  Inherit the wind

  has anyone seen the movie inherit the wind?

  i just got done watching the 1999 remake of the original 1960.. it's about two lawyers arguing in court about the guilt or innocence of a school teacher, teaching evolution.. it's about as pertinent today as it was in 1999 or 1960. it's really a good movie.

  Love both movies. The earlier movie seems to me to be one of the attempts to understand group think - shortly after the Holocaust.

  the good news is that, just like the watchtower, their growth is being stunted by the internet.. grab a coffee and be amazed at just how gullible millions of people can be.. lucy harris has become my new heroine.

  Truly an amazing story about the power of delusion, belief, charisma etc. If it didn't adversely impact so many lives Mormonism would be a fascinating sociological experiment.

  Also, less than 200 years after its founding (at a time with relatively high literacy and printing presses) the lines between legend and fact are very blurred. Makes you think about how the Christian religion itself must have layered legend upon legend.

  here we go again... let's study... news report... comment.... who is gog of magog mentioned in the book of ezekiel?.

  for a number of years, our publications have explained that gog of magog is the name given to satan the devil after his ouster from heaven.

  this explanation was based on the fact that the book of revelation identifies satan the devil as the leader of the worldwide attack on gods people.

  Also interesting that they are backing off from the old "universities are dens of immortality and drugs" and saying what they really are scared of "they will change your thinking"

  So sad that if someone knows "The Truth" about everything they have to be careful not to spend too much time with people who think differently.

  Interesting that they haven't published anything on the subject in almost 10 years and aren't publishing anything now.   Just a video that can be pulled or disclaimed.  "We're emphasizing divine education" "decision is up to the parents"

  Because maybe they don't want to be blamed for a child living in poverty after following their rules (I know- I kinda doubt that too....)

  The LOL moment for me-  "now the child believes in evolution...how sad"

  There are legal and tax protections for religious orders and their members.  That's why they use this language.  When you are a Bethelite the accounting office prepares your taxes and includes language about the Order.

  So why not go one step further and admit that the illustration of a "faithful and discreet slave" may NOT refer to a group of 21st century self proclaimed religious leaders living in New York???? It might just be a teaching that had entirely 1st century application??

  i was thinking about how so many posters here on jwn are frustrated and frantic to help their loved ones get away from the brainwashing of jws, and how much advice is given about how to help family members and loved ones.

  i considered my own leaving and that it was internal turmoil based on the teachings getting weirder and child abuse issues, to name just a few, and it made me wonder:.

  did you self-awaken or were you assisted by the gentle proddings of a friend or family member?

  My wife was mentally out but I was an elder and the congregation secretary. 3 things pushed me over the edge: 1- counting up all the publishers time seemed like an excessive waste of time and tracking of something that was not very meaningful. 2- I had trouble seeing myself as the guy going around telling everyone that the world was going to end. There were too many logical questions abut the Armageddon and new system teachings. 3- you guys, open minds.com and COC lifted the vail.

  So yes. I had help.

  I think putting GB talks online will do more to undermine this organization than 100 JWNs could ever do. The rank and file have no idea how out of touch the organizations leadership is.

  Can't wait for some crazy Loesch rant to go viral. ("Wives craving", "women taking too long of strides" - just a few of the Bethel clasics)
