let me begin by saying that i never expected to even talk about my situation let alone discuss it on the internet but i guess im just feeling so sad that i must hope that someone will understand and give me encouragement...so here it goes.. .

First off, WELCOME to our group of very diversified ex-jws (and others).

You sound like a young lady that overcomes obstacles, even though you have to do it through hardship and heartache.

You have good news in this story (congrats on the wedding!) and bad news (shunning from your family). Sounds like you've dealt with their shunning and abuse before, so you can deal with it again. Focus on the good, dear, and let the cultists have their cult. Any children you may have may actually be better off, imo, not being exposed to their nonsense and lack of real love...... Journey-on!

I'm just curious- is the title you mentioned "How to read a book" co-written by the same Charles Van Doren made famous by the movie 'Quiz Show" ?

I don't imagine it's the same person. The preface states he is associated with the Institute for Philosophical Research and has worked with Adler on the twenty-volume Annals of America, published by Encyclopedia Britannica, Inc. in 1969, as well as conducting discussion groups on great books and moderating executive seminars throughout the country.

Maybe someone else on this board knows for sure.

Why do pioneers always think they're something so-o-o special? It's just an excuse sometimes, imo, to avoid getting a real job and still appear you're doing something productive. I, for one, was NEVER impressed by a pioneer. I've always thought they tended to expect special treatment and most of them seemed like deadbeats to me.

hello all, yes i am still in, but man it's getting so hard to continue to give up my life , for something that's just not happening, my wife is pioneering, and i just cant contiue to do this.

cost of living,gas, we sold our home 4 yrs agao.

I think maybe, too, that they get a bit discouraged on this forum. They may not be ready nor inclined to throw God out the window along with their religion, and JWD (imo) is extremely atheistic. Those that believe in a higher being and believe his spirit or essence is involved in man's physical and spiritual evolution have a tough time hanging on this forum.

I think it's necessary for us all to discuss and debate and comfort and support each other because of our common background. But, you have to have a bit of a tough skin to keep it up, because the atheists and agnostics can overwhelm some folks. Sometimes, they jump in and rip believers apart and if you're not confident or verbal enough to stand up for yourself and discuss and debate the issues, you can get scared off.

There are so many beliefs along the continuum from rabid atheists to syrupy holier-than-thou Bible thumpers, that you just have to be willing to examine them all, absorb, assimilate, or accommodate what you choose to but then learn to separate the person from the dogma. Don't let it color your caring and concern for the person.

in ancient times god was very anthropomorphic.

he walked in the garden "in the breezy part of the day".. he talked to man.. he was suprised by events.

he asked questions as though he needed information.. he was emotional and spontaneous.

This is why people won't...can't...shouldn't...throw out the baby with the bath. There are real and truly life-changing experiences that cause those that have them to absolutely without a doubt KNOW an intelligent creator exists and moves through man's evolution, not only the physical evolution, but the spiritual one as well.

Those who can't grasp this, don't get it and probably never will. They will just continue to put forth the idea that those who believe in this Divine Intelligence are somehow intellectually inferior, when I think it may be just the other way around. But, because they don't "get it" and can't envision it with their limited senses, they stupidly think they are the ones intellectually superior. It's quite laughable really and a bit pathetic to see otherwise intelligent people discard what is obviously real in the lives of others.
