Considering organizing an unbelieving spouse support group in my area. Any suggestions?
by garyneal ini like coming to this board because i like the feeling of knowing that i am not alone in dealing with jehovah's witnesses and their mind control.
however, i still feel largely alone because i cannot find any actual people in the area i live who is dealing with a situation similar to mine.. as most of you know, i am the unbelieving spouse of a jehovah's witness and i find it frustrating to know that holidays, birthdays, etc.
are not held in as high regard by my wife as they are for me.

tough situation you are in. Start saying NO now. Keep saying NO - it is your friend, your guardian angel. Paste the NO somewhere prominent in your home. Practice saying it in front of a mirror. If it sounds a little harsh and/or if an elderly sis is on the receiving end then practice saying
I'm so sorry I cannot do this for you now - I hope you find someone else. Don't elaborate - just walk away

I was given combatting mind control by steve hasan and found it very useful.
I have also found myself defending and using the concept of intelllectual honesty in my contact with family. I've said I am not trying to change anyone's beliefs or cause problems for others by raising questions and issues but that I want to be honest with myself and others. At the end of the day we only have one life and I want to leave a legacy of being authentic in my dealings with family.

Translating the NWT in the Shadows

thanks for replying Juan. It was this comment of yours that I interpreted to mean that modern scholars were praising the NABRE highly. my mistake - sorry
Those who are religious generally see such biblical scholarship as Spirit-directed, evidence of God at work. An atheist friend of mine who recently retired from teaching theology on the university level (sounds funny, I know, but there some out there) is among those who, while admitting no belief in a god or the religious teachings found within, find such a dramatic change in modern Bible translation as encouraging and "the only type of scholarship worthy enough to transmit such ancient thought for the audience of today."
As Romans 10:13 came up in Sundays discussion of the Watchtower I wanted to check how this is rendered in NABRE's NT . In contrast the NWT translation is:
for everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved. The cross reference in the NWT takes us to Joel 2:32: And it must occur that everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will get away safe"
The context of Romans 10 is clear that kyrios out to be translated LORD (as in the NABRE) meaning Christ and not Jehovah. But NWT translaters have to falsify this verse to make the NWT consistent with their own theology - that the name Jehovah will provide safety now and during armageddon. Whereas if Paul was quoting from Joel 2:32 then he was making a direct connection between the God of the old testament and Jesus and moreover to the extent of seeming to indicate that they were one and the same person. Even if he was not suggesting that they were one and the same, he was at least suggesting that the name to be called upon today is Chirst not Jehovah. (I spent a lot of time researching this before the meeting yesterday and is why I mention it here). I don't however wish to turn this thread into a trinity v unitarian debate.
Okay here is another thought I found interesting and that I did not know previously - that much of the order of catholic church service is based on 1st century Jewish synagogue service. Seen in that light it does make sense not to use the divine name in church service.
Jehovah's Witnesses tend to forget (or conveniently fail to mention) that Catholics (and by association the Orthodox) are spiritual descendants of the original Christians who called themselves Jews before they were expelled from the Jewish congregation. As such they have left much of their liturgy (worship proceedures) unchanged since the days of the synagogue, including the basic order of the Mass or Divine Liturgy (which is almost exactly like a Temple worship service, minus the Liturgy of the Eucharist/Holy Communion). As such certain practices, like leaving the Divine Name to be uttered only by the High Priest, have never been altered.

How can they claim that every prophecy in the bible has a greater fulfilment today???
by highdose inseems that the gb take every story they can in the bible and claim that although it happened then, it will also happen now.
although this time it will be the gb who is jehosophat, david, paul, jermiah... etc etc take your pick.
what scriptual basis do they have for this belief??

highdose - from what I have read this was a common practice in the first century being common practice in mythmaking. The difference though is that both audience and mythmaker would have been aware that stories and prophecies from the past were being retold to benefit the present generation and to reshape the future.
Another point - how far the mythmaker would go in excluding all other opinions depended on how despotic the leader for whom the myth was being re-done was.
edit: I love stories and would love to be part of a religious organisation that retells myths with a present context in mind but would not like to see this sold as the one truth.
I must be a fence sitter - lol

Hi Juan
although I have never been a catholic and have only been exposed to a few bible translations (mainly of course to the NWT) I would still be interested to see why the NABRE receives such high praise from modern scholars. Would you please supply an example from the NABRE
The watchtower we studiend on sunday was very vitriolic against the catholic church for taking the name of God out of the bible. So I guess they would be asking if the name of god has been included in the NABRE especially in the NT. They would dismiss the NABRE on these grounds. (of course I don't agree with JWs on this but would like to know nevertheless how the NABRE translates the tetragrammaton/adhonai, kyrios - is it always Lord or God or does it sometimes use YAHWEH like some Catholic bibles)
edited to add: okay so I guess this is what you mean
Surely it won’t be welcomed by some who prefer previously-used terms over modern ones, even if these are no longer understood and don’t represent the text as accurately, but the majority of today’s Catholics seem eager to welcome it so far. I'd like an example please (preferably from the NT) thanks. i understand if you cannot share such info until the bible is published on Wednesday.

Madrid Zone talk
by wantarevolution inok - so we were visiting friends in madrid this weekend, and went to the zone talk.
around 13500 in attendance at an old bull ring and the talk was given by david splane.
improvements for the field were to make sure that everyone is preached to - there is a tendency just to preach to south americans and ignore spanish people - also magazine placements are down, they have to be improved.

hey darth
I so agree wtih your take in the op. The thing is Able and his type got to tell the stories. I'm glad they retained Cain's voice though because through him we can hear the voices of those who are silenced by city builders. I'm not saying it is wrong to build cities or anything like that but that it is better to hear disobedient voices too and take on board what they have to say.
