This is an important topic regarding child abuse needing to be bumped up. The similarities that are in some of these cults are amazing concerning the hiding of child abuse. It's a crime happening in our society way too much which needs to stop and society in general needs to make people more aware of it to help victims. Emptiness of Watchtower

Never having been a jw, I noticed right away that the articles were written like young children's books. I mentioned this to my jw mother-in-law - she said it was because they have so many members from other countries who don't have the English language down. Yeah, right.
If so, it's like using baby talk with kids - how will that help them learn? Well the watchtower certainly doesn't want the people to learn to think beyond that level - keep them brain dead so it's easier to indoctrinate.
I have been in a kingdom hall for 2 weddings and one funeral. At all 3 occasions the talks were horrible - slow, droning, repetitive and obvious propaganda. I could barely stand it but all the jws were nodding their heads.
Now, knowing more about cults and mind control, that is a common method of indoctrination. Like chanting - slow, boring and hypnotic. Keep them half asleep mentally and the written and spoken propaganda sinks in.

ORPHAN CROW- I see your point about " mental illness " but I think it's splitting hairs over terminology. I truly believe in the physical world that there are physical illnesses that one cannot be healed from- what makes us think that there aren't MENTAL illnesses that one cannot be healed from ? The word " illness " doesn't imply that an " illness is totally curable- or treatable-" as MANY physical illnesses on this planet are NOT treatable. Why would some forms of mental illness be any different ?
Your comment " psychopaths are not sick- their condition is normal to them " . Yeah, the governing body think they sit on the right hand of Christ too- and it may seem "normal " to them - but to most sane people on the planet - they are considered nut jobs. I feel that yes the Virginia shooter ( had he not committed suicide ) should have been held accountable for his actions as well as Ted Bundy was. YES they knew what they were doing in a violent manner- but they were OFF, SICK, or DEMENTED in their heads- opposite of a normal, sane, functioning human being . No matter WHO commits a crime I believe there should be some form of accountability whether the person is " mentally ill ", " twisted ", " sociopathic ", or " psychopathic " - there needs to be accountability. If a person is " mentally ill " and can't control or know what they did- then that is why there are psychiatric institutions run by some prisons to keep them in in certain states.
People who commit murder or violent crimes can be totally mentally insane- yet appear normal and deceive the general public- and THAT is the point I was attempting to make in my post on page 19

SIMON- There are lots of sociopathic people on the planet who seem to be charming , actually ABLE to fully function as normal " appearing " humans - thus deceiving others for awhile - yet they are mentally dysfunctional- unable to feel normal human emotions due to possibly chemical imbalances in their brains. When I talk about " mental illness " this is the type of person I'm referring to- Ted Bundy types who manipulate other humans for their own secret twisted purposes - yet many don't find out about them until they've blown their gasket like Mount Vesuvius and killed people- then it's too late.
Claiming that someone has mental illness doesn't excuse them for what they do- they are STILL responsible for their actions- it's NOT making excuses- it's the reality of mental illness in our society that sociopaths and psychopaths ARE on the loose and may strike at any time, anywhere. On the other hand- there's a good argument for taking the view that anybody who is racist and prejudiced is mentally ill in the first place. Living with racially prejudiced views is a mentally unstable way of living life and looking at life and people anyway- no matter what ethnic background someone has. There's good and bad in all races. Wow, a thread that's REALLY blown up.
One of the most intelligent posts I've read so far is from page 11:
NONJWSPOUSE: " Also, the people that are so dangerous are the ones that make their view of reality one that justifies such mass killings. Religion, whether found in actual doctrine , or in warped minds of those who read doctrine in some justifiable lethal way, many times has a part in that. " AMEN- PRAISE JESUS. I agree.
Whether it's the David Koresh's, Jim Jones of the world that take many people down with them in their insanity- or whether it's the secretive Mark David Chapman's of the world who killed John Lennon or this secretive Virginia shooter- the one common thread in ALL of these killers is that they have an agenda, a grievance in which they try to FORCE their perception of " reality " onto other people they hold a grudge towards - then blow these people the hell away killing them because these people won't AGREE with their warped sense of their skewed version of " reality " . And therein lies the problem.
How in the hell do we deal with thousands of these crazies running around either in a clandestine fashion or on the Internet in public trying to promote their twisted views of "reality " onto the rest of us ? In my opinion - about the only thing we can do is protect ourselves, our friends, and those we love by keeping our eyes open constantly being aware of our surroundings and not falling into complacency by being TOO trusting of strangers who may have hidden agenda's towards others - so that we don't get caught in the crossfire of some twisted nut jobs who want to go down in a " blaze of glory " forcing their views on others in a violent way. And even then- there is no guarantee we can avoid these crazies totally. They show up in random fashion many times.
So hug your children today people. Hug your wife, hug your husband , hug each other - we need to look out for one another in a modern society that's become so impersonal and so many people feeling like they don't matter and disenfranchised. All I have to say

briefly, my family suffered my older/deceased brother's molestation when he was 13, in the congregation.
to this day, my mother still defends the elders that dealt with this situation.
