  Scariest Movie you have ever seen?

  i know as exjws, probably for the most, there was a secret freedom in watching horror films without thinking you would have a demon as a bed buddy.. i am not very fond of every horror movie, but i will watch those that have an intelligent side to it and is not gore for the sake of gore.

  like "the ring" got me going when i first watched it, just like "the blair witch project" did, which is more about suspense.

  anyway, i never saw any of the saw movies, so i am going to try to watch saw iii tonight, since it is on showtime.

  Session 9. Yes, I like that movie too. It wasn't scary to me, but I enjoyed the story.

  The last time I was really scared by anything, it was the video game Silent Hill 2. It has some of the best music and sound effects, imo. It isn't about gore or shooting enemies so much as the otherworldly atmosphere of the town and its decrepit buildings and streets. And it actually has a good story! I've played it through many times, but it doesn't affect me like it did that first time. None of the sequels ever quite matched it either.

  However, I agree with Terry's comment above. I no longer believe in the supernatural, so I just don't find horror movies and games scary like I used to.

  Comparing molested children to prostitutes.

  here is an excerpt from the "beware the voice of strangers" talk from the 2003 district convention.

  this part is obviously referring to the "dateline" special.

  notice how they subtly compare the victims with prostitution and insinuate that they are immoral?

  I totally agree with your assessment on this. By their twisted logic, victims of abuse and anyone else who disagrees with their teachings are lumped together with immoral people. Any information that could damage the public image of the WTS is compared with pornography and violent entertainment. I wonder how the bastards that write this stuff can sleep at night.

  inspired by another thread.. i was baptized at 12 years old.

  i had a cousin, two years older than me, who was prettier, more outgoing and more popular in the hall than i was.

  i couldn't beat her at any of that stuff, but i figured i could be a better jw than she was.

  I was 14. My parents hinted at me that it was about time to get baptized, so I went along with it. I felt extremely guilty because I couldn't quit masturbating. I was too embarrassed to talk about it with anyone. I just kept it inside.

  on the subject of health matters i was mentaly listing all the comman illnesses that the dubs lay claim to, most of the time this is self diagnosed and with no imput from a dr. in fact the comman story is that "the drs won't belive me!".

  a large number of jw's i knew went and got tested for allergies, this was the big thing for years.

  every single one of them turned out to be allgeric to the same stuff ( wheat, dairy, sugar) ... i should point out that they all went to the one "dr" for this, the "dr" in question had never had any medical training and had done only a basic course.

  I think it is ironic how certain things are "against their religion" presumeably because "Jehovah knows what is best for us." One would think that with such divine rules principles about things that are healthy and unhealthy, JWs would be the healthiest people on the planet. Yet, obesity, diabetes, depression, heart disease, strokes, and other chronic illnesses afflict Witnesses at least as much as the population in general.

  What is the difference between getting lung cancer from a lifetime of smoking cigarettes and getting colon cancer from a lifetime of bad diet choices? What's the point in disfellowshipping someone for smoking cigarettes when so many at the hall are overweight? Of course, JWs are also no different from the population in general when it comes to following fad diets.

  There is just no evidence of divine direction in this religion. Where is their so-called "spiritual paradise"?

  but jewish law, just like secular legal theory, is filled with judicial loopholes.

  a major one is that for the sake of saving a life, a jew is allowed to break just about any commandment.

  for example, if a jew is injured on the sabbath, he is certainly allowed to go to the hospital even though he normally doesn't drive on saturday.

  Excellent move, Jaguarbass. I think you will enjoy reading it. Friedman's book is by no means the final word on this subject. However, his introduction to the search for Biblical authors is easily understood and gives the lay person (like you and me) an idea of what the fuss is all about. I loaned out my copy to a friend I haven't seen in a while, so I may have to order another one myself.

  can anyone help a techno challenged person put youtubes on my ipod?

  this computer has windows xp if that matters.

  If you use FireFox web browser, then look for a free plugin called Download Helper. I use it to convert videos for my Playstation portable, and I'm almost certain it has iPod video conversion capabilities as well.

  That is a good article in the Wikipedia, Narkissos. I think very few Witnesses are familiar with that information. I would suggest that even if better evidence later suggests that JEPD is incorrect, a good knowledge of the basic DH framework is indispensible to any discussion of the origins of the Torah and the rest of the Bible. Nevertheless, as you previously pointed out, even the latest theories presented by scholars who reject the JEPD framework do not mark a return to the tradition that Moses authored the Pentateuch. For those who have been taught by Fundamentalist religions that Moses authored the Pentateuch, the very fact that the DH can plausibly refute this teaching based on mere internal analysis is eye opening and liberating indeed. For this reason I don't expect to see an in depth consideration of the DH in publications of the WTS.
