I hear ya on that one cappy. I debate with myself about 'coming out' publicly. I don't want to become an ISIS target. And I don't want it to adversely affect my career. I'm pretty sure my current boss is Catholic.
what is the wackiest...strangest....most unusual jw teaching or practice?
In my opinion, the wackiest belief is that they are God's Chosen and are the one True Religion.
If you can destroy this foundational belief with a JW, the entire house of cards follows.

it just seems to me religion in general primarily makes truly bad people worse, not genuinly good people better; and in many cases has even made good people do bad things in the name of their religion.
just curious, a personal poll if you will.

I have come to realize that God is a figment of the human imagination and nothing more. I much prefer the pursuit of truth through a mechanism that doesn't threaten to punish me if I don't believe.
the hijab is one of a few headdresses worn by muslim women.
from what i can tell, it is supposed to hide the femininity of the woman.
because i'm sure as a muslim, it's going to all be the woman's fault if a man acts improperly due to attraction.. i don't agree with it, but hey, it's their religion and it doesn't hurt others, so have at it if you want to wear it.. let's face it.
I actually find a hijab quite feminine and attractive in it's appearance. It definitely does not hide a woman like a burka does.
Symbolically, it is meant to show modesty and respect. Muslim women can only show their hair to their family and husband. There is something within a lot of fundamentalist faiths, not just Muslim, about covering the head to symbolically represent respect. I have far more issue with the burka than the hijab.
oh, there is one brother that keeps prattling on about "the 5 pillars of faith and worship".

It's rather suspect and creepy the use of this term as it is associated with Islam.

Some high profile people have left Scientology including Paul Haggis, Leah Remini, and head honcho David Miscavige's niece. She recounts a lot of abuse occurring within this group. They are definitely isolating children from their parents and breaking child labour laws. Also, Miscavige's wife seems to have disappeared.

Well, IF they alter the shunning policy I foresee this going the same way as the no blood policy.
They will alter it in writing, but in practice, it will remain.

My Father used to tell his JW 'friends' it was because I pursued higher education that I wasn't a JW.
It's interesting that he never really asked ME why I wasn't a JW. I think he didn't want to have his faith shaken. But over the years we have had some conversations. I definitely gave him things to think about.
I have many reasons, some of which include theodicy, disagreeing with Watchtower doctrine such as the no blood policy, their misogynistic ideals/practices, shunning, and pedophilia.
Their claim of having exclusive Truth is easily shot down as time passes. Changing doctrine or beliefs = no exclusive Truth.
as someone brought up as a jw and been an elder and been disfellowshipped (twice!!!
) i find it difficult to understand why ex jws have to attack the religion, yes religion, not cult or sect.
i am no longer disfellowshipped just do not want to practice anymore.
