I never saw that movie, but if I am not mistaken, didn't that period have a whole genre of diaster movies, like the Towering Inferno and such? That time period (and then subsequently with nuclear disaster themed films) was quite perfect for the whole JW mentality.

If a Witness in 1974, how did "Earthquake" in "Sensaround" affect you?
by Wasanelder Once infor those who dont know, the movie "earthquake" was a huge film with big stars in 1974. it was mass destruction of watchtower armageddon proportions all presented in "sensaround".
the soundtrack was augmented by a low tone that affected a person's inner ear making it seem the seat was moving beneath them.
it was awesome.

Becoming "unevenly yoked" ?
by Blttex ini haven't been to a meeting in about a year, made up my mind about six months ago that jw's are just another religion and that its not for me.
started dating a "worldly" girl 10 months ago and got engaged this past weekend.
i'm having a hard time deciding who to invite to the wedding.

My August Update
by OnTheWayOut ini don't really have a purpose in this thread, but wanted to share my thoughts and updates.. fading has, at least for now, totally stabilized.
my jw wife doesn't discuss jw things and, as difficult for me as it is, i haven't been discussing anything directly against jw policy.
oh, i slip in comments when she tries to judge people or groups based on her jw training- things like gay marriage, medical marijuana, pedophile news stories.

OTWO,
OMG -- a festival in Boys Town in Chicago. I can imagine how crazy that must have been. You and your wife were surely overdressed for the occassion. LOL. Just kidding. But seriously, I've seen a couple of these festivals and they are crazy. I don't judge. If people want to walk around all naked and stuff and be all hedonistic, it's none of my business.
I wonder if your wife has confirmed through seeing the festival that the JW stereotypes of gay people are very real. Of course, there are usually some truths behind stereotypes. I just wonder if she knows that she's seeing a very small segment of the gay population -- those who live in Boys Town who attend festivals and walk around all naked-like.
I'm gay. I have three kids. I've never walked around naked or even half naked. I'm pretty prudish, even! For me, as a gay person, my life revolves around home, children and pets when I am not working. I wonder if people who see stereotypical examples understand that's just a segment and that it is not representative of everyone who is gay?
BTW OTWO this is an interesting thread! I am surprised your wife wanted to see what the festival was about. Just kind of wondering if she walked away from it with her JW thoughts reinforced.

Can the elders stop you from entering the kingdom hall if
by label licker inyou continue to talk to the witlesses after being disfellowshipped.
we were at a funeral recently and disfellowshipped hubby would talk to anyone who who would come up to him and talk.
he said he wasn't going to be rude and that the rule of not talking to df ones don't apply to him.

Label Licker,
I am well aware of the word and its meaning.
In your post, the way you used it, it's a slur. To try to twist it, and otherwise justify using the word while declaring that you, yourself as having disabled siblings doesn't give you any more credibility.
Here's a short NY Times article: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/03/opinion/sunday/a-word-gone-wrong.html for anyone who is interested.
I, too, have a sibling who is "mentally retarded." I can't imagine ever and I do mean ever using the word as a slur in the way that you did. If you do, indeed, have siblings who are mentally retarded, and you use the word as did in your post, I can only hope that you do not call your own siblings by that term.
After reading your reply, I find your use of the word even sadder. This is the lastl I have to say on this (no further posts on this topic by me after this one): I find it totally offensive and injustifiable that you would use the word retarded as you did.

Regarding the statement: " Let them be the ones who are acting retarded." I find that personally very offensive. Using the word retarded in this way makes me very sad.

Was the New World Bible Translation Committee pressed for time?
by I_love_Jeff in....when they did not include a translation of the hebrew scriptures in your special kingdom interlinear bible?
perhaps it is easier to manipulate the new testament to fit with their twisted jw teachings?.

It is interesting that they would take on such a long term project (among many others) with so little time left. I mean, the new system is basically here. It's right upon us. There is virtually no time left until the big A.

share your reaction after reading CoC and ISoCF
by suavojr inafter reading coc and isocf i cried, i was in shock, disillusioned, angry, and afraid... anyone wants to share their experience?.
i would like to see what you think about these questions when compared with your account.. why people from different backgrounds feel similar reactions?
(cannot be a conpiracy).

I read both books with great interest. I read them, however, long after leaving the Watchtower Corp. Even though it was years after leaving, I was completely glued to every page and chapter of CoC. I couldn't put it down. I was utterly captivated, and I read it in only about 3 sittings.

Topic About Psychological Gene (Hereditary) Patterns
by LV101 inanyone recall (tried to locate/failed) a very interesting topic within past 6 mos about latest research determining hereditary patterns in individuals but more than the usual that had been determined thru mental/brain studies previously - or something?

There was some interesting research that was reported on the genetic links to obesity. But the media are always reporting on links between the brain and behavior (and often do so poorly). There are thousands of studies published each year that relate to the field of neuroscience.

My daughter asks about the Bible
by laverite inmy 9 year old asked me yesterday about the bible.
some of her friends in school last year spent a lot of time talking about hell and it really scared her.
i dealt with it with her, so she is reassured and comforted and realizes she doesn't need to worry about going to hell.

My 9 year old asked me yesterday about the Bible. Some of her friends in school last year spent a lot of time talking about Hell and it really scared her. I dealt with it with her, so she is reassured and comforted and realizes she doesn't need to worry about going to Hell. But interestingly, these kids also talk about having Bibles at home and reading the Bible. We don't have a Bible anywhere in our house. So she asked about why that is and if could get one to read.
All I could do was answer her honestly, and say that I didn't think it was a book that would appropriate for little kids to read. She asked why, and I said there are so many bad things in the Bible that are very frightening, especially for children. I let her know that there are things just too inappropriate for kids to read, and that I wasn't going to buy one.
She said "ok" and left it at that. She comes up with lots of questions out of the blue that I never anticipate ahead of time!

I had to control my laughter...
by ILoveTTATT intoday at the meeting, during the prayer (to which i did not say "amen" to) the brother said "thank you for everything the faithful and discreet slave do for us.
we know it is because they love us...".
to which i had to really control my laughter cause i was about to burst out laughing... i just smiled, thankfully everyone else had their eyes closed and head down.... .

Wouldn't it be funny for someone to start busting out laughing when something so ridiculous is said in a talk or a prayer? I'd pay to see that.
