What do we believe Mommy?
by lrkr inmy wife just took a class on hinduism and buhddism (sp??
) and she is telling our son about it.
she tells him about how in tibet they believe that the dalai lama has been born 114 times and that the current dalai lama could identify the personal possessions of the previous one when he was 4 years old- thus "proving" that he was the reborn lama.. my son, bewildered, says- "but do we believe that?".

NYC - Gramercy Park/East Side - area around Beth Israel Medical Center
by Alana inthere is a slight chance that my husband may have the opportunity to go to nyc to complete a surgical residency at beth israel medical center (on 17th st., between 1st & 2nd ave.).
he is a podiatrist who orignally completed a shorter residency back after graduation, but now credentialing has changed and it would benefit him to be able to get into a surgical residency, hopefully as a 2nd yr resident.
and he is working with several programs now in the application process.. my question is for you nyc folks is: in what kind of area is that hospital located?

4th of July- Not just "America's Birthday"
by lrkr inin my new way looking at things without the borg filter i am extremely impressed by the events of july 4, 1776. .
this was the culmination of a movement that changed the way the world viewed government.
government was no longer a grant by god to the king- but a right granted by the people being governed.

NY times magazine today
by lrkr inlight and darkness heavenly forces and a corrupted earth are the twin engines of apocalyptic movements.
for christians awaiting rapture or shiites counting the days until the twelfth imam appears, the trials and injustices of the known world are a prelude for the paradise that we can imagine but cant yet achieve.
judging by the sheer number of predicted end dates that have come and gone without the trumpets blowing and angels rushing in, we are a people impatient to see our world redeemed through catastrophe and we are always wrong.

Must read- New Yorker article on Scientology
by lrkr inthis article caught my eye- and held my attention through a very long plane ride.
the similarities in thought control methods between the witnesses and the scientologists are amazing.
although they are very different doctrinally- the control, guilt, isolationism, and leader-worship are very similar.
