Through a Darkened Pane
by compound complex inmy frequent walks these last few years about the neighborhood so familiar to me would ordinarily be construed a pleasant enough non-event.
a little mild exercise - taken in small doses to keep the joints operating properly - and a keen eye peeled for the ever-changing face of nature have rendered the daily promenade a suitable diversion.
until recently.

What is the best thing you did to recover after leaving the JWs?
by Lady Lee ini often get inspiration for threads from pms from other posters.
here is one that i thought i would put out there to get your recommendations?.
what is the best thing you did?.

That's a very good question, Lady Lee, and one that I had to think about. I'm not really sure there was anything in particular during the first years I was out... they were very painful and I had a difficult time moving forward.
Honestly... I think the best thing I did was research and investigate after accidentally running across this site. I was looking for something completely unrelated, and a JWD thread about the subject popped up in my search! It was then I saw threads about the UN involvement, and I refused to believe it, even though I had been inactive for many years! I stayed up all night researching, finding the newspaper articles, and finally ended up on the official United Nations website (which, as you know, confirms the Watchtower involvement.)
This site was literally the key that unlocked my naive apologist shackles.

Black and White Thinking: the ENEMY of Intelligent Thought
by Terry insomething is true if it matches reality.. a true statement cannot contradict reality.. but, the mind can interpret anything into its opposite.
all it takes is black and white thinking and a belief things should be otherwise.. if jeffrey dahmer's mother thought he was a good son, then, he could not possibly be the guy who is eating people.. if o.j.simpson was a fine, upstanding fella with a great personality, then, he couldn't possibly have brutally murdered two people with a large serrated knife.
a ton of proof means nothing when belief is everything.. black and white thinking won't permit any facts to slip by the core belief and become refuted.. are you guilty of black and white thinking?.

Chalam
by yadda yadda 2 indo you ever post without quoting the bible?
why do you feel a compulsive need to quote scriptures in all your posts?
were you once a bible-thumping jw or are you just a born-again bible thumper who never was a jw and just happens to dislike jws?.
-
BabaYaga
I'm just jumpin' on the "Love Chalam" train. Keep it up... do what you need to do to express yourself and your thoughts.
Baba loves ya.
editor's note: For what it's worth, I do not believe the Bible is anywhere NEAR the infallible word of (G)od. But I do find Chalam's posts full of love and wisdom, no matter what book he quotes.

Jehovah's Witnesses - Trained to Argue
by AllTimeJeff inalthough a cult, jehovah's witnesses should not be underestimated as to their smarts.
sometimes, exiting jw's, due to indoctrination, feel a lot of guilt for leaving.
of course, the governing body wouldn't have it any other way.. upon leaving, many for the first time feel a freedom to express themselves, which is as it should be.

My parents used to tell I should have been a lawyer, I could argue anything. Looking back, I think it was the JW training that made me that way.
I agree, Jimmy. I was told I could rationalize anything and that I never apologized. I think THAT came from our "ministry" training, also! (By the way, hopefully I have overcome at least the apology part.)

nightmares after leaving
by myownlife inhello everyone, i have been reading the different topics and haven't seen this discussed..... i was raised in the 'truth' and decided when i was 19 this was not for me...but unfortunately it took years after that to finally make the clean break.
during that time and up until about a year ago, i was having strange and disturbing nightmares..it finally came to a head when i dreamed that i cussed out the elders in the congregation i had left.,..woke up in a sweat but felt great!
has anyone else experienced this?
-
BabaYaga
Oh boy did I ever have nightmares. I would wake up yelling with my heart racing...
I'm glad those days are over.
(Like I've said before... it really DOES just keep getting better!)
Welcome to the board, MyOwnLife!

The Barbara Anderson Appreciation Thread
by Quillsky inthere are many newcomers who may see references on this website to barbara anderson but not understand the complete awesomeness of what she has done, and continues to do, in the pursuit of truth.. for those who don't know, a brief summary: barbara and her husband joe spent most of their lifetime being uber-witnesses, bringing 80 or so people into the organization and ending up at brooklyn bethel.
barbara landed up in the sacred heart of bethel, the writing department, and wrote awake!
articles.

In one of their threads I kind of went off on them because they said that "1000's have died" do to the Wt no-blood policy, saying that unless they had proof that a comment like that was not appropriate.
I was wrong.I remember that thread, PSacramento. You have warmed my heart tonight. Thank you.
