I came to JWN hoping to find some old friends who'd been Df'd. On my first posting thread I knew some in common with Besty (not sure who he doesn't know). It made a difference to me to know that there are people I've met on here. I'm always on the lookout for people/places that I know - although would need to be pretty confident of their status as I won't risk outing myself.

how bad is the economy?
the economy is so bad that....... i got a pre-declined credit card in the mail.. african television stations are now showing 'sponsor an american child' commercials.. .
wives are having sex with their husbands because they can't afford batteries.. ceo's are now playing miniature golf.. .
to save money "New light" will be run from solar energy
the retirement age for the GB will be extended indefinately to save on pension costs
the WTS printing presses will cease and every dub will have to download and print their own magazines causing divisions between the more spiritual "publisher printouts" and less spiritual "inactive iPads".
on memorial night a picture of the wine & bread will be passed around the room, whilst the money saved will be donated to the WTS GB healthcare fund.

Depends on the kid. I have a nephew who challenges my thoughts, is fun to be with and a great laugh. I have another nephew, just a bit younger, who challenges me even more as he's a bully, nasty, thick and a JW which is embarrassing for the Borg. My comments on both of these children are understated.
I like children and children like me. Animals like me too although I'm not sure that's connected.

i was reading some education-related threads on here and i'm curious about something.
i haven't been out too long, and while i was in, i was farsighted enough to get my college degree part-time at night.
i kind of knew i'd be out someday and would need it... anyway, since i've been out, i've been going to law school.
It's frowned upon but I know of several JW's who have studied law, either through Uni or as adults. All were considered ok but had to justify their actions and suffer snide remarks at meetings. Remember plenty of dubs work full time so it's a bit easier to justify switching to full time education if you still do the same FS and go to meetings and depending on how popular you are.
Come to think of it one of the sisters was married to a loser JW, got a scriptural divorce and then did her law degree. She had been pioneering most of her life, was quite stunning and intelligent so I think some local elders supported her (likely in the desperate hope she'd fall for one of them eventually - they were disappointed - she married an elder overseas).
I know that when you're no longer in it, there are so many actions taken by JW's that are hypocritical. She may well be spiritual or it could be part of her plan to fade - I guess approach with caution.

i finished my 5 day ride on friday to help raise funds for the ms society.
i had an absolutely great time.

per a recent letter to elders:.
beginning september 1, there will be a change to the way attendance is recorded at congregation meetings.. currently, attendance is counted at 4 of the 5 meeting (public talk, wt study, congregation "bible" study, and service meeting).. but after sept. 1, meeting attendance will only be taken at 2 of the meetings - during the "first quarter" of the wt study, and also at the cbs.. .
no reason in given for the change in the letter, and i can't figure out why myself.. the numbers are not published anywhere - the only "official" record is a 6 month average the co puts together during his visit.. why request less information from the congregations, especially when it "costs" nothing to accumulate it in the first place?
Great theories and experience makes it hard to fault them. I think they're just trying to make everything as simple as possible. So much time and effort goes into these waste of time activities when people are leaving through the back door by droves.
They'll of course mention how much easier they're making the lives of brothers - just before they make them collect the magazines from the assembly halls.

How are they going to rally the R&F to do more on those 2 weeks a year? Previously they'd pretend to be uber-spiritual and all turn up on FS and at meetings - that'll change immediately.
How will the R&F ever know who's going to be appointed next if they're not giving talks during the CO visits.
How will sisters ever be considered for special honour if they can't make a meal for the CO & his wife or take the CO's wife on their studies? Or how will those young teenagers not be encouraged to reach out by being allowed to do the microphone duty on the CO visit?
How will shepherding ever get done if the threat of a CO visit doesn't strike fear into the heart of every elder to actually do their assigned duties?
