@Pams girl, there is far more honesty and genuine care, thought and expression on this website than there is in the Jehovah's Witnesses. This website has a few dogmatic pains in the butt as well, but that's just life. My wife and I were fortunate enough to stumble on to another couple who were ex-JWs ... and then another, and then another and we often meet up to share our thoughts and common experiences ... and just vent. It has made a huge difference in reclaiming our lives. I'm so very glad you found us here.

Question for those converted to JW as adults
by DaleRivers inwhy did you become a jw, what particular teachings attracted you to 'the truth' ?.
.
in my case (baptized at 20/21) it was the only religion i knew; my mom, her mom, and favorite sister were jw; and the teachings of no hellfire or immortal soul made sense to me.. .

I was raised as an Anglican but stopped attending sunday school and church when I was about 10, but still believed in God. Around 28 years old I began to wonder if you could find the real God if you looked closely at Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism etc and bought a book called What Man Believes that examined all the major religions. JWs came to my door and raised the prospect of living forever -- it seemed reasonable that that was God's original purpose. I swallowed the selective scriptures the JWs provided.
It was 1985 and I was scared of nuclear war and I was reassured by the JWs' claim that God would never allow man to destroy the earth. I was also greatly persuaded by the "fact" that only JWs used "God's name" and that they alone were sharing the "good news".
Yup, I swallowed the lot. It was only later, reading books by Ray Franz and others, that I realised how easily those seemingly rock-solid reasonings could be refuted, or at least challenged with equally convincing arguments. Which is why, of course, the JWs warned (and still warn) against reading writings of "apostates": they want their people to hear only one side of the argument.

Cheaters: Camera crews secretly follow pioneers wasting time while claiming to be "in the work", then bust in on them in a coffee shop to confront them with the evidence.
Truth or Travesty: Panel game in which players are presented with a selection of outrageous statements "that may be" from old Watchtowers, Awakes and WTS books. Can they spot the fake ones among the real ones?

You Be the Judge
Live judicial committee hearing. Audience gets to vote on what "Jehovah's judgment" is: Keep, expel or counsel.
This Wicked World
Wrap-up of the day's news from around the world, featuring only wars, earthquakes, diseases and demonic attacks. Anchors sign off with "And, sadly, that's the way it was today. We'll be back tomorrow ... if Armageddon doesn't come first."

Ray Franz was a GB member, so he was a "cop" too. He was a good cop who quit when he realised the force was corrupt and that the good cops never win.

JWs in general are poor listeners. At the doors they "listen" to the householder only to detect verbal cues to respond with their "truth". They just don't give a s**t about anyone's opinions.

Harsh, Oubliette. Raymond Franz was much the same as most sincere JWs, believing the lie, doing what he thought was best, and doing what he could to lighten people's burdens until he discovered it was all a lie. He deceived the R&F, but no more than I did in conducting bible studies with people I met at the door or giving meeting assignments.

Everyone asked to take their literature back to the KH?
by MrMonroe inmay be bullshit or just confusion, but here's a post at a facebook ex-jw page:.
"so last night i performed one of my occasional meeting attendances, and whilst watching the kids and planning my exit strategy in the event of a walking dead style zombie outbreak, i think i heard them read a letter saying that the brothers are now to destroy all old literature in their possession if it's in bad condition, or return it to the elders if it's in good condition, but you can no longer keep any old literature... hmmm".
anyone know anything about this letter?

Not really a big fan of Dolly Parton, but "In the Meantime" kinda nails it ...
You know people been talking about the end of time ever since time began
We've been living in the last days ever since the first day ever since the dawn of Man
Well nobody knows when the end is coming but some people tell you they do
Well it might be today, it might be tomorrow, or in a million years or two...
In the meantime, in between time, let us make time to make it right
And let us not fear what is not clear; faith should be your guide, just follow this advice..
And...
Think about love; Think about living
Think about love sharing and giving
Drop the Doomsday attitude and let the spirit flow
These are wonderful times we're living in
God still walks in the hearts of Men
And Eden's garden waves within so let the flowers grow
Well we rant and we rave about the "good ol' days" and how different it was "back then"
Well the greatest days we've ever known are the days we're living in
Well we worry about earthquakes, aliens from outer space, nuclear holocaust
Well we're so consumed with the fear of dying; the joy of living is lost
In the meantime, in between time, let us make time to make amends
Lead the good life, just treat this planet right and try to all be friends and say with me again..
Ohhh...!
Think about life; Think about living
Think about love - caring and giving
Drop this Doomsday attitude and get on with the show
We've walked on the moon; been to Mars
Technically we've come so far
But still we wonder who we are
The farther along we go
(Doodle-doodle doo-doo-doo... ooh-ooh)
You know people been talking about the end of time ever since time began
We've been living in the last days ever since the first day ever since the dawn of Man
Well nobody knows when the end is coming—well that's what the Scriptures say
But that's a secret known only to God, he says to just watch and pray
In the meantime, what's the hurry?
In the meantime now don't you worry
In the meantime live, laugh- be merry
In the meantime, in the meantime
In the meantime troubles gonna show us
In the meantime the sky is still above us
In the meantime you know God's gonna love us
In the meantime, in the meantime, in the meantime...
