Moscow officials to evict Jehovah's Witnesses from Moscow estate
by Mythbuster inhttp://en.rian.ru/russia/20100203/157764392.html.
officials plan to evict a branch of the jehovah's witnesses from an 18th century estate in northern moscow, the prefect of moscow's northern district, oleg mitvol, said on wednesday.. mitvol claimed the mikhalkovo estate with nearly 100 hectares was illegally privatized by a moscow cotton factory and later sold to the jehovah's witnesses.
the estate is estimated to be worth $350 million.. "we have been receiving continual complaints from veterans that the historic building on mikhalkovskaya street currently houses a branch of the jehovah's witnesses," he added.. russia considers jehovah's witnesses a religious sect and its activities therefore illegal.

I agree with BTS on this. While I have no use for the WT, the heavy-handed tactics of the Russian government are too much like the bad old days "back in the USSR". If freedom doesn't apply to everybody, even (especially!) those who abuse it, then nobody is really free.

Along the lines of what Flipper and Ziddina said, concentrate on how WT policies affect relationships among family and friends and the cooercive, un-loving tactics they employ to control the members and the members families. Don't make their predictions about "opposers" come true, continue to be the good and loving father to your son. Arguing over doctrine is dead end in several ways: not only are you unlikely to convince him, but you're also expending the good will you've built up over the years. Family ties are more imprtant than doctrine. That's why I suggest not following the WT script: instead of resistance, offer unconditional love.
I hope it gets better for you.

A WAR you never heard about: judge for yourselves THE TRUE STORY
by Terry inwhen jehovah's witnesses began distributing door to door the new world translation beginning in the early 1950's a firestorm of protest broke out in mainstream churches.
the alarm cry was "they've changed the bible to fit their own crooked teachings!".
you can imagine the discord as church members tried to figure out how jehovah's witnesses could prove by reading from the nwt the king james version was full of ommissions and errors and outright fraud concerning, for instance, the trinity doctrine or the name of god!!.

Interesting thread! Here is another bit of this history.
Only the NT was translated by the Watchtower in the 1950s. Wikipedia says the complete NWT was not published until 1961. (Maybe Outlaw isn't quite as old as we thought!)
The NWT was translated at approximately the same time as the RCC project leading to the Jerusalem Bible. Knorr proposed a new translation in 1946, three years after pope Pius XII wrote Divino Afflante Spiritu encouraging translations of the Bible from original languages rather than the Vulgate Latin version.
Both the complete NWT and the first (French) version of the Jerusalem Bible were published in 1961. Consistent with the theme of this war, two groups claimed to do the same thing (translate the Bible from the oldest extant sources), and each produced results consistent with their theology.

Another marriage bites the dust thanks to the WT
by boyzone ini've known about this couple for a long time and attended their bible studies on occasions.
susan, the wife, has been having a study with the witnesses on and off for 16 years, (yeah i know, one of very useful wet day pioneer calls where we all bundle round sue's house for coffee and still count the time) the sister whose been studying with them was a sooper -uber pioneer sister with a hard-line and total society view on everything.
sue's husband keith has always been polite and interested in what his wife was learning but he loved his beer, fags and christmas too much to take it seriously.. finally a few months ago susan caves in to the pressure from uber-sister christine and wants to get baptized.

They keep printing success stories in their magazines to prove that they're not
The organization doth protest too much! When they print stories like that, there is a reason for it. If members weren't these issues, the WT wouldn't feel compelled to deny there's a problem.
== edited to add: ==
Of course I heard it from the JW viewpoint which was that he being an RC was a spritual endangerment to her!
Of course, it never occurs to them that her being JW might be spiritually endangering to him!

Keep the videos coming, Tim! They're always great to watch and to the point. Except to the WT and their faithful, who just can't seem to laugh at themselves.

