The "sister in the back" was his new wife!
Wow.. that is bad. Well, no reason putting off your first night sleeping on the sofa, I guess.

i was thinking the other day about a potential answer to the frequent party question 'what was your most embarrassing moment?'.
immediately my mind went to my last experience on the theocratic school.
as an aspiring ms, i volunteered at the last minute to give a #4 talk on a particular individual (ignorant of what i was about to get myself into).

i would really love to take my family (including a couple of small kids...and maybe the dog) on a road trip to the colorado rockies in late summer.
i'd like to spend at least a week out there.
any ideas on places with some good scenery, activities, places to stay (a cabin would be cool).. i haven't been out there before, and i don't know if i want to just stay in one area or make some sort of "grand circuit".
Black Canyon of the Gunnison is cool (west), Sand Dunes National Monument(south) is interesting, and like others said before... Canon City (Royal Gorge), Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs (I live within 5 miles of it! Neener neener!) and Rocky Mountain National Park (north) are all great.
I'm less familiar with the west, but Durango and Ouray (on the west side) are both really pretty. Southwestern Colorado (Mesa Verde) tends to be more interesting than northwestern (Dinosaur National Monument) in my opinion, but it depends on your interests. If you want to huff and puff, feel nauseated and want to pass out, you can drive to the top of Pikes Peak (The view at Will Rodgers Shrine in the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is similar, in my opinion, but without the sickly effects).
For non-national-park attractions, there is The Denver Museum of Natural History, the awesome Denver Aquarium, and both the zoos in Colorado Springs (Cheyenne Mountain) and Denver have their strengths, and there is a little bug museum (The Mays Field Museum) between Canon City and Colorado Springs (just look for the giant bug on the west side of HW 115 as you get close to the Springs).

PS: I still hate this forum software.

Immediately my mind went to my last experience on the theocratic school. As an aspiring MS, I volunteered at the last minute to give a #4 talk on a particular individual (ignorant of what I was about to get myself into). I forget the exact biblical character, but after volunteering (30 minutes to go...) I stepped into the KH library and began my research. The insight book immediately illustrated the quandary I had stepped into. It had a whopping 2 sentences about that particular character. And they were NOT noteworthy or interesting in the least (Along the lines of "So-and-so was the half-brother of so-and-so.. a priest). I read the 2 associated scriptures that mentioned the person by name, came up with no practical experience or illustration to use the account with, and started to realized.. I am completely screwed. An elder visited me 5 minutes before my talk to ask how it was going, and I complained that there was NOTHING to say about this individual, and was comforted with "You'll find something."
Well, I didn't. I was on the platform for about 45 seconds... I couldn't figure out how to correctly pronounce this particularly character's name consistently, and I had nothing to say about him. It was the most humiliating and ultimately pointless thing I can recall ever being asked of me. The School Overseer publically criticized my delivery as "insufficient"... even on an impromptu talk (freaking jack-ass).. but didn't offer any additional insights into the character, and the school ended early. It was the last time I stepped onto the platform for a talk. After that, I only did the announcements and the occasional formulaic prayer ("Please forgive us where we fall short, because we are imperfect, and do make mistakes.", and all the 'important' things you heard quoted verbatim over and over.)
How about you, anybody else have any traumatic experiences on the platform to spill?

PS: I have had the chance to speak publically since then.. and fortunately that negative experience hasn't prevented me sharing important and useful information I have an interest in. I think when it comes to most people, when you are interested and enthusiastic about a particular subject, it's not so big a deal to share what you know with most crowds, from just a couple friends to a large gathering. It's just hard to bullshit about worthless crap in front of 1 or 1,000,000 people for most of us.
I remember my ex and I bought the game "Morrowind" 3 times in all.. We'd buy it, play it a ways, have a ton of fun, and then run into something 'demonic'.. and have to throw it away.
Then a few weeks later, the craving would set in, and we'd decide "Well, the game is huge, we'll just not go into any more tombs with ghosts in them". A few days later, we'd run into a Dwarvin ruin with vampires in it.. and throw it away.
Eventually we lost interest in JW crap, and just bought the game and enjoyed it. It's only 1's and 0's on an optical disk, creating a bunch of triangles/pixels to be rendered via your video card. Looking back, it was pretty stupid. If I downloaded the game online, do the demons follow the 1's and 0's through the internet, across routers, optic fibers, and telephone wires to your house?
Sheesh, the "spooky" places aren't even spooky when you realize the area is clumsily designed, and the 'demonic monsters' get hung up on doors and walls just like every other dumb AI in a game.

here's a tip for all you 27+ year-old single guys out there.. if it's late one saturday night, and you get the idea "hey!
it's saturday night!
i'm going to have me a drink!
Seriously, I did learn an important lesson one night regarding the baking of 'tater tots' without a shirt on. I pulled the baking sheet out of the oven a little too quick, and the small scar next to my belly button is just now starting to fade.
Kinda stupid, I know (now).

If it's late one saturday night, and you get the idea "Hey! It's saturday night! I'm going to have me a drink!" And then you follow that idea up with "Hey! I'm drunk, it's saturday night, I'm gonna take off all my clothes!"... and then you continue that line of reasoning with "Hey! I'm drunk and naked, it's saturday night, I'm gonna cook me up some bacon!"
Well, for the love of god or darwin or whatever holy is... PUT SOME PANTS ON BEFORE YOU COOK UP A HOT SKILLET OF SPLATTERING BACON GREASE!!!
Just a tip. Nothing to do with any personal experience.

PS: Laugh. :P
michael jackson has been quoted as having no friends.
some here would like to blame his jw upbringing.. being a exjw, do you have trouble making and/or keeping friends?.
philip.
Being a JW hasn't effected my ability to make friends at all.
I have made friends with at least 6 of the mysterious voices in my head, and have estabilished a very honest and trusting relationship with at least two of them. Oh my, yes. Two are best friends forever. One of them gave me her telephone number a couple nights ago. Eh-heh-heh-heh! (We need a Meg Griffin Emoticon)

i found a website that is full of lawsuits involving jw's!!
talk about sue-happy people!!.
it's very interesting reading!!.
In August 1985, a "dirty little secret" which Jehovah's Witnesses had been able to keep quiet for decades was exposed to the rest of the world by an article published in MEDICAL ECONOMICS magazine. The article was written by an obstetrician practicing in Plano, Texas.
I read that one as well which makes JW's such a quandary. Damned if you do hire them (they don't obey laws), damned if you don't (religious descrimination).
The story of the pregant girl who was denied maternity leave and fired from a grocery store employing 60% JW's is likewise disgusting. Put a pregnant mother out on the streets without income with the excuse she would 'strain staff resources' ... Meanwhile, the same manager is granting 'pioneer leave' to the other JW's. Yeah, I'm sure Jesus would have handled it that way.

a couple of topics recently have made me think.
first, there was snowbird's "i think i am getting old" and the news that farrah fawcett has died at the relatively young age of 62.. also, the economic down turn has started older people wondering if retirement as we used to know it will be a thing of the past.
i am 56 years old but somehow never see myself retiring in the traditional sense of the word.. i am beginning to think that we are beginning to the time when older people will become more and more ambitious.
eyeslice: I say we are all young until we decide we are ready to die. Go for it!

Funny, I was talking with my dad, who is about to retire, and I can't see myself retiring at 65 - let alone 60 like him. I'm only 30, and I'm just now getting started! Heck, I'm thinking of going to collage and getting a neuroscience phd. I hope to keep going strong well into my 60's, and maybe retire at 70 at least. We live longer nowdays. Why retire at 65 when it is so young by today's standards?
