Attack near St Catherine's Monastery
by Earnest infollowing on from the bombings of coptic churches in egypt, there was an attack earlier this month on a checkpoint near st catherine's monastery.
this monastery dates back to the time of justinian and has a number of early bible mss including part of codex sinaiticus of the fourth century.. i am surprised this hasn't happened before because isis is active in northern sinai and it would be a major event were they to gain access and wreak havoc at st catherine's monastery.
although the isolation of the monastery has contributed to its survival over 1400 years, it is in the forefront of digitising its manuscript collection.

Codex Sinaiticus
by Earnest inthis is just a little bit of trivia for those who are interested.
yesterday i visited the british library and revisited the area where they have the biblical manuscripts (and many others).
they have both the codex sinaiticus and alexandrinus which for a long time were the oldest manuscripts available and are still the oldest (almost) complete mss of the bible.

Professor Donald Wiseman RIP
by Earnest inearlier this month (2nd february) donald wiseman died at the age of 91. he was involved in excavations in iraq, turkey and israel and produced major studies of cuneiform texts as well as works on the history of assyria and babylonia.
he also wrote several commentaries on the old testament and was involved in the translation of the niv.. the watchtower society has apparently held him in high esteem and his studies of the cuneiform texts and knowledge of the history of assyria and babylonia have been referred to, especially in discussion of the chronological calculations.
while he did not seem to engage in end-time speculation he did recommend the publication 'the gentile times reconsidered' by carl jonsson.. in many respects he is part of a past age - a scholar, a christian and a gentleman - and we are the poorer for his passing..

The Third Reich and JW
by Earnest ini have recently purchased a small book entitled "the third reich and the christian churches" which is "a documentary account of christian resistance and complicity during the nazi era".
interesting reading.. one extract is taken from the book "kirchenkampf in deutschland 1933-1945" (friedrich zipfel, berlin, 1965, pp.527-533) which records the trial of fourteen jws before the berlin supreme court in november 1944:.
the writing, 'look the facts in the face' [probably 'face the facts', printed in 1938], has the impertinence to launch vicious attacks on the leadership of the national socialist state.

Jesus is watching you
by Earnest ina burglar broke into a home and was snooping around when he heard a voice whisper, "jesus is watching you.".
he paid no attention to the noise, assuming it was his mind playing tricks on him.
however, after another minute or so he heard the refrain again: "jesus is watching you.".

Are miracles by faith or psychosomosis?
by Earnest inpsychosomosis?
no, it's not in my dictionary either.
but 'psychosomatic' relates to disorders caused or aggravated by psychological factors and so i use the term to refer to healing caused or expedited by psychological factors.

Another bloody risk
by Earnest inthe london times of 6th march 2002 reported :lung fear may lead to curb over mothers giving blood.
the national blood service said yesterday that it was actively considering restrictions of blood donated by women who have been pregnant because it can trigger a fatal lung condition in the recipient.. four people are known to have died in britain in the past four years because they have received blood from donors who are mothers.
the same factor is thought to have caused another ten deaths.. women who have been pregnant produce antibodies to protect themselves from the foreign cells of the foetus, and the levels rise with each pregnancy.
