just thought i'd post this newspaper article about an ongoing battle with a religious group that is quite prevelant in sw ontario, canada called the church of god, a somewhat moderized mennonite group started in 1881.. a family's 7 children have been taken away by the children's aid society over the issue of spanking.
this group upholds the bible's "spare the rod, spoil the child" rule to the point of using actual sticks, belts, switches etc and express that pain has to be felt to instill respect for discipline.
id heard about this when it happened and havent investigated much further so i dont know about these other issues that are being masked under corporal discipline. but my initial response and i still hold to it is that dragging seven kids away, kicking and screaming, from their parents cannot possibly be good for anybody. isnt there a better way to approach this?

meta: oh, im not saying that suicide is not a problem, i also am personally familiar with it. however, i got the impression that you were speculating about a sweeping tide of suicides as cognitive dissonance deepens or even shatters in some kind of future scandal. its this dark view of JW future that i was talking about.

got email from you peter but id like to maybe work out a location as a group so its convenient. im coming from king and spadina so anywhere in the west downtown is easy for me. i can recommend places around here, if you like. the oldest bar in toronto, the wheat sheaf, is at king & bathurst. dont know if u had something more elaborate in mind.

twenty years ago our congregation had to live with a real butt-bruising presiding overseer.
he had plenty of counsel for everyone.
when ministerial servants or other elders were on the platform, giving a talk, he would raise his hand and comment, even when the km didnt suggest audience participation.

re: calls to inactive and irregular. did he actually use names or details that allowed the audience to infer identities?

good comments meta, tho i find your 'suicidal' conclusions disturbing. actually i dont think a wholesale disillusionment of the kind that might lead to such a crisis of faith is likely. i think (and hope) that people will continue, as they have been, to leave pretty much when they are ready to. There is a rocky road in doing so for a while but i think it will only get easier to traverse as more people, upon coming to the road, will look up that individual they knew who started to tell them of the reasons why they conscientiously had to leave the Truth before being cut off in mid-sentence, never to be heard from again.
"so, what was that you were saying?" they will ask.

there is a possibility that during my time as a jw i had knocked on every door and rang every doorbell and met just about every person in my whole area, especially during my over zealous pioneer episodes.
now that i have left i have the dilemma of how to show everyone i'm normal again!
it would be nice to walk down the street without sensing that everyone is trying not to meet your glance (mild paranoia!).
couldnt you just get a tattoo or start spiking your hair or something sufficiently worldly so that people will know. youd probably be surprised how many conversations a wild do could help strike up!

believe it or not the motives are love, at least in my case.
i know that sometimes jw's on this board do not show that, but it goes the same with some ex-jw's too.. am i going against wt counsel?
yes, but i am willing to pay the price to help my fellow man, specially if i see that they blinded by resentment and are going contrary to jehovah's will.. why does the wt give the counsel to stay away from site such as this?
you seem sincere to me and i think an honest dialogue about issues presented here can only be helpful to everyone involved. try not to let people piss you off.

we have little too worry about in the way of an american retaliation. if worse comes to worse we can just erase our name off of the map, confident that americans will never be able to find us. :)
