Young children often believe that their parents can read their minds. I think some people extend that belief into adulthood, except that their god takes the place of their parents. I don't know if this has anything to do with intelligence.

When I was a young lad going to the hall with my parents, I daydreamed a lot. When I got bored with that, I sometimes opened up the Bible and started reading. I would get quite engrossed in some of the stories like the Exodus or King David's exploits. Of the NT books, I found the Gospel according to John to be interesting and seemingly more refined that the other gospels. I have read the Bible cover to cover, but there are parts that are a chore to get through. I have a JPS Tanakh (Jewish Bible) that I keep intending to read. I like the rendering it gives better than the NWT. As far as New Testament Bible translations are concerned, I'm not sure which one would be superior in readability to the NWT.

Oops! My math was off! Yes, that's what happens when you make a post very early in the morning! lol!
Still, though, that leaves the question: 5000 heads of household or 5000 individuals including children and senior citizens? I can't imagine a family of four spending $1600 on a weekend at the District Assembly. This ain't Vegas!

Maybe I missed something. 5,000+ convention attenders spent over $2,000,000 in one weekend? That's about $4,000 per person, right? Now just how is that possible?

Selection of the JWs in 1918/1919 - how might a JW attempt to show from the Bible
by insearchoftruth ini had asked my wife, who is in the study phase with a jw sister about the selection of the jws by jc in 1918/1919 time frame and she had actually never heard of that.. the husband of this woman she is studying with has been chomping at the bit to talk to me...well my wife said she will ask him to come show me, using only the bible, how this selection was made...of course she did not clear this request with the dubman before telling me she would do this.. i am guessing he will be there when i get home from work tomorrow, she is also torturing our son with a bs now (her son from a previous marriage).. what sort of reach do you think he will try to make to show this...i am guessing he will try to show 1914 from the daniel/revelation stuff, if he does this i am going to ask him to show 607bce from a non jw source....since i believe it is 586/587 bce as a starting date......i hope to keep him on the 1918/1919 topic, and have some examples of their beliefs from that era to talk about as well.

It's too bad most JWs don't have any idea about the strange teachings of the Watchtower back then (1918). If you were to take that old literature and point out the problems and discrepancies contained within it, they would likely react like you had just shown them apostate material. Yet, this same literature was printed by the very same people who were supposedly selected by Jesus!
Since no dates as we know them are to be found in the Bible, the only reliable and universally agreed upon date between JWs and the secular world is the conquest of Babylon in 539 BCE. Then you have to use the Watchtower CD to list the Babylonian kings and the duration of their reigns to show that it was not possible for Nebuchadnezzar to destroy Jerusalem in 607 BCE. The so-called Gentile times prophecy based on Nebuchadnezzar's dream is a pretty flimsy construct. Very few Witnesses are able to explain it even.

I can give you a clue, but I won't go in depth. That would take a book! One thing's for sure, Moses did not write the first five books of the Bible. There is a lot of information right there in the text of the Bible itself, but unless you are a scholar, you will go right over it without a second thought. For example, why do some stories get told two or three times with minor variations? Why is it that God reveals His name (Yahweh/Jehovah) at the burning bush when the writer(s) have been calling Him Yahweh/Jehovah all along? The book Who Wrote the Bible? has all the answers that the Watchtower doesn't want you to know.

If you haven't done so, I recommend getting a copy of Richard Friedman's Who Wrote the Bible? It will really help you make sense of the way the OT was written.

HOWARD ZINN - (historian, anti-war activist) anyone familiar???
by AWAKE&WATCHING in"patriotism is defined as obedience to government, obscuring the difference between the government and the people.
thus, soldiers are led to believe that "we are fighting for our country" when in fact they are fighting for the government - an artificial entity different from the people of the country - and indeed are following policies dangerous to its own people.

I've read A People's History of the United States. I think High School students should read it in addition to their standard US History texts.
