Has anyone seen this documentary? I saw it on HBO and it is very enlightening and upsetting.
It is about how easily the voting machines in the U.S. can be hacked into and votes changed. There are many, many examples and proof shown about times it was done. In Volusia county, FL, one of the machines showed Al Gore getting a negative 16,000 votes.
Check your HBO schedules and see this one. It will be on again.
Here is a synopsis: http://www.hbo.com/docs/programs/hackingdemocracy/synopsis.html
From the HBO website: This cautionary documentary exposes the vulnerability of computers - which count approximately 80% of America's votes in county, state and federal elections - suggesting that if our votes aren't safe, then our democracy isn't safe either.

Raising well rounded and balanced kids...what have you done right?
by My MILs worst nightmare, a nonJW inparenting is one of the most difficult yet rewarding things there is.
doesn't every parent want their children to have a good moral compass, to have good manners, to be socially adept, to be compassionate, to reach their potential and even overachieve in terms of school and career, to appreciate and understand history, science, the arts and the world as a whole, to play team sports when they are younger so they can benefit from physical activity and the comraderie of a team sport, and above all to be a critical thinkers who are strong and independent so that they will not become easy prey to abusive organizations and/or abusive people?.
as a parent i have many times felt like a real failure and at other times like i am actually helping them to reach their potential.. what do you feel that you have done right in raising well rounded and balanced kids?

Talk with them, not at them, include them in your activities and conversations.
Don't try to change who they are. They are an individual and you can only control so much about them. At a certain point, you will have no more control, so accept what they've become.
Compliment them for their wise choices, their kindness, their grades, etc. Don't make a big issue of how they look.............it makes a self esteem problem, if you do that.
Most importantly: Love them unconditionally and tell them frequently how much you love them and how proud you are of them.
(I'm sure there are more things, but those are the things I did for my children..............most of it was just instinct, doing what comes naturally when you love someone and are not threatened by them)

I do consider myself to be a christian, but not in a religious sense. I do not believe Jesus was the son of god, god, or anything other than a very smart man. I think his philosphies are great, and I try to live by those principles.
I think I'm an Agnostic. I'm not an Atheist, but close to it. Who knows for sure anyway? No one!!

Next on the agenda will be to work the Commentary of James into a talk.
We know one of the main contributors to that book. He is an ex JW too. I think the book is kind of on the "do not use" list isn't it? Should be interesting.
I'm sorry I missed this thread when it started. I think you did a very brave, good thing. I hope they were listening and not zoning out. The last time, my husband gave a talk like that, they only assigned him Bible readings, and he still made comments they didn't like, so he wasn't given talks again. He had resigned as an elder, but was still considered a very spiritual, learned Bible man. A few months later, we were gone, so it was no big loss to not have talks in the school.

About every 10 years we might have a white Christmas. It does snow here in the Pacific Northwest, but it usually doesn't happen until January, and it's gone in a day or two.
Sure looks pretty at Christmas time.

Were you accused of starting your own RELIGION?
by Amazing inmouthy said that she was accused of this ... and i remembered that i too was accused of starting my own church.
supposedly, i went up and down the west coast, gathering up followers, and then secured a church building in the seattle area.
the book, crisis of conscience, mentioned that allegations were made against some bethelites who supposedly secured a meeting location, and started a religion known as 'sons of freedom' or 'sons of liberty.

My husband was accused of "starting a church". We heard that from people all over this area. Apparently the elders would call on someone who had quit attending meetings and asked them if they had joined Dave King's church. How silly.
That's the last thing we would have wanted. Enough religion already.

It would have to be: Tom Selleck and Neil Diamond.
Kind of gave my age away, didn't I? Tom is a few months older than I am, and I think Neil is close.
