Beards and dress clothes...

i often wonder about the unwritten rule in kingdom halls that a witness should be in dress clothes and brothers cannot have beards (the beard rule i think is pretty much us-only though).

sure, they won't stop you from coming to a meeting in your work clothes and they might even treat you fine.

but, if you want to go anywhere in the congregation (i.e.

We were asked in our cong whether we would object if a brother who had a beard gave a talk would offend us, I turned the argument on it's head and said that I would be offended if a brother who had beard was not invited, solely because he had a beard. That freaked them

I used to arrange for outside speakers to give talks, and deliberately invited a bother with a beard to give talk (he was good speaker as well). Guess what? I was soon relieved of my post.

I need some advice...my first post!

i've been around for awhile, but never registered for fear of giving my personal information (yes, that's how much the borg scares me.

i was raised in the org, and left when i was 18. i realized that every religion firmly believed that they were correct, and that forced me to re-evaluate the religion on its merits, as opposed to my insistent belief.

needless to say, i saw the man behind the curtain.

I have the same problem with regards to relatives in the wts, many here do. My relatives are my wife and daughter.

Read around here and get lots of thoughtful and kind advice.

Would it be cynical - yet possible -that some company that just be happened to owned by a brother, buy this lot for a very good price? The company may be very 'fortunate' to have some spiritual men ( no women of course) running it. And as Jehovah blesses this arrangement the company does well .

I have already predicted it, I am prescient!!!

a couple of days ago i asked for advice because the elders have got on my case and wanted to come and see me.

my jw son and his wife are the only ones who know my feelings on the borg.

i also told them some home-truths about the wt, so i wasn't sure if they had turned me in or not.

let's assume for the moment that god decides what is good and what is bad.

does he 'a' choose what is good because it is obviously good or 'b' is it good simply because he says so?

if 'a' then what is good is independant of god and he has no choice but to accept it as good.. if 'b' then the definition of what is good is arbitrary - god could decide that child abuse was good and it would be because he said so.. clearly this is ridiculous because we all recognise child abuse to be a bad thing and that is why god would never label it as good.

We could aproach this for another angle which I think y allude to in your opening gambit. Most cultures have siimilar baseline mories, like to kill is wrong. to steal is wrong. ...They then extraoplate this into Jurisprudential framework and form laws.

Most religious beliefs impose a legal framework.

Therefore the law should guide our choices, if we need it.
