The newspaper and magazine industry has always been a cutthroat business - even in the world of Jehovah's Witness publications. Charles Taze Russell began what is now known as The Watchtower publication in 1879 for use in the door-to-door ministry by the Jehovah's Witnesses. They were unchallenged until 1889 when a new, radical door-to-door publication entered the marketplace.
In addition to writing for the Watchtower, Charles Taze Russell wrote the
hit-song "Knockin' On Heaven's Door."A young journalist named David McStevens founded "The Loincloth: Exposing Christianity" in 1889 and immediately threatened the Watchtower's door-to-door dominance. Within the first year, Watchtower's circulation dipped down by 35 percent. Readership for the Loincloth increased even more when they began to give away tickets for the 144,000 available seats in heaven with crossword puzzle contests.
McStevens and Russell became embroiled in a heated battle; McStevens claimed Russell was buying some of the tickets to heaven and not coming by them the honest way - earning them or winning them. Russell did not deny the charges and then scalped 100 heaven seating tickets for a total of $2.3 million dollars.
With a little extra cash on hand, Russell increased the production and dissemination of his Watchtower literature. By 1910 McStevens had all but disappeared from the big picture. According to Witness Micah Onas's annual list in 1911, the Fortunate 144,000, David McStevens had slipped in the rankings all the way from #58 to #143, 820 - putting his eternal existence in jeopardy. Charles Russell held steady at #3 behind Jesus and Booker T. Washington.

Freemasonry and Jehovah's Witnesses
by Hammer_Of_Thor ini've read alot of posts here regarding jw's and freemasonry, and so far i've seen the usual conjecture by non-masons, and a few well written opinions of the inquiring minds among us.. i'm a former jw from texas, and a current freemason in houston.
my question is:.
what specifically does the wts say as far as masonic membership.

Does anyone know if Barbara Anderson called/wrote to the Freemason office in Pennsylvania and they checked their records and said their membership shows no evidence that Charles Taze Russell or his father were members? j/k

What Did You Expect to Do During the 1,000 Years?
by Ding infor those who were jws, what did you expect to do during the 1,000 year reign?.
since only loyal jws would survive armageddon, it seemed to me that field service and tms would be eliminated.. so what did you expect to do with your time, besides getting rid of the dead bodies and petting lions?.

Al Capone vs. Judge Rutherford
by Farkel inye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith alone...for as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also" - james 2: 24, 26
al capone vs. judge rutherford
al capone gained his power by exploiting the weaknesses of people.. judge rutherford gained his power by exploiting the weaknesses of people.

Rutherford was no angel, but he was incarcerated unfairly and unconstitutionally for his beliefs and actions.
Unfairly? Unconstitutionally? Anyone who believes this should read the court transcript.

Rutherford admits why he stole control of WTB&TS
by Mythbuster ini've been reading the trial transcript and i found this little nugget (page 1028).
this comes while the prosecution is questioning rutherford:.
q. that being your view of it - that a man who was consecrated must not engage in war, then, that is your idea, that you are opposed to all war?.

I found the entire transcript fascinating reading.
The judge was far and above fair in dealing with the defendants. It was interesting to see the defendants and witnesses for the society try to answer but not answer the questions put to them. Seems that "I don't remember" was considered to be an adequate defense for the crew. This tactic resulted in one witness being held in contempt because the witness kept insisting in 1 and a half years of working within 10 feet of MacMillan that he had never seen him in the act of writing though they worked in the same office. The judge had had enough by the time this witness tried to pull the "I don't remember" card, the third witness to do such.
Defense attorney Sparks was a real piece of work and I don't know, had I been the judge, that I would have been as patient as the trial judge was.
The trial judge had this to say at the end of the trial:
The Court: At the conclusion of this trial, the Court desires to express its appreciation to counsel, except Mr. Sparks, for the dignified and lawyerlike manner in which they tried the case, to the clerk and his deputies and the marshall and his deputies, for their many courtesies during the trial.

Anyone can sue anyone for anything. Making it stick is the trick. Don't lie and it won't be slander. There's enough bad truth out there for them to bury themselves.
