just because the watchtower society is wrong doesn't mean that there is no god, nor does it mean there is a god.
it would interesting to now how former members have adjusted thier cosmology, or whether they are now atheists and why.
i personally see religion as a more personal matter, rather than belonging to an organization.

Well, it certainly didn't help. It has made me highly skeptical and untrusting which is not a great springboard for faith.
Sylvia, BTW, that film was made by Leonard and Marjorie Chretien, the couple in the final frames walking along the beach. I met them when the film was in the planning stages a couple of years before it was released. They have done a great service and helped many to come out of this evil organization.

Soon we would be going door to door and telling people they can no longer be saved, and that they are doomed.

this topic sufaces here every now and again, with people reporting on the way that in some locations, the brothers tape paper over the mirrors in the ladies toliets, in order to speed things up and reduce queues.

In most facilities, women using the mirrors and women using the toilets are two different things in terms of a queue. Women using mirrors do not usually impede the free-flow (no pun intended) of women waiting to use the toilets, though there might be a delay in getting to sinks, presuming everyone washes their hands afterwards and the mirrors are over the sinks. (Though I am often surprised how many women do not wash their hands after.) But this still would not impede the use of the toilets.

i had a door-to-door visit from two jws yesterday morning.
the first in a long time (with the exception of the obligatory memorial invite).
i live in a fairly small town, but these two, i did not recognize.
In twelve years, I have had maybe three JW visits at my door, and none in the past 5 years.

Not attending a funeral means the person went out and partied instead? Do you really think that?That was in reference to MegaDude's comment. And, actually, there is no reason one couldn't do both. Final comment: I know all we ex-JW's have had enough "shoulds" to last a lifetime. But sparkplug used the word, and is apparently feeling conflicted about her decision. My response acknowledged and respected what she is feeling.

not attending because emotionally or mentally the thought of doing so is too much to handle. This does not make someone immature and selfish.
You're right. They could also be behaving either immaturely or selfishly, not necessarily both. "Too much to handle?" We do mature and/or unselfish things all the time because it is the right thing to do, even though it could feel like "too much to handle." Visiting a sick friend, going to a job we hate, flying, getting on the freeway, paying the bills, doing our taxes, saying "I'm sorry," listening to someone who is hurting - getting out of our comfort zone to be there for someone else. Or you could just go "party" because that is easier. And it can always be rationalized - "it was too much to handle - you see I am too delicate and sensitive to handle other people's tears of grief - it upsets me."
BTW, please note that I am labeling the behavior not the person. It is an important distinction. I'm sure that those who have expressed solidarity with sparkplug's decision are not "selfish and immature" people. I try not to label people because we all behave differently in different situations.
2 sheets of paper towel for hand drying, controlled use of toilet paper, don't dawdle while in the stall, covered mirrors, what next?.
how about maximum of 2 trips to the bathroom per day otherwise you are written up by brother bathroom monitor.
if more than that you are put on cleaning duty after the day's sessions are done.. .

I disagree with you. What a cold and unfeeling statement to make.
I think it is just the opposite. How is giving of yourself to comfort another person cold and unfeeling? But we'd have to define terms. If it is a funeral that they "should attend," then I assume that there are relationships with those grieving that "should" be supported. But only sparkplug could tell us if that is why she used that description.

Most people who attend funerals do so for two reasons:
1. They truly are grieving the person who has died, and wouldn't feel right being anywhere else. They are compelled to be with others who are grieving the loss of the same person. The funeral is the occasion to do that.
2. They want to show support to those who are grieving the loss of a husband, wife, father, mother, sister, brother or child. They know that their very presence is a comfort to the grieving family.
People who don't attend a funeral "that they should" because they find it "too uncomfortable" to be around sadness and death are behaving selfishly and immaturely.
