Can't add much more to garybuss's advice. Perhaps, make as many friends as you can and as fewer enemies. Value your family, especially your kids - they grow up too fast.

by serendipity in.
for those of you who are over 50, what advice regarding living a meaningful life would you give to the younger crowd?
do you wish you took a different path earlier in life?

Olympic wrestler and actor who became the last of the men who struck the symbolic J. Arthur Rank movie gong has died aged 80.
While Ken Richmond was faking the striking of the gong on screen, the real noise came from a percussionist called James Blades hitting a tam tam which was a mere two feet in diameter.
At 6ft 2in (1.9 m) and 19 stone (120 kg), Richmond was well-suited to his chosen sport of wrestling. He won a bronze medal in the freestyle heavyweight category in the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki.
Chris Saunders discusses the varied interests of his close friend Kenneth Richmond with Matthew Bannister.
Kenneth Richmond was born on July 10 th 1926. He died on August 3rd 2006. -

Who are these campaigns for?
Seems to me they are for drumming up support from the rank and file rather being a genuine attempt to put a message out to the public.

Another recent read:
A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth
A huge novel of over 1500 pages. Set in India in the early 1950s, it is a bit of an Indian soap opera. It is useful if you have a basic knowledge of Hindi words. There is a liberal scattering of Hindi terms, e.g. nimbu pani (lemon water), but there is no glossary. -

doinmypart - read Time Traveller's wife lasat year. Obviously not a good JW -"if there was an Olympics for oral sex, she would be a champion" - I am sure the quote is quite right but you get the drift.
I have read Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code - what a crap writer - I only wish I could do better myself and make a fortune.

I read Birdsong last year - an excellent novel describing the hell of the trenches in the first world war. Quite sad really.

Always a popular thread – the what are you reading at the moment thread?
My favourite reads for the summer of 2006:
The History of Love by Nicole KraussIn many ways a sad story of a talented Jewish writer left totally alone in the world after the holocaust. A must read.
Gilead by Marilynne RobinsonI just loved this gentle story of a truly good religious man.
The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch AlbomAn interesting read – makes you want to evaluate what is important in your life.
A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian by Marina LewyckaI found it mildly amusing but really not my sort of novel.
The Accidental by Ali SmithA slightly quirky novel but overall quite enjoyable.
Great Expectations by Charles DickensA book I have read many times but still occasionally scan through. So many favourite bits but the account of the impromptu wedding of his friend Wemmick’s wedding is so heart-warming. “Halloa, here’s a church …….. Halloa here’s Miss Skiffins, let’s have a wedding”. -

Could the JW's be in "survival mode"?
by JH ini notice that they don't preach much door to door anymore.
i'm not the only one who notices this around here.. i was just wondering if they reached a point where they can't bring anyone to the org.
anymore, so all that counts for them is to keep going to their meetings and wait for armageddon.

yes - I agree that they could be.
They have no sense of direction at present. That doesn't mean that they are in danger of imminent collapse - there are too many 'old timer' and hard liners for that. But in developed countries nothing new or exciting is happening. -

Our congregation is buzzing..................
by vitty in..................yep thats what my sister said to me today.
apparently after the dc, it was said that there may not be a convention next year and that its obvious the society knows something.
she said the whole congregation are really excited and people are making plans to pioneer this year.

2 + 2 = 5 This is the sort of reasonong that fuels such rumours.
