It is such a double standard in dub-world. From the platform & mags we are exhorted to pioneer, not care about material things, etc etc, but in reality poor pioneers are pitied, & most people are doing what they can to buy houses, cars, go travelling etc. I never understood it. You're either one thing or another. But no - I had to come to the conclusion that most dubs are hypocritical realists.

JWs and socio economic status
by greendawn indo you think that someone's socio economic status determines how they get treated (behaved to) by the jws?
.
can someone high up the ladder get away with more things especially if he made big donations to the society and do they look down upon those lower down?

EVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW
by Terry inthere are a large number of very smart people here.
a vast array of intelligences has a power and scope quite out of the ordinary.
ask a question you've always wanted to know (not necessarily religious in nature; just in general) from trivia to personal inquiry......let it out now.

Thanks Gill, I'll give it a try!

I have a sneaking suspicion this is so ...

Sunday Program - My input
by Flindersgirl inhey all!
i have about 9 million emails and phone messages today..so that's interesting.
aside from having the intial reaction of how horrible i look on telly (which i always have) and my partner swatting me for saying it i was amused to see they only used one quote from what was a long interview.

Hi Mim, I can't believe I missed the program, but I read the transcript. It came over well, I thought. Often a bit of academic 'cred' can convince people where personal experiences do not, so well done! I don't think you're in any danger of religious zealots (that is quite an amusing idea - a bookstudy group carpooling to the uni to bible-bash you!)
I'm sorry to hear about your experience with your mother. When I was a Witness I heard vague whispers of abuse in the backgrounds of a few of my female friends - it is only now that I realise that absolutely nothing was ever done about these things, & the culture of secrecy has probably affected a lot more people than we realise. I grew up in Corrimal Cong (where Simon Thomas & a few other victims were), a bit before my time, but affecting a couple of my close friends (boys). It was only about 10 years ago that any of this came to light, when all of the boys were older teenagers. Who is going to protect the children?! I have enormous admiration for everyone who appeared on the program, as they represent many other silent victims.

Hi Dustin, ((hugs)) to you. I know how you feel - I was shunned by my family for some time, including my two younger brothers who aren't even Witnesses! I'm lucky - I persisted in annoying them & now we are all a *happy* family again ... Good luck with yours!

I'm being sincere when I ask this question...
by misguided in.
have any of you had similar experiences while in the org where you've been made to feel (by the all-powerful, spirit-begotten know-all elders) like you're crazy, disbelieved, or like you somehow dreamt the whole thing up; when in reality you've really just stated the real truth of a situation?.

Yes, I got treated like that once when I had issues with my family. Basically, they are not trained counsellors & really don't know how to handle people.

How many days did you spend in the Hall?
by IP_SEC ini just did some rough (haha) figuring to determine how many days i spent just sitting at the hall during meetings.
i just rounded to the nearest year to be liberal in take into account missed meetings and the like.
i know the number is higher but i dont feel like getting more exact.. this just counts regular meeting times, not before and after fellowship, not fs, meeting prep, or assemblies.. i came up with 349 days.
