/inline toolbox new york investors showed relief early monday following a report that citigroup inc. is in talks for the u.s. government to boost its stake in the bank.. overseas markets rose on the report, and u.s. stock futures pointed to a higher open.. stocks tumbled last week as investors worried that the government would be forced to funnel more money to citigroup and bank of america corp. and, in the process, completely wipe out shareholders.
the wall street journal reported late sunday that citi is negotiating to increase the u.s. government's stake to as much as 40 percent.

Why is America such an unequal society?
by hamilcarr inwith the latest surge of anti-european comments and threads from us anti-progressives on this board, a little bit american self-criticism may be appropriate.. since the eighties, income inequality has been on the rise in american society.
most economists, however, agree that redistributing wealth is a legitimate role for any modern enlightened government.
and even alan greenspan labelled us income inequality a "disturbing tend" which could lead to societal instability.

Double standards of bellicose anti-spending conservatives
by hamilcarr inhypocrites?.
implicitly, some advocates of continued largesse for the pentagon concede that the case cannot be made fully in terms of our need to be safe from physical attack.
ironically--even hypocritically, since many of those who make the case are in other contexts anti-government spending conservatives--they argue for a kind of weaponized keynesianism that says military spending is important because it provides jobs and boosts the economy.

Almighty Brain
by hamilcarr inobama was scientifically accurate when he declared that one clings to god and gun in times of distress.
this week's newscientist devoted an interesting set of articles on our almighty brain.. while many institutions collapsed during the great depression that began in 1929, one kind did rather well.
during this leanest of times, the strictest, most authoritarian churches saw a surge in attendance.. this anomaly was documented in the early 1970s, but only now is science beginning to tell us why.

Charles Darwin's research to prove evolution was motivated by his desire to end slavery
by hamilcarr incharles darwin's research to prove evolution was motivated by his desire to end slaverycharles darwin, the scientist whose theories have become a corner stone of modern biology, was motivated to carry out his famous research by a desire to rid the world of slavery, according to a new book.
"origin of the species is a classic scientific work as it has no obvious social agenda, although when you read the journal of his voyage on the beagle it becomes clear he was horrified by the slavery he saw and how it weighs upon him.".

davos, switzerland: along with skiing and partying into the night, europe-bashing has long been a favorite sport, whenever the world's business and political elite gather here for their once-a-year winter schmoozefest.. but this year many of the critics have fallen conspicuously silent.
