  A very dangerous belief!!

  we were unfortunate enough to be invited to spend some time with some of my jw relatives the other day.

  my husbands jw relatives totally shun us but, my side of the family occassionally 'stoop' to allow us into their presence once in a while.

  (a totally worthless occassion in which no 'real' conversation is permitted!).

  So, I take it there are no active witnesses left in your family, or they're never discussed (or both)? That is serious progress - that you were JWs and your grandson has no clue of their existence. "Bad church" is definitely a perfect response to his query!

  The only one he knows is his great grandmother, my mother, and it never comes up. She would never talk to him about it, so he just didn't know.

  My husband's youngest brother and his family are all JW's, but they cut us off years ago. He has recently started communicating again, first with a note with his email address, and then with emails. We'll see what happens. So far they are pretty tame, just catching up with family stuff.

  On Christmas Eve, at our daughter's house, my niece, who is 10 years younger than I am, was talking about all we missed not giving our children the Christmas experience because we were Jehovah's witnesses.

  Our daughter's son, age 10, said "who are Jehovah's witnesses?" We laughed out loud, because we've come so far so that he didn't know who they were..

  The answer his mother gave was "it's a bad church". Loved it!

  New Year's Resolutions

  as jws, we weren't supposed to make new year's resolutions.

  i secretly did so for years, anyway.

  last year, i resolved to give less unsolicited advice.

  3. I also want to pursue a new creative hobby. I don't know exactly what that is yet, but I plan to have fun finding it.

  Try scrapbooking.................I am not really artistic, but love to do all kinds of craft projects so I try to develop the "artist within". I have been scrapbooking for about 10 years and love it, love it. Really gets my creative juices flowing.

  My new year's resolutions (I always did them as a JW too) are:

  1. have to lose at least 20 pounds, ideally 50

  2. change some bad habits that affect my health (mainly getting some exercise incorporated into my life)

  3. clean out drawers and cupboards and the file cabinet (I've made this one every year for years and haven't done it yet, but this year I AM GOING TO DO IT!!)

  Out in Service & Making Bark-Calls

  when the dogs came rushing toward the two sisters out in service, the scaredy-cat sister got behind the other sister for protection.

  I remember two different householders letting their Doberman's out when I knocked on their doors. I had a young child with me both times. I love dogs and had one, but was terrified of those Dobies. They barked and didn't attack, fortunately. Their owners called them off both times and we left.

  Usually if dogs ran at us while walking on the street, I could just call to them and pet them and they were fine. It's all in the hands and how you hold them, letting them know you aren't a threat.

  Death Sucks

  there were twelve actors that i liked that died this year.

  most of them were about 10 years older than me.

  that means, that if i'm lucky, i've got about 10 years left.

  Well..............I'm 61 and my father died in January at 92, officially of Alzheimer's disease, but he had had some strokes, but no cancer or heart disease. My mother is 94 and not showing any signs of death. She is very sharp mentally and very healthy, just frail with osteoporosis. Her heart is strong, low blood pressure (me too) and no signs of any kind of cancer.

  My grandparents lived very long lives (89, 94,........one grandfather died at 78 after a long recovery from a fall, a blood clot got him...the other grandfather disappeared in 1928, so we don't know what happened to him) and my great grandparents on both sides lived a long life (92-94), so I am thinking I have at least 30 years left. I hope I can avoid Alzheimer's though. As far as we can remember, Dad was the only one in the family who had it. Everyone else lived well into their late 80's or into their 90's with sharp minds.

  What My Parents Gave Me...

  i have been on my own for some time now and have become the next generation.

  They gave me a strong sense of family loyalty, and lots of stories about my roots, much of it on paper going back 8 generations. I am sure that contributed to my love of genealogy research.

  But, the family togetherness was emphasized in a very big way and I shaped my life with that concept. Unconditional love. When I stopped going to meetings, that love never wavered and still hasn't 10 years later.

  My mother was a wonderful cook, and taught me so much. I could cook a full meal for company when I was about 14, and did, when Mom had to work one Saturday unexpectedly. She called me and walked me through most of it. I had been cooking for years by then though so knew what I was doing.

  there were a couple of things in the movie about Selena that a JW would notice that they were witnesses. In their kitchen the calendar was a JW calendar. In the living room, the Live Forever book was on an end table.

  That's all I noticed. But I saw the movie again recently and didn't see them, but I doubt I would notice such things now.

  what if a brother or sister say happy new year and another brother heard it, how would the elders handle it?.

  much ado about nothing!

  I wasn't an elder, but my husband was for 25 years, and I used to say "Happy Birthday" when I knew it was someone's birthday, and Happy New Year all the time. We even had New Year's Parties.

  I sent birthday cards to my brother in law who is a year younger than I am, just to remind him he wasn't "that young". My mother never failed to call me on my birthday to wish me a happy one, and still does.

  It was all done tongue in cheek, and everyone knew it.

  Maybe we are just in a more liberal area. I just can't imagine anyone getting upset by someone saying "Happy New Year".

  My Mom passed away today.

  after a lenthy illness, 10 years in total, my mother, margaret stecko, passed away peacefully today surrounded by family.

  she was 84, and leaves behind 3 children, 5 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren.

  she was a jw but never shunned me.

  for example, jewelry can give clues...such as whether or not you're married... sometimes women wear bracelets with the birthstones of their children...

  I did have on my wedding ring, but nothing to give away that we own a business and support several families. No birthstone bracelet, but I do own one. Just didn't have it on that day.
