Questions about god's name
by Jankyn ini have a couple of questions for the research-bunnies on the board--there are so many of you who've spent so much time studying both the bible and jw beliefs, and it's an incredible resource for the rest of us.
i used to know the jw line on some of this stuff, but since i left in my late teens and am now moving into middle age, i've forgotten a lot.. first, i know that the nwt inserts "jehovah" every time the old testament uses the tetragrammaton (yhwh).
my question is, what is the basis/claim they make for inserting "jehovah" into the new testament?

50th anniversary of my mother's cult induction
by Jankyn inthis week marks the 50th anniversary of my mother's baptism as one of jehovah's witnesses.
she and a childhood friend, who was baptized at the same assembly, will be having a "get-together" this weekend to celebrate.
(hmmm...wonder if that doesn't tread too close to "glorifying the individual"?

Great new book
by Jankyn ini just finished reading leaving the saints: how i lost the mormons and found my faith by martha beck.
beck is a regular columnist for o magazine (oprah's mag).
the book details how she survived sexual abuse in her home (at the hands of her father, a big-shot mormon scholar), and how she eventually left the mormon church.

Celebrating my birthday...
by Jankyn inhi, all.. i celebrated (yes, indeedy, right down to cake and singing) my 45th birthday on saturday, and i learned a few things in the process.. my partner, who is appalled that i never had a birthday party or presents as a child, decided to make my birthday a week-long celebration.
each day, i had another gift--little things that she knew i'd like, like a box of almond roca, a little plastic moose (i love moose-s), and a book about natural ways to get the slugs out of my garden.
and each day, she made up a little poem about how glad she was that i was born.

Sacto area abuse cases, reporter need contacts
by Jankyn ini recently talked to a reporter for the sacramento news & review.
those of you in this area probably know about this alternative newsweekly, which does in-depth stories, sometimes on topics that the daily won't touch.
i spoke with her about the recent sexual abuse lawsuits filed--as far as i know, there have been victims in woodland and in red bluff, but none from sacto.

New novel with major JW themes
by Jankyn infor those who might be interested: i recently read an advance review copy of a new novel, by way of water, by charlotte gullick (blue hen press, 2002).
pretty good first novel, i'd say, but the most interesting thing for me was that the characters' involvement with jehovah's witnesses was a main theme for the novel, and not merely a minor plot point.. set in northern california in 1977 and told through the eyes of 7-year-old justy, the novel tells the story of the unravelling of a family because of the violence and alcoholism of the father and the alienation that the mother's involvement in jws causes.
it's also fairly accurate about the religion--only big gaffe i caught was singing from a brown songbook, when in 1977 we were all using the old mauve singing and accompanying yourselves with music in your hearts..