A Thought on DFing: Shafting the Hounders
by Farkel inthe wts has repeatedly stated that one of the main reasons for disfellowshiping is to "keep the congregation clean.
" another reason is to shame the offender into toeing the wt party line, although they don't quite put it that way.. on the other hand, there are numerous examples of elder hounders hunting down and dfing people who have totally and voluntarily extricated themselves from the "congregation" and its members for years.
obviously, they aren't bothering the congregation(s) or active dubs at all, and obviously they aren't interested into being "shamed" in order to get back in.. one can only conclude that the motives of the elder hounders are vindictive.

Hoggieman: I am no lawyer, but if the law in your state is similar to ours your elders are on shaky ground. After you told them "I don't want to talk with you!" they should stop calling. If they harsass you because they think you changed religions, that may be an aggravating factor (a "hate crime" situation).
Realistically, I doubt the police or the courts would want to be involved (they really do have more important things to deal with). But I suggest it would be worthwhile to become familiar with the local laws regarding harassment, disorderly conduct, stalking, slander, etc. and "read them the riot act" the next time they contact you. If nothing else, be aware of the law so that you know which lines are not to be crossed.
(1) A person commits harassment if, with intent to harass, annoy, or alarm another person, he or she:
...
(e) Initiates communication with a person, anonymously or otherwise, by telephone, telephone network, data network, text message, instant message, computer, computer network, or computer system in a manner intended to harass or threaten bodily injury or property damage, or makes any comment, request, suggestion, or proposal by telephone, computer, computer network, or computer system that is obscene; or
...
(g) Makes repeated communications at inconvenient hours that invade the privacy of another and interfere in the use and enjoyment of another's home or private residence or other private property; or
....
(2) Harassment pursuant to subsection (1) of this section is a class 3 misdemeanor; except that harassment is a class 1 misdemeanor if the offender commits harassment pursuant to subsection (1) of this section with the intent to intimidate or harass another person because of that person's actual or perceived race, color, religion, ancestry, or national origin [edits and emphasis are mine]BTW, this is a good reason to not tie up KH phone conference line, or show up at the Hall, or argue with the elders, or otherwise "act out" your feelings. They could make the same claims against you, saying you're harassing them. They didn't get involved in so many 1st Ammendment cases by turning the other cheek!

This thread isn't complete without noting the polytheism the WT wrote into the NWT. YHWH is God, "the Word was a god". Two beings identified as deities, but they deny the trinity. There it is, polytheism in the NWT mistranslation of John 1:1.

by Elsewhere inthere is a new scam going around with a company called steorn that is claiming to have invented a "free energy" device called orbo.. they've been working on it for six years, yet all they have to show for their work is a little plastic motor that is powered by a battery.
(yeah, how is it free energy if they are using a battery?
i made my own youtube video response to all of the orbo believers.

Jehovah's Witnesses and Calvinistic Predestination
by AllTimeJeff inthis is a complex question, and i just want to get a discussion started on the message of jehovah's witnesses and how it relates to their adventist roots, and esp calvinism.. bear with me, i will try to be concise.. we all know that while jehovah's witnesses like to deny adventist roots, that it is clear that according to them, the man jesus selected to get the whole thing started, c t russell, was heavily influenced by adventist ideas, esp the (adventist) idea that has really never left them; the idea that somehow, a time date or period can be inferred from the bible if you read certain scriptures through an adventist lens.
(thus, the 2520 years, 7 gentile times, etc.).
so while this is relatively well known, there is a concept that jehovah's witnesses teach against, yet practice.

@leec
I don't recall this concept as part of any religious teaching. Is Catholicism unique among Christian religions in this way, or am I just not remembering or putting things together correctly?
I'm paraphrasing and may over-simply, but the RCC doctrine on predestination that I was taught has these basic premises:
- God gave you free will, to pursue a sinful life or a virtuous one
- God doesn't make that choice for you, it's your responsibility
- God sees what is in your heart and knows what your choice will be
- If you end up in Hell, don't blame God: it was your decision!
