Don't you just love the fact that as non-JW's we are free to actually think about this type of issue, inform ourselves, and make a descision based on our true feelings rather than someone else's? :)

Atheists Against Abortion?
by AK - Jeff inhttp://objectivewriting.blogspot.com/2007/09/atheist-stand-against-abortion.html.
thoughts that somewhat parallel mine on this subject.
rational thought and rejection of creationism might not automatically place one in a particular stance on every issue, and may result in somewhat odd positions, compared to the stereotypical ones.

If you had to lose one of your five senses ...
by sacolton inwhich of the five senses could you do without for a lifetime?.

Fading doesn't have to mean hanging out with JW's. You can go to less and less meetings and than sail off into the sunset...
Sounds like you've already been missing meetings and that both you and your husband are on the same page. It may be time to take a bow and exit stage left... :)

If you can't smell you can't taste. So you lose two for one if you lose the sense of smell.
Losing any sense would be devastating, but losing smell and taste is not handicapping so I'd have to chose those.

"My" atheism...
by changeling ina comment on dgp's thread about being kind to jw's promted me to post this thread.. as a life long (46 years) jw, i was conditioned to doing "the right thing" because it was required of me.
i was also conditioned to be on the lookout for others not doing the right thing and either distancing myself from them or reporting them to the elders.. today, i consider myself an atheist.
i have nobody telling me what the right thing is or fear of being punished for not doing it.

A comment on dgp's thread about being kind to JW's promted me to post this thread.
As a life long (46 years) JW, I was conditioned to doing "the right thing" because it was required of me. I was also conditioned to be on the lookout for others not doing the right thing and either distancing myself from them or reporting them to the elders.
Today, I consider myself an atheist. I have nobody telling me what the right thing is or fear of being punished for not doing it. Yet, somehow, I find myself spending a lot of time thinking about just what is this right thing. I have found that I am less demanding and judgemental of others and, at the same time, expect more of myself. Being kind, compassionate and fair have great importance to me now. Looking out for ways to help the people in my life, the community, and the environment are a way of life for me. Nobody expects this of me, I expect it of myself and it gives me a sense of peace and joy.
Here is something I wrote a few months ago, that speaks of my deepest thoughts:
Alone
No one watches my every move.
No one reads my thoughts.
No one monitors my dreams.
No one passes judgment, or keeps tabs.
My actions don’t get recorded; to be used against me or in my favor.
I think, and I breathe and I act: alone.
Alone. Responsible for myself.
Able to choose based on experience or whim.
I don’t have to check to see if my choice is the “right” one.
I can change my mind.
I can learn and alter my course.
I’ve no need of confession.
I’ve no fear of punishment.
I expect no rewards.
I have no thoughts of heaven or paradise.
No fairy tale ending awaits me.
I live, not for an idealized future, but for today.
Today I can make someone happy.
Today I can make choices.
Today I have a voice.
I’m truly and completely alone.
But I’m not lonely.
I don’t fear the dark or its prince.
Fear does not rule me.
I find comfort in my own heart;
And in the very depths of my mind.
Places no one can reach, that are private and safe.
I matter.
I am human.
I am perfect in my uniqueness.
I’ve no unattainable goal to make me feel small.
I am alone.
I am free.

I will not speak for every person, atheist or otherwise, but the way I feel and lead my life is proof that being "godless" does not have to mean being unconcerned with others. :)

Does it make a difference if you are kind to a witness?
by dgp injust a hypothetical question.
suppose you meet someone who happens to be a jehovah's witness.
suppose you get to know how he/she lives, and, though you understand you can't do much for the person, you still show you care.

Oh, and elderlite: I'm an atheist. What does that have to do with showing kindness?

True kindness expects nothing in return.

I'm sure you know this AKJeff, but some may confuse being pro-choice with being pro-abortion (I've argued this on this forum before).
The two are completly different stands.

I'm an atheist. I'm pro-choice because I will not pretend to walk in another woman's shoes and have the right to make descisions for her...but...I would never have nor recommend an abortion.
I am against late term abortion unless the mother's life is on the line.
I am against using abortion as birth control. We have many effective BC methods that are easily avialable: use them.
Abortion should be a measure of last resort, when a woman feels she has no other alternative. I will not stand in judment of another woman and her choice. Only she knows when her situation is too difficult to carry and bear a child.

Interesting experience on SL...JeHOvah's Witness and I have an encounter
by mindmelda ini go to a women's discussion group on sl, second life, which is a virtual community where you do all sorts of things, including entertainment, discussion groups, media, and just socializing through the use of animated avatars which can be quite realistically human or whatever you want them to be, really, aliens, elves, dragons, vampires, etc.. anyway, a woman there brought to the discussion a situation where she had her real life husband wants to divorce her for a witness woman he had met..and get this...she had come to his door after the couple separated and offered him a bible study, and apparently instead, it turned into a romance and then, according to the woman, her husband and this woman are hitting the sheets.
(you're not supposed to call on the opposite sex alone, and do doubt this is one reason...too many lonely witness women who'd jump on the first piece of dude they meet!
lol).
