up with conflict later on.. i want to use cloth diapers and he thinks disposables are the way to go.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned landfills. Where do all those dirty diapers go?

Cloth is so much better I think. When our kids were in diapers, disposables were not what they are now. Emergency, and vacations only.

By the time we had our fourth baby in 1979, they were in much more general use. But, he was very fair, red headed, and had extremely sensitive skin. We opted for a diaper service which was MUCH cheaper than buying all those diapers. I highly recommend them.

We still used disposables when we traveled, but he always had a sore bottom from them.
