Are You Still attending Meetings? If so read on.......
by cantleave inok - i couldn't keep away from this board - but i lasted longer than a week (outlaw!).
here i am sitting in the sun on a beautiful sunday afternoon drinking beer catching up with the posts on this board.
i just had to write a message to anyone still attending meetings, despite knowing that they are a forum to propagate lies and deceit.

Circ. Ass. Last Weekend...oh boy!
by tresdecu inso i had to suffer through the ca last weekend, it was rough at 1st, i was actually sick to my stomach the night before, fortunately my little boy kept me occupied during the session and i got to walk around a lot.. the do cracked down on 'true christians' watching vampire movies aka....twilight.
i know this series is hugely popular with a lot of teens and 20somthings, even a young elder and his wife (mostly the wife) are really into them.. he said true christians just don't watch such things.
haha.

I can see the reasoning behind slowly fading, or going for the sake of family. For me, cold turkey was it. Once I stopped there was no going back. It hasn't been easy - there are some family members who do a good job of combining emotional instability with religious fervor to make us miserable on occasion. But that is fading as time goes by.
Less stress, a happier family, and the freedom that comes with being one's authentic self full-time are all things that make cold-turkey worth it for me.

The Borg is also funny because of the WT's focus on the Organization. Org = BOrg.

Atheism is NOT a Faith...
by zeroday* in**disclaimer** i'm an atheist.... atheism is not a faith, it is not a religion, it is not a belief system...what do atheist and believers have in common...nothing.
so why do atheist seem it necessary to argue, fight and debate believers.
what is to be gained, a new nonbeliever...i have never understood it.

they're like jw's - their agenda is to destroy other people's beliefs
Freydo, I strongly disagree with the generalization that both you and zeroday* have made. Of course there are some "militant" atheists, just as there are some "militant" theists.
But in my experience, atheists generally do not go out of their way to pick a fight with theists. However, sometimes atheists and even moderate religious folks feel the need to speak up - the example that HintofLime gave would be one of those times. When others' religious beliefs interfere with the education of my children, for example, I feel the need to speak up.
It is not a matter of wanting to destroy someone else's faith. As a former JW, I am no longer in that dirty business. But I have every right to assert myself and my beliefs- when education, knowledge, and progress for our society begin to give way to religious fundamentalism.

sticking our heads in the sand either by declaring our disbelief in anything
I'm not sure that a lack of belief in a claim, due to insufficient evidence, can be called sticking one's head in the sand. The burden of proof lies with those who claim that god or gods exist, and then go further and claim to know exactly who those gods are, what they are thinking, and what I should believe, or else.
If one examines these claims and finds insufficient evidence to believe them, is he being intellectually dishonest? Is he "sticking his head in the sand"?
Quote the Bible, quote the Koran, quote the book of Mormon, quote a scientist who believes in god, quote my cousin Vinny. All claims need evidence to back them up, regardless of the source. As an atheist and a human being I reserve the right to examine the claims and the evidence. I am not opposed to the possibility of the existence of any god. I will not dogmatically stick to a stance because it is what I 'want' to believe. But so far the evidence that I have examined has not led me to belief in god. It's not faith. It's not a stance.
It's living with eyes wide open.

Finish the job the Jehovah's Witnesses started on you!
by Terry inwhat jehovah's witnesses get right is that the basis for christianity rests on scripture and the bible itself.. but, they only go just so far.
they stop at making you suspicious of bad things which have crept in to the bible through centuries of corruption.. the jw's unpack and deconstruct christianity j-u-s-t e-n-o-u-g-h for you to see the rats and spiders and cockroaches.
they quickly squeeze it all back together again repackaged.

In the early stages of my mental exit, I was stuck in the false dilemma, "If JWs don't have the truth, then no one does!" You're right, Terry - they pick at other versions of Christianity, exposing some ugly bits, and then quickly force the conclusion that THIS must be the truth, since those others are wrong. It's a part of creating a phobia of the outside world - everything that is outside is false, dark, ugly. And pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!
After lots of study, including reading ISoCF and looking at JWFacts.com, I realized that the Witnesses didn't have the Christianity thing right, either. So I dug and dug and dug, eventually realizing that no Christians have Christianity right, because there is no "right" Christianity.
Why? Because it is either based on traditions of men, or it is based on the bible- which is also traditions of men; or a little of both.
The job is finished.
