Greek heroes & the nephalim
by Simon incan anyone remember this being in print or hearing the same thing .... i remember more than one talk where the suggestion was made that the larger-than-life greek heroes were the same nephalim or "mighty ones of old" mentioned in the bible.. does anyone else remember this?

Dave, LMAO!!!!! (How's the nicotine withdrawal going... hope you are doing ok.... my significant other (sounds like you have the same profession, btw) is in circumstances startlingly similar to those that you described being in about a month ago....*sigh*)
Simon
MacH provided "published" information (thanks MH btw) but I wanted to add that when I was studying, I was definitely led to believe that the Nephilim WERE the offspring of materialized demons and daughters of men, and that was precisely where the greek "myths" came from. The only thing that threw them was when I asked why the "demons" chose to be MALE, and not female. (This issue has been discussed somewhere on the forum and it was VERY interesting... not enough caffeine in my system yet to go look for it tho..)
An additional note: After I'd been a witness for several years, the subject of "alien abductions" was alive. Sisters were reporting weird experiences: being molested by demons in their sleep, even to the point of finding - um - "stuff" on themselves upon awakening. (Those pesky yard sales...) These subjects were discussed with grave seriousness by people who were borg-faithful through and through... not "fringy" types (like me ). They were suggesting that the demons, since they could not materialize in the "flesh" anymore, were desperately trying to find ways of reproducing themselves via human DNA, impregnating abductees, producing hybrids, blah blah blah.
Just thought that information was relevent to the topic you brought up.
Shelby, I read your contribution with interest. It is certainly plausible and a defendable argument. I don't agree, necessarily, but the information will go into the "think tank" area of my brain. (It's teensy but I do what I can do....)
Some questions for you, if I may:
Because the spirit can 'hide' in vessels of flesh with its blood (which is the entire purpose for us being here in the first place - we were hidden from 'enemies' in the spirit realm, in 'earthen' vessels, until such time as we can be 'fertilized' with HOLY spirit... and 'born'... again...)
(Bold added)Could you please explain what you meant by that (the bold part)? It doesn't really coincide with the Genesis story... the account in the bible indicates that there was no rebellion until after satan got "prideful". Are you saying that the creation of an earth with a human populace was so that God could "hide" certain beings? Who got chosen, and why? Weren't the ones remaining in some chaotic spirit realm therefore left out in the cold, so to speak?
ALL flesh had to be destroyed in order to expose such spirits. Thus, with the exception of Noah, his household, and certain animals whom God KNEW had no such 'bad' spirits in them, all other flesh was destroyed in the deluge, even the flesh of animals (spirits can only occupy living creatures... things that live: humans, animals, plants, etc. Things that contain... and CAN contain life within them.) How did God know Noah, his household and such animals also did not possess bad spirits? Because God can see what is IN the flesh, unlike us: we can see only the OUTWARD appearance.
Why was "exposure" necessary at all if, as you say, God can see what is IN the flesh? Or was "exposure" necessary for other beings' "benefit"?Was this action ("exposure" via the flood) taken on God's part as a temporary stop-gap type of measure? It seems like things are right back where they were before the "flood". If not worse. Wouldn't it make more sense if God had taken action with more effective results? (No disrespect or irreverence intended... truly.)
Thank you,

Chemistry Proof - Topic: "hell"
by lauralisa inthis hilarious thing has been around for awhile, but teejay's "applicant" post made me think of it again.... .

CHEMISTRY PROOF
This was an "Actual Question" given on a University of Washington chemistry midterm.
"Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)? Support your answer with proof."
Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools off when it expands and heats up when it is compressed) or some variant.
One student, however, wrote the following:First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So, we need to know the rate that souls are moving into Hell and the rate they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving.
As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different
religions that exist in the world today. Some of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell.Since there are more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all people and all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for
temperature and the pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand as souls are added. This gives two possibilities:
1) If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until All Hell breaks loose.
2) Of course, if Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.
So which is it? If we accept the postulate given to me by Ms Therese Banyan during my Freshman year, "That it will be a cold night in Hell before I sleep with you," and take into account the fact that I still have not succeeded in that area, then (2) cannot be true, and so Hell is exothermic.
This student got the only A.

Serious question -- LIBIDO
by spaceghost inhi i'm kinda embarrassed to ask you this, but you people seem like an okay gang... i have a very low sex drive, and i don't know what to do about it.
i love my bf, and i find him really attractive and all, but lately (2 months) it's been getting really hard on us.
i just don't "feel" like having sex at all.. now i don't want to consult a doctor, and that's final.

