  while participating on this website (one of the only three places i've discussed religion online) i asked a question:.

  i've observed quite a few posts and comments here about religious intolerance toward gay men and women (i'm quoting), the terror and murder of homosexuals instigated by christians.

  the religion i was raised in was in agreement with the bible based view that alternative lifestyles are immoral but they never instigated any hateful rhetoric toward gay men or women.

  I still think its a possibility. If we accept that homosexuality is primarily a matter of genes and development rather than choice, then the little we know about Paul would not be inconsistent with a devout gay man struggling against urges he believed to be sinful.

  Its purely speculation but worthy consideration

  The pope has a formidable foe in Hitchens

  Words cannot describe how much contempt I feel for the whole hierarchy of the church. I can't imagine our government having the balls to indict him when he comes here this autumn. How anybody can be part of that disgusting organisation is beyond me.

  Apologies are not nearly enough - the people responsible and those who covered it up need to be put on trial.

  I wonder whether Paul was gay? I'm not being sarcastic - unusually he was a single Jewish teacher, he had nothing good to say about women or marriage, he ranted about homosexuality and (pure speculation coming now....) had something that bothered him deeply which he pleaded with god to take away from him. Was is latent homosexuality?

  It's an exceptional book. Its Dawkins at his best, not getting angry about theism but explaining the beautiful elegance of natural selection. If you want an antidote to the all the facile creationist arguments you have ever heard this is it.

  It doesn't deal with "how we got here", but it explains and illustrates how the variety of life arose from simple beginnings. At the heart of all creationist objections to evolution is the idea of "complexity"; this book deals with that directly.

  While the squad are in South Africa Capello will no doubt make sure that they are focussed on training and matches when they need to be and spend time with wives and girlfriends when it does not interfere with their job.

  Like you say they are grown men and Capello is no fool.

  There are sections of the media where journalists know nothing about the game but they still have column inches to fill about the world cup. May I suggest the BBC website of Guardian online for actual football news updates during the finals - can't wait
