he was unlucky enough to have as his support system the local congregation of jehovah's witnesses.
one of the symptoms of his illness was the use of tobacco.
Sad story. Poor guy.
There is another side to the "wonderful" scenes of friends hugging each other and people apparently experiencing ecstatic happiness often depicted in JW dot Org videos - for many , the assemblies are the most depressing times of the year , especially for those not in the in-crowd & cliques . For a few years I gave a lift to a middle aged single sister in our congregation and she often expressed how sad she found the whole event. Goodness knows how bad it is for a DFd JW.

Welcome. Sadly - most of the posters from a decade ago have left. Either health reasons or just had enough of JW stuff and have moved on.

Your forensic examinations of Watchtower study articles really helped me as I was leaving. I think we all understand that after many years being an ex-JW , people usually want to move on eventually.

i am addressing here those who, like me, spent decades in the organisation that we called “the truth”.
perhaps like me you were brought up in it from an early age.
looking back now i wonder that i could have been so heartless as to believe that the mass slaughter of billions of people was “good news”.
This was one teaching I never really could rationalise - luckily I hardly ever remember any householder mentioning it when I was on the ministry as I would have really struggled to justify it.
The teaching that all non-JWs will be annihilated at Armageddon together with not very active JWs who don't quite make the cut ( the so-called "Kevinly class") is still the Societies teaching , but there is no doubt that the rhetoric from the past is very much toned down.
No longer do we see pictures of babies being thrown into chasms in the earth or husbands and wives desperately hugging each other awaiting their imminent violent deaths as Jesus and the angels go around killing people. The "wicked" being destroyed , if depicted at all , tend to be obvious baddies with knives or guns and beards and jeans!

people claimed that it "reinforced racial stereotypes.".
Are they deleting the actual character? Or is the actor who voices them no longer going to do the voice ( presumably to be replaced by someone of the same ethnicity )?
Either way - it is getting really silly now. I have a friend who is a policeman in London and him & his colleagues are really afraid now of arresting anyone who is black. They were called out this week to a group of black youths "tagging" a train ( ie vandalising it ) but just decided not to bother and left them alone to get on with it. It is becoming a nightmare.

whether this view will continue is anyones guess.

i would like to ask the ex-jws on this site to put their ‘apologists hat’ back on for a moment, so that i can go through the overlapping generation teaching in an attempt to make sense of it.
i apologise if these points have already been addressed on this site.a quick background for the reason for my request… having never confronted a jw apologist on the topic, i recently engaged with a jw regarding the official understanding of a ‘generation’ and unfortunately he didn’t have an answer to the points i was making.
i was left a little confused as to what the official jw response would/should be.so i was hoping that my thoughts below might be considered from an apologist’s perspective.the point in question relates to this section of the watchtower article below from 2008, as well as the jw.org video explanation of the overlapping generation:---:w08 2/15[box on page 25] can we calculate the length of “this generation”?the word “generation” usually refers to people of various ages whose lives overlap during a particular time period or event.

But to be honest - why bother trying to convince an active JW? It's a pointless exercise. I remember trying to discuss this a few years ago with an uncle who is a JW elder & he still believed the generation were the wicked ones - he hadn't realised it had evolved several times since then. He still wasn't bothered. You either believe in this crap or you don't.