Hi Spaceghost,
Some additional information would be helpful - both to you, and for those from whom you asked for feedback.
How old are you?
Do you like yourself?
Are you clinically depressed? (lack of sex drive is one indicator, as is anhedonia (inability to feel pleasure) erratic sleep patterns, anxiety, etc.)
Would you change anything about your body? If so, what would you change?
Are you physically healthy?
Were you raised a jw - are you living in a situation that is condemned by their teachings?
This information may give you a "direction" to go in in seeking help. I hope you seek to find relief from the causes, and not just blast at the symptoms - they'll only return in the future.
I know a lot about this subject. It isn't fun. But it can get wayyyyyyy better!

White Teeth.
by Englishman injust read the first 50 pages of "white teeth", a novel by zadie smith.. hilarious!.
now number 3 in the uk paperback charts, zadie smith's portrayal of a jw jamaican immigrant family is brilliant.
overlooking the heroine (clara) wearing of a jw sash as she tries to distribute hundreds of watchtowers to her schoolmates, the book is quite well researched.. it's 1975 and clara's newly converted boyfriend wants in with the 144,000 - the other sheep are losers!.

Christmas and birthdays...
by Celia inthis thought came to me this morning, as i was lying in bed, trying to figure out which end is up.... the jws dont celebrate christmas, the birth of christ their savior.... because in earlier times, the same date was used to celebrate the return of the sun, the winter solstice.... (by the way, celebrating the return of the sun makes a lot of sense... no sun - no life..... we know the sun is there, we know what it does, no such thing about a god...) .
but i regress.. so, because on this date, pagans used to celebrate the sun, the jws dont want to celebrate christs birth..... its a little bit like not wanting to celebrate the birthday of a loved one, because he/she was born on the same day as a bad guy in history, like hitler, or napoleon, or slobodan milosevic, or saddam hussein, or osama bin laden... etc.... hmmm... my thinking is flawed, because, of course, the jws dont celebrate birthdays either.... question : did they first decide that christmas was evil or birthday celebrating was ?.
edited because the emoticon does not work.... :) :?

A big warm hello to you Angharad...
Better keep your mailbox locked.... with all the mail Simon gets I bet people are going to start going to you to try and "influence" him. And now we know you have a "chocolate" weakness..... and even tho jw's aren't programmed with virgin Mary intercessory options, it's in human celllular memory... it could be way too tempting....
I'll fix you up with a "chocolate pound of the month" club if you get Simon to show me how to download a pic from an iMac using IE....
LMAO @ waiting...

Hi ...
what a great question.... reminding me here like a brick to the head how I just "swallowed" the rhetoric without enough challenge to it...Frenchy, this is not a direct answer to your question but a pitiful thought immediately came to mind as to birthdays: I remember there being a consistent reinforcement of the joyous conceptcontained in Eccl. 7:1: A name is better than good oil, and the day of death better than the day of one's birth.
Ick!!!! Sheeplike, we'd all sit there in our droned state nodding at the idea that death and its delivery from this futile and diseased current "system of things" was a great thing! I guess celebrating "birth" would mean you JUST MIGHT ACKNOWLEDGE that there is some joy and goodness to be had in life. Well, we all know the price if you are actually happy when you're a witness, or if you enjoy the beauty that can be found in anything not directly involving "service". Full time service, that is.
When I was studying and these topics - birthdays, christmas - Easter, etc. - were being explained to me, I brought up the custom of wedding rings and the origin of them which is WAYYY pagan. It was somehow deemed appropriate by some circular illogic. I didn't push it because I liked wearing my wedding ring, and realized that if we were to actually eliminate ALL customs tainted by pagan influence, we'd have to live naked in trees and eat bugs.
MERRY CHRISTMAS

LMAO.....
Comf,
if someone could help me manage to get anything other than typed words posted on this thing, you gotta deal. I promise. (Neck down shot tho). I'm 98% sure there's a digital camera in one of those pretty packages waiting to be opened on Dec. 25.
LB:
When I was 16 some friends and I went to a strip mall (LOLOL cracking myself up here I MEAN THE KIND THAT IS like in one long "strip" of stores with a sidewalk.....)
At one end there was a restaurant. We went into the bathrooms, took it all off, took deep breaths, ran thru the restaurant, out the door, zoomed along the jammed storefront sidewalk, BUCK NEKKID, and DOVE into the open doors of our accomplice's waiting car. I think we got a whole six-pack of beer for our efforts..... and an adrenaline rush that lasted for weeks.
I'm a grown up now, and completely appropriate and mature in all aspects of my behavior at all times. I'm also a millionaire princess with a chia pet collection on loan to various museums.....

Hey teejay,
Once I was out with one of my sons in tow (he was I think 10 at the time) and a woman came to the door in a t-shirt and panties. I swear. It freaked him out, and NOT in a good way.
I spontaneously tossed the whole "we're on a mission from god" spiel and ended up inquiring whether she was alright.... she said she was, but I went back on a RV (without my son this time!) to make sure. My "antenna" said things were not ok. She did end up getting some intervention with domestic abuse.
I can't remember if I placed any magazines with her.... lol
ps: working on a friendship with unclebruce.....
Warm regards to you all
